Osteocalcin, one of the vitamin K-dependent bone proteins, has recently been implicated in bone resorption. Some males of a mutant strain of King-Holtzman rats exhibit an anomalous heritable defect manifested as either unilateral or bilateral ectopic testes. In the adult, these testes contain seemingly immature Sertoli and Leydig cells, seminiferous tubules greatly reduced in diameter, and exhibit arrested spermatogenesis. In vivo glucose-induced insulin secretion was greater in preweaned preobese 17-day-old Zucker rats than in the corresponding controls. This hypersecretion of insulin was reversed to normal by acute pretreatment with atropine. The blood eosinophil response of normal and congenitally athymic nude rats was studied following infection with the parasitic trematode Fasciola hepatica. A marked eosinophilia was evident irrespective of the presence or absence of a thymus in the infected rats, suggesting that thymus-dependent mechanisms are not essential for the induction of eosinophilia in the rat.

Adjuvant arthritis stands as the closest model to human rheumatoid arthritis. A genetic mutation (op) recognized to provoke osteopetrosis in rats, completely inhibits their ability to develop adjuvant arthritis. Osteopetrosis in the op mutant is linked to deficiencies in T-lymphocytes and macrophages functions. Therefore this animal model may be helpful for a better understanding of the immunoregulation impairment involved in adjuvant arthritis.

Homozygous Gunn rats lack bilirubin glucuronyltransferase, become jaundiced, and often develop kernicterus, thus providing a model for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Infective larvae of Brugia pahangi were injected subcutaneously into inbred PVG (-RTIc) rats, and 'nude' (PVG-rnu/rnu) (athymic) rats. Adult worms or circulating microfilariae were recovered from 20/34 (59%) of PVG-RTIc rats and from 30/30 (100%) of 'nude' rats. Fertile worms were regularly found in the lumbar lymphatics and hearts of both strains of rat. Blood eosinophilia first developed in PVG-RTIc rats about 17 days, and in all such animals by 6 weeks.
