Rat-bite fever as a cause of septic arthritis: a diagnostic dilemma.

Rat-bite fever results from an infection with the organism Streptobacillus moniliformis. Symptomatic patients often present with fever, malaise, cough, maculopapular rash, and occasional arthritis, and usually have a history of rodent exposure. This report describes a patient with rat-bite fever resulting in suppurative arthritis. The patient's diagnosis was made by culture of S moniliformis from his left wrist. The diagnosis was delayed, however, owing to the lack of an exposure history, atypical clinical presentation, and the unusual microbiologic characteristics shown by this organism.

SPIROCHAETA MORSUS MURIS, N.SP., THE CAUSE OF RAT-BITE FEVER : SECOND PAPER.

1. Since our first report on the discovery of the cause of rat-bite fever, we have been able to prove the existence of the same spirochete in five out of six more cases which have come under our observation. 2. The clinical symptoms of rat-bite fever are inflammation of the bitten parts, paroxysms of fever of the relapsing type, swelling of the lymph glands, and eruption of the skin, all occurring after an incubation period usually of from 10 to 22 days, or longer. 3. Our spirochete is present in the swollen local lesion of the skin and the enlarged lymph glands. But as the spirochetes are so …

Septic arthritis and concern for osteomyelitis in a child with rat bite fever.

Rat bite fever is a rare infection usually caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis. A case of septic arthritis and possible osteomyelitis as sequelae of rat bite fever in a pediatric patient is described.

Prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis: a case of rat bite fever.

We report a case of rat bite fever caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis in Taiwan. It manifested as prosthetic valve endocarditis, which was cured by cardiac valve replacement and antimicrobial therapy. The DNA sequence of the 16S rRNA gene of S. moniliformis was detected in valve specimens by PCR and nucleotide sequencing.

Spontaneous rat bite fever in non-human primates: a review of two cases.

Rat bite fever is a worldwide zoonotic, non-reportable disease. This entity encompasses similar, yet distinct, disease syndromes caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis or Spirillum minus. Naturally occurring rat bite fever has not been previously described in non-human primates. This report describes two cases of non-human primate rat bite fever caused by S. moniliformis; a rhesus macaque (Macaca mullata) with valvular endocarditis, and a titi monkey (Callicebus sp.) with septic arthritis. Potential sources of infection included direct contact, and ingestion of surface water or feed contaminat

Rat bite fever caused by Streptobacillus notomytis mimicking pyogenic polyarthritis: A case report.

We report the world's sixth case of rat bite fever caused by Streptobacillus notomytis that mimicked pyogenic polyarthritis and required surgical debridement in combination with prolonged antibiotic therapy. This case report highlights the higher severity of rat bite fever caused by S. notomytis compared to S. moniliformis.

Rat bite fever, a diagnostic challenge: case report and review of 29 cases.

Rats can transmit Streptobacillus moniliformis, which may cause rat-bite fever (RBF), a rare and potentially lethal zoonosis. Fastidious in vitro growth and unspecific symptoms, including fever, arthralgia, and polymorphous skin lesions, complicate the diagnosis. Rat-bite fever follows exposure to contaminated bodily fluids of infected rodents; however, reports on Streptobacillus moniliformis-related infections are few so far. A female patient presented with painful hemorrhagic pustules and purpuric lesions on hands and feet. She developed fever and migratory polyarthralgia. Blood culture yiel…

Rat-bite Fever: A Rare Diagnosis for a Common Pediatric Presentation: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Fever and rash is a common pediatric presentation to the emergency department but can present a diagnostic challenge to the clinician. Here we report the successful identification and treatment of a rare zoonotic exanthem that was facilitated by a thorough history and physical exam. CASE REPORT: Rat-bite fever is a potentially fatal systemic illness characterized by relapsing fever, rash, and migratory polyarthralgias. Treatment includes antibiotics for Streptobacillus moniliformis, the most common pathogen, as well as appropriate hygiene education and prevention strategies. We …
