To determine which variables most accurately define congestive heart failure (CHF) in infants, 41 patients (median age 2.5 months) were graded by four pediatric cardiologists for the presence and severity of CHF based on the following variables: amount of formula consumed per feeding, feeding time, history of diaphoresis or tachypnea, growth parameters, respiratory and heart rates, respiratory pattern, perfusion, presence of edema, diastolic filling sounds, and hepatomegaly. There were 19 patients graded as having no CHF, nine as mild, seven moderate, and six severe CHF. The most sensitive and

The severity of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is diagnosed with polysomnography (PSG), during which patients are monitored by over 20 physiological sensors overnight. These sensors often bother patients and may affect patients' sleep and OSA. This study aimed to investigate a method for analyzing patient snore sounds to detect the severity of OSA. Using a microphone placed at the patient's bedside, the snoring and breathing sounds of 22 participants were recorded while they simultaneously underwent PSG. We examined some features from the snoring and breathing sounds and examined the correlati

BACKGROUND: Delayed right-sided traumatic diaphragmatic hernia (TDH) may be overlooked during polytrauma assessment because concomitant injuries dominate attention and the liver can obscure diaphragmatic discontinuity. Subsequent respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms may remain nonspecific until obstruction or visceral compromise develops.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 50-year-old man presented with more than 20 h of nausea and vomiting 19 months after severe blunt trauma. Since the injury, he had experienced intermittent dyspnea, chest tightness, postprandial fullness, abdominal distension, and ab

The infant or child presenting to the physician's office with persistent or recurrent wheezing during the first two year's of life poses a diagnostic dilemma. A careful medical history should document risk factors for persistent wheezing, including maternal smoking, feeding practices, environmental history, and family history of asthma or cystic fibrosis (CF). A suggested diagnostic approach to the causes of infantile wheezing is outlined. A chest radiograph is non-specific, but may suggest a congenital airway anomaly. Infant pulmonary function testing (IPFT) can help differentiate between cen

Various wheezing phenotypes can be identified based on differences in natural histories, risk factors and responses to treatment. In epidemiologic studies, atopic asthma or virus-induced wheezing can be discriminated by the presence or the absence of sensitization to allergens. Children with asthma have been shown to present lower levels of lung function. Patients with viral respiratory infections evolve from normal lung function to enhanced airway reactivity. The objective of this study was to identify genes and polymorphisms associated with different wheezing phenotypes. Using data obtained

A reliable, remote, and continuous real-time respiratory sound monitor with automated respiratory sound analysis ability is urgently required in many clinical scenarios-such as in monitoring disease progression of coronavirus disease 2019-to replace conventional auscultation with a handheld stethoscope. However, a robust computerized respiratory sound analysis algorithm for breath phase detection and adventitious sound detection at the recording level has not yet been validated in practical applications. In this study, we developed a lung sound database (HF_Lung_V1) comprising 9,765 audio file

BACKGROUND: Spectral characteristics of breath sounds in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have not previously been compared, although the structural differences in these disorders might be reflected in breath sounds.
METHODS: Flow standardised inspiratory breath sounds in patients with COPD (n = 17) and stable asthma (n = 10) with significant airways obstruction and in control patients without any respiratory disorders (n = 11) were compared in terms of estimates of the power spectrum. Breath sounds were recorded simultaneously at the chest and at the trachea.

Lung auscultation has long been used as a valuable medical tool to assess respiratory health and has gotten a lot of attention in recent years, notably following the coronavirus epidemic. Lung auscultation is used to assess a patient's respiratory role. Modern technological progress has guided the growth of computer-based respiratory speech investigation, a valuable tool for detecting lung abnormalities and diseases. Several recent studies have reviewed this important area, but none are specific to lung sound-based analysis with deep-learning architectures from one side and the provided inform

PURPOSE: We exposed premature infants to womb-like sounds to evaluate such exposure on breathing and cardiovascular patterns. We hypothesized that these sounds would reduce apnea and intermittent hypoxemia, enhance parasympathetic outflow, and improve cardiovascular patterns.
METHODS: A total of 20 cases and 5 control infants at ≤32-36 weeks corrected gestational age participated in a prospective observational cohort study. Twenty-four hours of continuous ECG, respiratory and oxygen saturation data were collected in all infants. Womb-like sounds were played intermittently in 6-hour blocks. Sa

BACKGROUND: Intelligent wearable devices have potential for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) monitoring, but the effectiveness of combining cough and blowing sounds for disease assessment is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to assess COPD severity via physiological parameters and audio data collected by a smartwatch.
METHODS: COPD patients underwent lung function tests, electrocardiograms, blood gas analysis, and 6-min walk tests. The patients' peripheral arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate (HR), and respiratory rate (RR) were continuo

Purpose: Cervical auscultation (CA) uses a stethoscope or microphone to complement the clinical swallow examination by interpreting swallowing sounds and swallow-respiratory coordination. This study investigated the effects of structured CA training on CA-rating agreement with Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and CA rater reliability.Method: Thirty-nine speech-language pathologists participated in a structured CA training course at Gothenburg University. They rated nine swallow-respiratory sound recordings which were simultaneously recorded during FEES. Swallow sounds were r
