An investigation into the effect of protective devices on the dose to radiosensitive organs in the head and neck.

A series of experiments were performed to determine the dose reduction afforded to radiosensitive organs in the head and neck by various protective devices. These included spectacles with plastic, standard glass, photochromic and lead-glass lenses, a thyroid collar and a lead-acrylic face mask. The measurements were performed using an anthropomorphic phantom loaded with lithium fluoride thermoluminescent dosemeters, in conditions realistic of clinical practice. Irradiations were performed using scattered radiation produced by a pelvic phantom, for X-ray beams generated at 80 kVp and 110 KVp. I

Assessment of factors that affect the quality of performance and interpretation of sonography of adnexal masses.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess factors that affect the quality of performance and interpretation of sonography of adnexal masses. METHODS: Two gynecologic sonographers performed blinded reviews of up to 3 sonograms within 5 years before surgery in 325 consecutive women who underwent oophorectomy (610 sonograms). Three 5-point quality scores were assigned (with 5 being the best score) on the basis of the technical quality of the images, accurate description of findings, and summary impression in the report. The location of the examination (on-site, remote, or emergency depa

Pituitary adenoma associated with xanthogranuloma.

Xanthogranuloma (XG) of the sellar region is a non-neoplastic inflammatory lesion characterized histologically by recent and remote hemorrhage, necrotic debris, fibrosis, chronic inflammation, and cholesterol clefts with associated foreign-body giant cells. The inflammatory lesion was recognized by the World Health Organization in 2000. XG of the sellar region is rare. Cases of pituitary adenoma (PA) with an associated XG (PA/XG) are extremely rare, with a total of 16 cases in the literature. PA/XG lacks specific clinical and radiologic signs, making pre-operative diagnosis challenging. Herein

[Radiographic findings in Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and its complications in HIV patients].

We have performed a retrospective study of 61 cases of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) among the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) seropositive population at the 11th Health Area of the Comunidad de Madrid with microbiological diagnosis until January 1994. We made an Epidemiologic analysis of this PCP group and compared it with the Epidemiologic data of the general HIV population in Madrid. Besides, we studied the radiologic manifestations and their possible associations with several factors (sex, HIV risk factor, time of HIV risk practice, time of HIV infection, associated infections, n

Clinical, Pathologic, and Radiologic Features of Orbital Solitary Fibrous Tumors and Meningiomas.

A wide variety of benign and malignant tumors can arise from different structures in the orbital and peri-orbital area, affecting the eye and the optic nerve. This spectrum of tumors includes primary and metastatic carcinomas, lymphomas, melanomas, soft tissue tumors, and primary tumors of the retina, optic disc, and optic nerve. These also extend to relatively rare entities such as solitary fibrous tumor and meningioma of the orbit and optic nerve, which can present with very similar clinical and radiologic features, although the tumor grades, treatment plans, and outcomes can vary widely. Peripheral T-cell lymphoma: spectrum of imaging findings with clinical and pathologic features.

Most radiologists are unfamiliar with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) because PTCL represents a relatively small proportion of lymphomas and has a lower prevalence in Western countries. The World Health Organization classification of lymphoid neoplasms announced in 1999 resolved criticisms about lymphoma classification and aroused new interest in PTCL. The specific clinicopathologic entities of PTCL have particular primary locations and particular clinical and pathologic features. Radiologic images of patients with pathologically proved PTCL were retrospectively reviewed; clinical and pathol

Inappropriate and cloned clinical histories on radiology request forms for sick children.

BACKGROUND: An appropriate clinical history improves the perception and interpretation of radiographic examinations in children and adults. However, clinical history provided on radiology request has not been studied for its appropriateness and frequency of cloned clinical history. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of inappropriate histories and cloned histories at a tertiary-care children's hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed radiology request forms of 388 outpatient and inpatient radiographic examinations obtained on 3 days during the same month a

Idealism and realism in patient care during radiotherapy treatment.

Previous research has demonstrated that typification of patients by health workers is inevitable even when these workers aspire to a concept of treating each patient as an individual. This study aimed to establish how six therapy radiographers, working in three different settings, typified their cancer patients and how this related to their concept of role and the environment in which they worked. The techniques used were ethnographic, non-directive interview techniques and naturalistic observation. There are interesting variations and similarities in how the individuals perceived their workin

Quality control system for patient positioning and filling in meta-information for chest X-ray examinations.

PURPOSE: During radiography, irregularities occur, leading to decrease in the diagnostic value of the images obtained. The purpose of this work was to develop a system for automated quality assurance of patient positioning in chest radiographs, with detection of suboptimal contrast, brightness, and metadata errors. METHODS: The quality assurance system was trained and tested using more than 69,000 X-rays of the chest and other anatomical areas from the Unified Radiological Information Service (URIS) and several open datasets. Our dataset included studies regardless of a patient's gender and r

Importance of personal dose equivalent evaluation in Fukushima in overcoming social panic.

The relationship between the reported ambient dose equivalent (H*(10)) and the individual dose rate recorded by medical staff in Fukushima City after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was evaluated, following a 9.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the east coast of Japan. Personal dose equivalent (H(p)(10)) ranged from 0.08 to 1.63 µSv h(-1) and H*(10) ranged from 0.86 to 12.34 µSv h(-1). H(p)(10) from March to July 2011 were significantly lower than H*(10). The relationships between these dose equivalents were moderately correlated. The regression equation was calculat
