[Functional state of the suprasegmental structures of the brain in experimental secondary contracture of the facial muscles].

For the first time the model of secondary contractures of facial nerves was used to study by long-term sterotaxic implanted electrodes the state of the cortex, amygdal complex, reticular formation of the middle brain, reticular nuclei of the pons and nuclei of the facial nerves. The experiments were accomplished on 31 rabbits. The experiments confirmed a close functional connnection of the VII pair of cranial nerves with the limbico-reticular complex. In secondary contracture there were factors facilitating the influence of pons reticular structures on the deficient system the facial nerve--fa…

[Cerebral alcohol dehydrogenase-- a marker of individual ethanol tolerance in ethanol intoxication].

Brain compartments differing by topical chemical location of alcohol dehydrogenases (ADH) were studied on forensic medical material. ADH were found in magnocytes of giant-cell reticular formation, neuronal nuclei in the blue spot, and capillaries, but not in neurons of the ganglionary layer of the cerebral limbic cortex. ADH activity in the studied brain compartments depended on the level of exogenous ethanolemia. Increased ADH activity in the reticular formation magnocytes characterized the individual tolerance in severe ethanol intoxication. Cerebral ADHs are markers of ethanol intoxication.

Brainstem afferents to the rostral (juxtafacial) nucleus paragigantocellularis: integration of exteroceptive and interoceptive sensory inputs in the ventral tegmentum.

The rostral pole of the nucleus paragigantocellularis (PGi), termed juxtafacial PGi, lies medially adjacent to the facial nucleus and lateral to the pyramidal tract and the nucleus gigantocellularis pars alpha in the caudal ventral pons. This narrow region of the ventral pontine reticular formation is an afferent to the nucleus locus coeruleus, and contains neurons which have been implicated in pain processing, cardiovascular regulation, respiratory control and arousal. Here, we studied brainstem afferents to the juxtafacial PGi using retrograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated ho…

Dynamic Interaction between Cortico-Brainstem Pathways during Training-Induced Recovery in Stroke Model Rats.

Reorganization of residual descending motor circuits underlies poststroke recovery. We previously clarified a causal relationship between th … ealed abundant sprouting of axons from the motor cortex in the red nucleus but not in the medullary reticular formation during the early phase of recovery. This primary contribution of the cortico-rubral tract was demonstrated by its selective blockade, whereas selective cortico-reticular tract silencing had little effect. Interestingly, cortico-rubral tract blockade …

Functional plasticity of glutamatergic neurons of medullary reticular nuclei after spinal cord injury in mice.

Spinal cord injury disrupts the descending command from the brain and causes a range of motor deficits. Here, we use optogenetic tools to investigate the functional plasticity of the glutamatergic reticulospinal drive of the medullary reticular formation after a lateral thoracic hemisection in female mice. Sites evoking stronger excitatory descending drive in intact conditions are the most impaired after injury, whereas those associated with a weaker drive are potentiated. After lesion, pro- and anti-locomotor activities (that is, initiation/acceleration versus stop/deceleration) are overall p…

[Neuroanatomic bases of hypocretin actions on the ascending reticular activating system: a contribution to narcolepsy physiopathology].

The present study describes at the ultrastructural level the hypocretinergic innervation of brainstem reticular formation neurons that project to the medial frontal cortex in the rat. In addition, we assess, by using dual immunofluorescence techniques, the proportion of those reticular neurons containing specific neurotransmitters. Our results indicate that hypocretinergic axons make asymmetric synapses with neurons within the locus coeruleus, ventral tegmental area, dorsal raphe nucleus and laterodorsal tegmental nucleus that target the medial frontal cortex, Hypocretins could facilitate wake…

Brainstem pathology in spasmodic dysphonia.

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a primary focal dystonia of unknown pathophysiology, characterized by involuntary spasms in the laryngeal muscles during speech production. We examined two rare cases of postmortem brainstem tissue from SD patients compared to four controls. In the SD patients, small clusters of inflammation were found in the reticular formation surrounding solitary tract, spinal trigeminal, and ambigual nuclei, inferior olive, and pyramids. Mild neuronal degeneration and depigmentation were observed in the substantia nigra and locus coeruleus. No abnormal protein accumulations and …

Antiemetics in children receiving cancer chemotherapy.

Nausea and vomiting are debilitating side effects that often accompany the administration of chemotherapy and may lead to adverse physiological and psychological effects. Chemotherapy agents usually stimulate the chemoreceptor trigger zone, which then sends signals to the vomiting center in the medullary lateral reticular formation. The neurochemistry of vomiting involves serotonin and serotonin S3 receptors. Nausea and vomiting are difficult to treat once they have occurred, and prior poor antiemetic control may lead to future anticipatory nausea and vomiting. Thus, good antiemetic regimens m…

[Interactions of the superior colliculus and the sensorimotor cortex in the alert rabbit].

The tonic increased influence of the superior colliculus (SC) on the formation of visual responses of the sensorimotor cortex (SMC) was shown on the alert rabbits. It was shown that SC influence was realized through tectothalamocortical (nucleus lateralis posterior) canal relation. It was established that SMC of the alert rabbits in its turn exerts the inhibitory phasic influence on SC function. The obtained data are discussed in the light of participation of the colliculo-cortical and cortico-collicular interactions in the organization of the visual-motor coordination necessary for realizatio

Distribution of simple esterase in the nuclei and fiber tracts of the medulla oblongata of squirrel (Funambulus palmarum).

The distribution of simple esterase has been studied in the nuclei and fiber tracts of the medulla oblongata. The simple esterase activity has mainly been observed in the grey matter. The white matter did not reveal enzymatic activity. In the grey matter also the cranial nerve nuclei are intensely stained as compared to intrinsic and reticular nuclei. The distributive pattern of simple esterase in the nuclei has been discussed in relation to its metabolic involvement in brain.

The pathology of drop attacks: a case report.

A 65-year-old man had four drop attacks in several days and then a fixed stroke with quadriplegia. At autopsy infarction in the lower pons and upper medulla affected principally the corticospinal tracts. Tegmental destruction included reticular formation nuclei with rostral projections, but spared the lateral reticular formation nuclei, from which arise the descending reticulospinal tracts. This case is the first detailed autopsy report of a patient with drop attacks, and supports the view that at least some drop attacks are caused by transient ischemia of the corticospinal tracts.

Essential hypertension: could the basic defect be in blood supply of vasomotor centre?

Various factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension, although the exact cause of essential hypertension is still unknown. In this paper it is suggested that the basic pathology in essential hypertension may be an inherited defect in the blood supply of that part of reticular formation of rostral ventrolateral medulla which contains the pressor area. The posited defect is one in which the arterial branch supplying blood to the above-mentioned pressor area of vasomotor center arises from an artery which is stenosed. The other branches of this stenosed artery supply…

Origins of serotonergic projections to the spinal cord in rat: an immunocytochemical-retrograde transport study.

The origins of the serotonergic projections to the spinal cord in the rat were determined by employing the retrograde cell marker HRP coupled with the unlabeled antibody, peroxidase-antiperoxidase immunocytochemical method of Sternberger. Large numbers of stained neurons (greater than 70%) in the medullary raphe nuclear complex were found to contain both HRP retrogradely transported from the spinal cord and positive 5-HT staining. These serotonergic cell groups, including the nucleus raphe obscurus, raphe pallidus, raphe magnus, and the ventral parts of the reticular formation, project to all …

Role of parabrachial nucleus in submandibular salivary secretion induced by bitter taste stimulation in rats.

When rats lick a bitter taste solution such as quinine-hydrochloride, they secrete profuse amounts of saliva. The salivation has a higher fl … uding the so-called taste area, and ventral part of the parabrachial nucleus, including the pontine reticular formation. Neuroanatomical study using a retrograde tracer, Fluoro-gold, revealed that the neurons sending their axons to the superior salivatory nucleus, parasympathetic secretory center, were located mainly in the pontine reticular formation ventral to the …
