Obsessive-compulsive symptoms predict increased fronto-parahippocampal synchronisation during thought suppression.

BACKGROUND: Thought suppression is suggested as a causal factor in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as it can lead to an increase in intrusive thoughts. However, the neural mechanisms through which obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) influence thought suppression, particularly in the context of preferential processing of negatively valenced stimuli, remains unclear. We hypothesized that OCS would predict increased inhibitory communication between frontal and parahippocampal neurocircuitry during the suppression of negative words. Additionally, we tested an exploratory analysis to see wheth

Towards a genetics of semantics? False memories and semantic memory organization in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder caused by microdeletion of a critical region on chromosome 7q11.23. At the cognitive level, it is usually characterized by moderate intellectual disability and deficits in visuospatial skills, while showing relative strengths in verbal skills and nonverbal reasoning. Despite their apparent good performance with verbal skills, previous studies have suggested that the structure of semantic memory may be altered in people diagnosed with WS. In this study, we explored the organization of semantic memory in WS through the Deese-Ro

Investigating the neural basis of schematic false memories by examining schematic and lure pattern similarity.

ABSTRACTSchemas allow us to make assumptions about the world based upon previous experiences and aid in memory organisation and retrieval. However, a reliance on schemas may also result in increased false memories to schematically related lures. Prior neuroimaging work has linked schematic processing in memory tasks to activity in prefrontal, visual, and temporal regions. Yet, it is unclear what type of processing in these regions underlies memory errors. The current study examined where schematic lures exhibit greater neural similarity to schematic targets, leading to this memory error, as co

Reconsidering therapeutic action: Loewald, cognitive neuroscience and the integration of memory's duality.

Both Loewald's relational theory of memory and the Self-Memory System (SMS) of cognitive neuroscience describe a dual memory system, one system that is experience-near sensory-perceptual, and the other, symbolic and conceptual. In contrast to perspectives that locate therapeutic action in either altering implicit procedural memories or interpreting explicit historical content, we argue that psychological health emerges from effective integration of both memory systems, achieved through a combination of transference dynamics and analytic insight. We support this position by elaborating four key

Differences in anger expression between individuals with and without headache after controlling for depression and anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether anger and anger expression are different between persons with and without headache after controlling for depression and anxiety. BACKGROUND: Persons with headache may experience more problems with anger and its expression when compared with persons without headache. It is important to establish whether differences exist for persons with and without headache on trait anger and anger expression independent of depression and anxiety. To date, however, this issue has received little attention in the empirical literature. The current study measured trait anger, anger

Suppression and repression in discrepant self-other ratings: relations with thought control and cardiovascular reactivity.

Individual differences in self-other disagreement may tap phenomena that have been notoriously difficult to assess. For example, subjects who believe they possess a trait while their acquaintances disagree may be exhibiting suppression. Further, subjects who deny a trait while acquaintances believe it is present may be displaying repression. In the first study, both subjects and their closest friends rated the subject's hostility level. Suppressors and repressors were expected to exhibit enhanced thought control, and indeed these individuals were more able not to think about white bears when i

Comparison of semantic and phonological false memories in short- and long-term tests.

The Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm has been at the centre of false memory research. Whereas most work with this paradigm has examined memory at the long term and with semantically associated lists, the present study examines phonological and semantic false memories at both short- and long-term delays. In two experiments, participants studied short lists containing six (Experiment 1) or four (Experiment 2) items, either semantically or phonologically related to the same non-studied critical items (CI). Following each list, participants completed 36 trials of an immediate recognition ta

[Episodic autobiographical memory in depression: a review].

INTRODUCTION: Autobiographical memory and personal identity (self) are linked by a reciprocal relationship. Autobiographical memory is critical for both grounding and changing the self. Individuals' current self-views, beliefs, and goals influence their recollections of the past. According to Tulving, episodic memory is characterized by autonoetic consciousness, which is associated with a sense of the self in the past (emotions and goals) and mental reliving of an experience. Its close relationship with self and emotion strongly involves episodic autobiographical memory in the psychopathology

Adult recollections of childhood memories: What details can be recalled?

In a memory survey, adult respondents recalled, dated, and described two earliest positive and negative memories that they were highly confident were memories. They then answered a series of questions that focused on memory details such as clothing, duration, weather, and so on. Few differences were found between positive and negative memories, which on average had 4/5 details and dated to the age of 6/6.5 years. Memory for details about activity, location, and who was present was good; memory for all other details was poorer or at floor. Taken together, these findings indicate that (full) ear

Abreaction for conversion disorder: systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The value of drug interviews in the treatment of conversion disorder is at present unknown. AIMS: To review all the available papers published in English that report on the use of drug interviews for treating conversion/dissociative disorder. METHOD: Databases (including EMBASE, MEDLINE and PsycINFO) were searched from 1920 to 2009. Selected publications had to report on the use of drug interviews in people diagnosed with a conversion/dissociative disorder. Qualitative and quantitative data were extracted. Predictors of a positive response were ascertained using meta-analytic tec

Memory illusions: false recall and recognition in adults with Asperger's syndrome.

As persons on the autistic spectrum are known not to use semantic features of word lists to aid recall, they might show diminished susceptibility to illusory memories that typically occur with lists of associated items. Alternatively, since such individuals also have poor source monitoring, they might show greater susceptibility. The authors found that adults with Asperger's syndrome (n = 10) recalled similar proportions of a nonpresented strong associate of the study list items, compared with controls (n = 15). In Experiment 2, rates of true and false recognition of study list associates did

Familiarity breeds distortion: the effects of media exposure on false reports concerning media coverage of the terrorist attacks in london on 7 July 2005.

The present experiment investigated whether increased media exposure could lead to an increase in memory distortions regarding a traumatic public event: the explosion of the No. 30 bus in Tavistock Square, London on 7 July 2005. A total of 150 Swedish and 150 UK participants completed a series of questionnaires about their memory of either (i) the aftermath of the explosion, (ii) a non-existent computerised reconstruction of the moment of the explosion, or (iii) non-existent closed circuit television footage of the moment of the explosion. In line with the availability heuristic, U.K. particip

Defensive coping in relation to casual blood pressure and self-reported daily hassles and life events.

Our aim was to investigate the relationships between defensiveness and repression, on the one hand, and self-reported stressor exposure and resting blood pressure, on the other hand. In addition, different operationalizations of defensiveness and repression were compared. Participants were 310 male and 90 female employees representing a wide range of occupations. Before a medical examination, all subjects completed questionnaires measuring defensiveness, anxiety, repression, daily hassles, and life events. After controlling for potentially confounding variables, multiple regression analyses re

Repression and splitting: towards a method of conceptual comparison.

An attempt is made to compare two psychoanalytic concepts which by 'belonging' to different psychoanalytic groups have come to be defined and used differently. The paper is also an inquiry into the possibility of a comparative psychoanalytic method. The two concepts are 'repression' and 'splitting of the ego' and an examination is made of the semantic similarities and differences. Some clinical material is offered that adds indicative clinical evidence to test the semantic comparison. The aim is to answer the question: Are the terms simply alternative ones for similar clinical phenomena? The p

Motherhood, motherliness, and psychogenic infertility.

This paper revives an issue dormant in recent psychoanalytic literature--that of psychogenic causes of infertility. Modern technology to overcome anatomic or physiological blocks to fertility has probably contributed to the assumption that the psychogenic issue is obsolete. However, a broader perspective on the vicissitudes of pregnancy and motherhood in women who have particular psychological problems warrants reconsideration of the rationale for psychoanalytic evaluation and treatment. Three case presentations illustrate similar psychological issues that may interfere with the ability or wis

Novelty-seeking, fantasy, and sensitization in chronic insomniacs.

13 chronic primary insomniacs and a matched group of normal sleepers were studied in terms of their level of novelty-seeking, ability to fantasize, and cognitive rumination. All-night electroencephalographic patterns confirmed insomniac-control sleep differences. Chronic insomniacs differed from normal sleepers on a measure of cognitive activity as a defense pattern (Byrne's Repression-Sensitization Scale) but did not differ on measures of need for cognitive stimulation (Pearson's Internal and External Cognition Scales), ability to fantasize (Betts' imagery task), or preference for fantasy (Pe

[Psychological aspects of ulcerative rectocolitis (author's transl)].

Ulcerative rectocolitis has been known for quite some time as a psychosomatic disease, it is an organic disease occurring in people with a particular personality rendering them susceptible to certain conflicts or stress which would be able to play a causing role in the appearance or exacerbations of the disease. Insofar as the psychological study is concerned, there are two important points to keep in mind: the role of psychological trauma as a stimulating factor and the basic personality. In 90% of the cases observed, psychological factors are found as provoking the hemorrage, as found by Gro
