Gamma radiation cured polyester resin for restoration of cultural heritage wood.

In the process of restoring and conserving cultural heritage artifacts and documents, a wide range of coatings based on resins and adhesives … ther methods. Gamma radiation has been effectively used to treat cultural heritage objects, such as rare books, sacred or museum images, and canvas paintings. It is used for insect control, disinfection of harmful microorganisms, such as fungi and bacteria, and for creating new materials for restoration. For this study, formulations of polyester resin, methy …

An Updated Review on Radiation Treatment Management in Thymus Cancers.

This narrative review aims to summarize the currently available evidence for the role of radiation in the treatment of thymus cancers. Thymus cancers are rare, heterogeneous tumors with limited evidence to guide their clinical management. There remains some controversy over the role of radiation in the adjuvant and induction/definitive setting. We performed a systematic search of the MEDLINE/PubMed database, focusing on studies published within the last 30 years. Our search queried "thymoma [OR] thymic carcinoma [AND] radiation" and was limited only to prospective and retrospective studies and

How to bridge the gap? European medical plants used for treating oral mucositis: on the search for evidence.

PURPOSE: Oral mucositis is a common, painful side effect of cancer treatment-be it locoregional (e.g. irradiation) or systemic (e. g. chemotherapy). Phytotherapy is often used by patients to alleviate symptoms. However, knowledge on which medical plants are recommended by literature about Traditional European Medicine (TEM), their effect(s) on symptoms and their efficacy is severely lacking. Therefore, we developed a novel approach to assess traditional knowledge of herbals used in TEM and searched the online databases for studies reporting effects of these plants. METHODS: At first, online r

An epidemiologic study of neural tube defects: Delta County, Michigan, 1969-1988.

We determined the incidence of neural tube defects (anencephaly, spina bifida, hydrocephalus) in a rural county in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan because several local physicians perceived that the incidence in this area might be high. To assure that all neural tube defects that occurred were noted, data for the study were collected from hospital birth-log books, patient records of all neural tube defect births, all stillbirth records, and from records of babies transferred to other regional hospitals. A reference group consisting of 10% of all nonneural tube defect births during the 20 years

Valleix's Sign.

Some patients present with clinical symptoms of localized tenderness and pain associated with a specific peripheral nerve, such as the ulnar nerve at the elbow or the sciatic nerve, which has been called, although rarely, "Valleix point" or "Valleix phenomenon". The purpose of this article was to translate and research the 719-page book "Traité des névralgies ou affections douloureuses des nerfs" dated 1841, dedicated solely to nerve pain (neuralgia), written by the French physician François Louis Isidore Valleix (1807-1855). He may have been the first person to observe and describe this pheno

Successful outcome of advanced abdominal pregnancy with exclusive omental insertion.

We report the case of an advanced abdominal pregnancy with exclusive omental insertion whose extrauterine location was not established until delivery by Cesarean section at 35 weeks' gestation. It is hard to believe that omental placentation alone would be sufficient to sustain a pregnancy beyond a gestation where the fetus is viable. However, this report challenges such myths and opens the debate as to what represents the minimal placental maternal viscus contact necessary to achieve fetal viability. The case also demonstrates the continuing difficulty in diagnosing this rare but serious cond

[Cardiopulmonary resuscitation in pregnant women: peculiarities].

This review main purpose is to show nursing the present knowledge about cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in pregnant women because of the scarce information published by Spanish Nursing Publications. The bibliographical research was made using both the Medline (from January 1982 to March 1998) and Index de Enfermería databases. There, we can find 32 references from which only 23 were selected (all of them belong to the Medline database) in spite of 3 chapters that had already been selected from other different books. Although maternal cardiac arrest rarely happens during pregnancy, it is ve

Individual anatomical variability and interrelations: impacts on swallowing functionality and clinical perspectives.

Have you ever wondered during clinical practice why the manifestations of swallowing dysfunctions are so heterogeneous? For example, an individual may go through the aging process and different illnesses with functional swallowing or, in another scenario, may present different forms of dysphagia manifestation. What would be the possible factors associated with the development or not of dysphagia besides those already known? By reading a book on human anatomy, it is possible to understand the complexity of anatomical structures and their different forms and correlations. For years, there have b

Substance abuse counselor certification in California: how is nicotine addiction addressed?

Persons entering substance abuse treatment smoke at rates three to four times that of the general population, but programs providing substance abuse treatment rarely address comorbid nicotine addiction. With California's recent adoption of a regulation requiring alcohol and other drug (AOD) counselors to be certified, this study explored the degree to which nicotine addiction education was required or recommended to obtain certification by examining pertinent documentation and Web sites. Findings reveal two main points. First, the text of the California AOD Counselor Certification regulation a

Updated Salivary Gland Immunohistochemistry: A Review.

CONTEXT.—: Salivary gland neoplasms are rare lesions in the head and neck (H&N) pathology realm. There are more than 20 malignant and 15 benign salivary gland neoplasms in the 5th edition of the World Health Organization classification of H&N tumors. These neoplasms consist of heterogeneous groups of uncommon diseases that make diagnosis and treatment challenging for the clinical team. Using an algorithmic immunohistochemical approach-defined tumor origin and type has proven to be effective and advantageous. Immunohistochemistry may be used as sort of a "diagnostic looking glass," not as a pos

Multicentric Cryptococcomas Mimicking Neoplasia in Immunocompetent Patient.

BACKGROUND: Fungal mass lesions in the central nervous system are, as a group, extremely rare. In this group cryptococcomas are the most common mass lesions seen. These cryptococcomas/mucinous pseudocysts are commonly only 3-10 mm in diameter and occur almost exclusively in the basal ganglia through contiguous spread from a basal meningitis through the Virchow-Robbin perivascular spaces. In rare cases a chronic granulomatous process may lead to formation of mass lesions that have a tumoral appearance. The arterial tree in the pig hindlimb from a more comprehensive perspective: anatomical study with translational implications.

INTRODUCTION: Although various vessel-related models using pig hindlimbs have been reported, descriptions of the arterial tree of pig hindlimbs are either rare or confusing. This cadaveric study was designed to explore and describe the anatomy of the arterial tree of pig hindlimbs and to compare with the arterial tree in human legs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The vascular anatomy of the hindlimb of lard infused pigs (Shanghai White Pig) was investigated (n = 20). The primary parameters were as follows: the course and branches of the arterial tree of pig hindlimbs; the discrepancy in the anatomica

Implementation and Delivery of a Comprehensive Bereavement Program in Pediatric Palliative Oncology.

Background/Objectives: Bereavement care is widely endorsed as a standard of pediatric oncology and palliative care, yet it remains inconsistently implemented across pediatric oncology programs in the United States, and few programs have reported longitudinal delivery metrics. We aim to describe the iterative development and delivery of a multi-component bereavement program within an outpatient pediatric palliative oncology (PPO) program, characterize the population served, and benchmark delivery against national guidelines. Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive analysis of bereavement

Infections After International Travel: Relevant Diagnoses in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Families can acquire infections that are rare or nonexistent in Germany by international travel for business or private reasons and by migration between countries. Children and adolescents have special risk profiles, and their course of illness may be nonspecific and/or severe. A structured travel history is essential so that regionally specific infections will not be overlooked. METHODS: This narrative review is based on publications of the last 25 years that were retrieved by a PubMed search on infections after international travel, with an emphasis on retrospective and prospect

Near real-time vaccine safety surveillance using electronic health records-a systematic review of the application of statistical methods.

PURPOSE: Pre-licensure studies have limited ability to detect rare adverse events (AEs) to vaccines, requiring timely post-licensure studies. With the increasing availability of electronic health records (EHR) near real-time vaccine safety surveillance using these data has emerged as an option. We reviewed methods currently used to inform development of similar systems for countries considering their introduction. METHODS: Medline, EMBASE and Web of Science were searched, with additional searches of conference abstract books. Questionnaires were sent to organizations worldwide to ascertain un

Malignant Mesothelioma Diagnosis.

CONTEXT: Malignant mesothelioma is a relatively rare pleural tumor that may mimic benign mesothelial lesions and various other tumors including carcinomas and sarcomas. This makes the diagnosis challenging for the pathologist. OBJECTIVE: To provide a brief but useful update on the immunohistochemical, cytogenetic, and molecular markers that are currently available for the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma. DATA SOURCES: Reference materials including peer-reviewed publications, text books, and consensus opinion reports among pathologists. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to correlate histologi

Intussusception incidence rates in 9 Zambian hospitals, 2007-2011: prerotavirus vaccine introduction.

BACKGROUND: Intussusception, a rare adverse event associated with rotavirus vaccines in some settings, is a common cause of intestinal obstruction in infants and toddlers globally with a peak age of 4-6 months. This age group may overlap with the extended age of administering rotavirus vaccine. METHODS: A retrospective (January 2007 to June 2009) and prospective (July 2009 to June 2012) survey was conducted in 9 Zambian hospitals. Children between 0 and 24 months who were operated on for intestinal obstruction/intussusception were identified in theatre log books. In the latter part of the sur
