Effects of tenotomy of the tensor tympani muscle on the acoustic reflex in dogs.

The acoustic reflex (AR) was recorded from 12 healthy mixed-breed dogs. Latency and amplitude were measured from ipsilateral and contralateral AR at stimulus frequencies of 1 and 2 kHz and intensities of 70 to 110 dB sound pressure level for ipsilateral AR and 70 to 120 dB hearing level for contralateral AR. Mean latencies for ipsilateral and contralateral AR were between 33.46 and 206.10 ms and between 45.26 and 180.89 ms, respectively, and amplitudes were between 0.14 and 1.79 cm3 and between 0.31 and 1.86 cm3 of air, respectively. Stimulus frequencies and intensities had significant effects

Recovery of crossed acoustic reflexes in brain stem auditory disorder.

Crossed acoustic reflexes were serially monitored in a patient receiving radiotherapy for an intra-axial brain stem tumor. Analysis revealed a pattern of systematic recovery as the brain stem lesion responded to therapy. Crossed reflexes were observed at more and more test frequencies, until responses were present on both ears for all test signals. Pure-tone sensitivity and speech intelligibility remained within the normal range throughout the observation period.

A Brainstem reticulotegmental neural ensemble drives acoustic startle reflexes.

The reticulotegmental nucleus (RtTg) has long been recognized as a crucial component of brainstem reticular formation (RF). However, the function of RtTg and its related circuits remain elusive. Here, we report a role of the RtTg in startle reflex, a highly conserved innate defensive behaviour. Optogenetic activation of RtTg neurons evokes robust startle responses in mice. The glutamatergic neurons in the RtTg are significantly activated during acoustic startle reflexes (ASR). Chemogenetic inhibition of the RtTg glutamatergic neurons decreases the ASR amplitudes. Viral tracing reveals an ASR n

Acoustic reflex preshoot: A sign of contraction of the tensor tympani muscle?

Two tiny muscles are attached to the ossicles of the middle ear: the stapedius, whose role as a protector of the inner ear against loud noise has been widely accepted, and the tensor tympani, which remains a mystery since no valid method of detecting its contraction has yet been developed. However, tonic contraction of the tensor tympani has been associated with a number of otological conditions including fullness, tinnitus, slight hearing loss, and Menière-like findings. Our hypothesis is that an easily recognizable sign in the acoustic immittance testing that is part of almost every basic au

Diagnostic utility of the acoustic reflex in predicting hearing in paediatric populations.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The sensitivity of prediction of acoustic reflex, in determining the level of hearing loss, is especially useful in paediatric populations. It is based on the difference between the pure tone stapedius reflex threshold and contralateral white noise. The white noise threshold was 60 dB and that of pure tone was 80 dB. Our objective was to determine the diagnostic sensitivity of the prediction of the acoustic reflex. METHODS: We studied children aged <10 years, from October 2011 to May 2012, by measuring the acoustic reflex with white noise and pure tone. We used co

The study of acoustic startle reflex in male patients with chronic schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the deficits of acoustic startle reflex (ASR) that might exist in Chinese patients with schizophrenia and the effects of antipsychotics on ASR. METHODS: Participants included 25 male patients with chronic schizophrenia treated with typical antipsychotics (typical group), 25 who were treated with atypical antipsychotic clozapine (clozapine group) and 25 healthy male subjects (control group) matched for age and years of education. Startle reflex to acoustic stimuli were examined in all subjects from the three groups. At the same day of startle testing, psychopathological s

Another cause for conductive hearing loss with present acoustic reflexes.

There are numerous potential causes of conductive hearing loss (HL). It is important to obtain a thorough history and perform a complete examination, including audiometric testing and radiographic evaluation when necessary. In this report, we present a patient with an intact tympanic membrane, no history of ear disease or trauma who as an adult developed progressive, conductive HL because of an anomalous course of a dehiscent facial nerve. In the patient with a conductive HL and at least partially intact reflexes, superior semicircular canal dehiscence, fracture of the stapes superstructure pr

The effects of neural synchronization and peripheral compression on the acoustic-reflex threshold.

This study investigates the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) dependency on stimulus phase utilizing low-level reflex audiometry [Neumann et al., Audiol. Neuro-Otol. 1, 359-369 (1996)]. The goal is to obtain optimal broadband stimuli for elicitation of the acoustic reflex and to obtain objective determinations of cochlear hearing loss. Three types of tone complexes with different phase characteristics were investigated: A stimulus that compensates for basilar-membrane dispersion, thus causing a large overall neural synchrony (basilar-membrane tone complex-BMTC), the temporally inversed stimulus

A neural network approach to the acoustic startle reflex and prepulse inhibition.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is the normal suppression of the startle reflex when an intense stimulus is preceded by a weak non-startling prestimulus. PPI is widely used as a model for sensorimotor gating processes and has been shown to be impaired in various neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. We have reproduced startle-like behavior and basic PPI modifications with a neural network. The network design was constrained by the attempt (1) to use as few connections as possible and (2) to relate neuroanatomical structures to the simulated network. Performance of the network was eval

Effectiveness of acoustic reflex threshold criteria in the diagnosis of retrocochlear pathology.

This study examines the acoustic reflex threshold criteria, derived from a large group of patients with cochlear hearing loss proposed by Cohen & Prasher (1992), in order to evaluate their effectiveness in differentiating between cochlear and retro-cochlear lesions. This criterion was tested on 63 patients with surgically confirmed cerebello-pontine angle (CPA) lesions. The false results obtained with this and other criteria were compared. The best balance between the false positive and negative results in the cochlear and retrocochlear group is provided by the criterion of any two adjacent te

Effects of ear canal pressure on threshold and growth of the acoustic reflex.

Acoustic reflex (AR) threshold and growth were measured in one ear for each of 20 normal-hearing individuals as pressure in the ear canal was varied between +/- 120 mm of H2O. These same parameters were studied in 10 of the subjects after disruption of the probe seal. Activating stimuli for AR threshold measures were 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz tones and broadband noise. The AR growth function was generated by a 500 Hz tone. As ear canal pressure was increased or decreased relative to the point of maximal compliance, systematic increases in AR threshold were observed for all activating stimul

Fatigue and recovery of the human acoustic stapedius reflex in industrial noise.

The fatiguability of the acoustic stapedius muscle reflex in an actual noisy industrial environment was investigated in normal-hearing subjects. In a laboratory situation a small depression was found with a considerable individual variability. The stapedius reflex recovered slowly, approximately as a linear function of time. In a field study on an entire day of exposure in a ship-building yard the reflex depression was on the average 4 dB in response to a stimulation of 2000 Hz 10 min after the end of the workday. This corresponds to less than 8 dB immediately at the end of the exposure.

A further examination of the use of the stapedius reflex in the diagnosis of acoustic neuroma.

Criteria proposed by ANDERSON et al. for the diagnosis of early acoustic neuromas using the acoustic stapedius reflex were examined. Populations of normal hearers and subjects with sensorineural hearing losses were studied and yielded high false-positive detection rates by the threshold criteria. It is suggested that the threshold asymmetry of the reflex may be more useful than the absolute threshold.

Identifying Otosclerosis with Aural Acoustical Tests of Absorbance, Group Delay, Acoustic Reflex Threshold, and Otoacoustic Emissions.

BACKGROUND: Otosclerosis is a progressive middle-ear disease that affects conductive transmission through the middle ear. Ear-canal acoustic tests may be useful in the diagnosis of conductive disorders. This study addressed the degree to which results from a battery of ear-canal tests, which include wideband reflectance, acoustic stapedius muscle reflex threshold (ASRT), and transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), were effective in quantifying a risk of otosclerosis and in evaluating middle-ear function in ears after surgical intervention for otosclerosis. PURPOSE: To evaluate the ab

Multivariate prediction of conductive dysfunction in well and NICU newborns using wideband acoustic immittance with acoustic reflex tests.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of newborn hearing screening is to detect permanent congenital hearing loss. However, the high incidence of middle ear fluid and debris in the ear canal at birth results in only a 5-10% positive predictive value, thus requires repeated screening, and can delay or complicate diagnosis of permanent hearing loss. The overall goal of this study was to assess tympanometric and ambient wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) tests and wideband acoustic reflex thresholds (ART) in well-baby and newborn intensive care (NICU) cohorts with four specific objectives: 1) Assess predictive ac

Addressing variability in the acoustic startle reflex for accurate gap detection assessment.

The acoustic startle reflex (ASR) is subject to substantial variability. This inherent variability consequently shapes the conclusions drawn from gap-induced prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex (GPIAS) assessments. Recent studies have cast doubt as to the efficacy of this methodology as it pertains to tinnitus assessment, partially, due to variability in and between data sets. The goal of this study was to examine the variance associated with several common data collection variables and data analyses with the aim to improve GPIAS reliability. To study this the GPIAS tests were c
