Reframing violence against women as a human rights violation: Evan Stark's Coercive Control.

Evan Stark claims that partner-perpetrated physical abuse and other forms of violence against women ought to be understood as a human rights … national law on issues of human rights and especially war crimes, and the consequent U.S. legacy of refusal to participate meaningfully in the international human rights process. The authors conclude that employing a human rights framework holds potential in the United States, but the paradigm shift Stark advocates will not materialize without widespread mobilization of …

Seven- to eight-year follow-up of the CoolCap trial of head cooling for neonatal encephalopathy.

INTRODUCTION: We sought to determine whether 18- to 22-mo neurodevelopmental outcomes predicted functional outcomes at 7-8 y for survivors of the CoolCap study of therapeutic hypothermia for neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. RESULTS: WeeFIM ratings were completed at 7-8 y of age on 62 (32 cooled; 30 standard care) of 135 surviving children who had had neurodevelopmental assessment at 18 mo. There was 1 refusal, 58 lost to follow-up, and 14 children whose centers declined to participate. Disability status at 18 mo was strongly associated with WeeFIM ratings (P < 0.001); there was

[Early detection and prevention of oral precancer. An enquiry among dentists in Switzerland].

Squamous cell carcinoma ranks eighth among the most common tumors worldwide. In many cases, these tumors develop from a preliminary phase (precancerosis). For different reasons, these preinitial carcinomas are recognised too late or not at all. The aim of this study was to find out about the dentists' state of knowledge, their management of these tumors and their readiness for a prevention campaign among Swiss dentists. 800 questionnaires were mailed or handed out to dentists nationwide. 22% of the questionnaires were returned. 64% of the dentists stated to be highly motivated for further educ

Determinants of successful completion and short-term benefits associated with temporary alcohol abstinence during Dry January in France: A prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Temporary alcohol abstinence campaigns (TAAC), such as Dry January, aim to encourage behavioural change in the general population. Despite its popularity, a comprehensive evaluation of the French version has not yet been conducted. This prospective study aimed to identify characteristics associated with successful completion of the challenge (i.e., remaining alcohol-free throughout January), and to assess improvements in drinking refusal self-efficacy, sleep quality, and mental and physical health. METHODS: A sample of 2123 French adults participating in Dry January 2024 completed

Exploring behavioural motivations of treatment refusal in cancer: a Q-methodological approach.

BACKGROUND: Cancer treatment refusal is known to lower survival rates and increase cancer symptoms in individuals with cancer. Behavioural motivations of treatment refusal need to be elucidated for better cancer care. Using Q-methodology, a mixed methods research approach, we explored behavioural motivations of treatment refusal in individuals diagnosed with cancer. METHOD: Thirty-nine individuals (n = 39; age = 49.2 ± 12.2 years) were recruited from Australia, the UK, and the USA, who had refused cancer treatment within the past decade. Participants completed an online demographic questionna

Remote Teaching and School Refusal Behavior - Lessons Learned from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

When the Norwegian government closed down schools and kindergartens in response to the increased spread of COVID-19, the use of homeschooling raised concerns about students with school refusal behavior and the school system's ability to address their special needs in these circumstances. Six students referred to the school absenteeism team were interviewed about their circumstances, using an author-developed interview. The results indicate that the students rated homeschooling as very satisfactory. Students with school refusal behavior participated in homeschooling and their attendance continu

Refusal to take ivermectin: the associated 'risk' factors in Hoima district, Uganda.

Community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI), for the control of onchocerciasis, was launched in Uganda in 1997. In East Africa, as in other endemic areas, the refusal to take the drug reduces treatment coverage and therefore poses a serious threat to attempts to eliminate onchocerciasis as a disease of public-health importance. In early 2003, an attempt was therefore made to determine the factors associated with refusal to take ivermectin during mass treatment in 2002, by interviewing the individuals, from three Ugandan villages with CDTI, who had been eligible to receive ivermectin. Willingness to Receive a COVID-19 Vaccination Among Incarcerated or Detained Persons in Correctional and Detention Facilities - Four States, September-December 2020.

Incarcerated and detained persons are at increased risk for acquiring COVID-19. However, little is known about their willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccination. During September-December 2020, residents in three prisons and 13 jails in four states were surveyed regarding their willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccination and their reasons for COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy or refusal. Among 5,110 participants, 2,294 (44.9%) said they would receive a COVID-19 vaccination, 498 (9.8%) said they would hesitate to receive it, and 2,318 (45.4%) said they would refuse to receive it. Refusal of male partner responsibility and pregnancy support: prevalence, associated factors and health outcomes in a cross sectional study in Harare, Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of fathers refusing responsibility during pregnancy has not received adequate attention in African studies. This paper assesses associated factors and pregnancy-related outcomes when fathers refuse to support partners' pregnancies and undertake parental responsibilities. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 15-49-year-old postnatal (1-6 weeks) women was conducted at six urban health facilities in Harare. Participants were interviewed about their male partners' refusal to support their pregnancies and parenting, bride price payments (indicating marriage commitment),

Bridging the divide between genomic science and indigenous peoples.

The new science of genomics endeavors to chart the genomes of individuals around the world, with the dual goals of understanding the role genetic factors play in human health and solving problems of disease and disability. From the perspective of indigenous peoples and developing countries, the promises and perils of genomic science appear against a backdrop of global health disparity and political vulnerability. These conditions pose a dilemma for many communities when attempting to decide about participating in genomic research or any other biomedical research. Genomic research offers the po

Understanding how, why, for whom, and under what circumstances opt-out blood-borne virus testing programmes work to increase test engagement and uptake within prison: a rapid-realist review.

BACKGROUND: Prisons represent a unique opportunity to diagnose blood-borne viruses. Opt-out testing is receiving increasing interest, as a result of mounting evidence to suggest that the manner in which a test offer is delivered, affects test uptake. Although the effectiveness of opt-out testing within the prison setting has been established, robust explanations are required for the variation in outcomes reported. METHODS: Rapid-realist review methodology was used to synthesise the literature on prison-based opt-out testing. The review was carried out in three phases. Phase one: An expert pan

Underestimation of HIV prevalence in surveys when some people already know their status, and ways to reduce the bias.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify refusal bias due to prior HIV testing, and its effect on HIV prevalence estimates, in general-population surveys. DESIGN: Four annual, cross-sectional, house-to-house HIV serosurveys conducted during 2006-2010 within a demographic surveillance population of 33 000 in northern Malawi. METHODS: The effect of prior knowledge of HIV status on test acceptance in subsequent surveys was analysed. HIV prevalence was then estimated using ten adjustment methods, including age-standardization; multiple imputation of missing data; a conditional probability equations approach incor

To be vaccinated or not? A survey of Turkish emergency physicians regarding smallpox.

We investigated Turkish emergency physicians' opinions about the threat of smallpox, smallpox vaccination, and the treatment of patients with suspected smallpox, and sought to identify factors that affect willingness to receive smallpox vaccination. Anonymous surveys were sent by mail to university-affiliated Emergency Departments in Turkey. Ten of the 21 university-based Emergency Medicine programs participated in the study, and 125 physicians (48% of all emergency physicians in Turkey) completed the survey. The probability of a bioterror attack using smallpox within Turkish borders was viewe

Social anxiety disorder in adolescents who stutter: A risk for school refusal.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering is a childhood-onset fluency disorder. Part of the counseling for middle and high school students with persistent stuttering is related to school refusal. Anxiety disorders are known to contribute to school refusal. However, it is not known whether social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a factor in school refusal among adolescents who stutter. METHODS: In our first study, we examined the relationship between school refusal and SAD in 84 middle and high school students who stutter; 26% of the 84 students were in the school refusal group and the remaining 74% were in the school

Bone Grafts, Bone Substitutes and Regenerative Medicine Acceptance for the Management of Bone Defects Among French Population: Issues about Ethics, Religion or Fear?

Several techniques exist to manage bone defects in patients: bone grafts (autograft, allograft, xenograft), use of synthetic bone substitutes, or use of the products of bone regenerative medicine. Studies generally focus on their efficacy, but few focus on their acceptance. Our objectives were to assess their theoretical acceptance among the French general population, and to identify issues justifying refusals, by mean of an open e-questionnaire. The questionnaire was submitted to a general French population, and explained these techniques in an understandable way. Participants were asked to s

Challenges in Patient Enrollment and Retention in Clinical Studies for Alcoholic Hepatitis: Experience of the TREAT Consortium.

The TREAT Consortium has carried out clinical studies on alcoholic hepatitis (AH) for over 4 years. We encountered problems with participant … use of structural issues surrounding their hospital admission, and encounter a high rate of patient refusal to participate. Nonetheless, more than half of the patients who met the eligibility criteria for moderate or severe AH were entered into clinical trials. Retention rates for the observational study are relatively low. These findings need to be accounted for in cli …
