CRAO is an ophthalmic and medical emergency. This case is a reminder that diagnosis and management of CRAO begins with ophthalmologists but immediately thereafter care involves emergency cardiovascular and neurological similar to cerebral stroke.

PURPOSE: To report a case of branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) followed by branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) and paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) in a patient with confirmed calciphylaxis.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is an ocular emergency and is the ocular analogue of cerebral stroke. It results in profound, usually monocular vision loss, and is associated with significant functional morbidity. The risk factors for CRAO are the same atherosclerotic risk factors as for stroke and heart disease. Crohn disease is an inflammatory bowel disease frequently associated with extraintestinal manifestations. Ocular manifestations are uncommon but may cause significant morbidity, including blindness. We report the first case of a 9-year-old boy with biopsy-proven Crohn disease who developed a cilioretinal artery-sparing central retinal artery occlusion. After 2 months of follow-up, the patient developed optic atrophy with no change in visual acuity.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is considered to be an acute stroke of the eye that results in profound visual loss. Spontaneous recovery rates are poor. Most CRAOs are caused by thromboembolism in the central retinal artery. Current standard therapies for CRAO that aim to restore perfusion to the retina and optic nerve head have not been shown to alter the natural course of the disease. We describe a 66-year-old Japanese man in whom central retinal artery occlusion followed cardiac catheterization. After the procedure, blurred vision was noted in the right eye, and ophthalmological examination revealed an occlusion. Central retinal artery occlusion is a very rare but serious complication of cardiac catheterization. We should anticipate this potential risk to ensure prompt detection and treatment.

PURPOSE: There is increasing evidence that the common respiratory human pathogen Chlamydia pneumoniae has a causative role in atherosclerosis. We investigated the association of this pathogen with acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO).

The cases of 23 patients with unilateral combined central retinal artery-central retinal vein obstruction are described.
