Rest-Based Concussion Management of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Providers.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to survey pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) providers on their management of 2 hypothetical acute concussion s … providers surveyed recommended a management strategy that included a moderate degree of a delay of return to school and sports. Given recent evidence suggesting that prolonged rest does not reduce the risk of prolonged concussion symptoms, recommendations of periods of cognitive rest, particularly absences from school, should be approached cautiously. Future stud …

Efficacy of dual-track group CBT on emotion-related school attendance challenges and parent-adolescent perceptual bias among Chinese adolescents with depression: A non-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Interventions addressing emotion-related school attendance challenges in adolescents with depression often face limited efficacy, partly due to parent-adolescent perceptual biases. The effectiveness of dual-track family interventions remains underexplored. This study evaluated the preliminary clinical effectiveness of a dual-track parent-adolescent group cognitive behavioral therapy (GCBT) program and explored parent-adolescent perceptual bias as a potential process marker. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study included 71 adolescents with depression and school refusal. Participa

The hidden challenges of return migration: Linguistic and academic re-adaptation of Syrian students to the Arabic Education System.

While extensive research has examined refugee students' educational adaptation in host countries, the educational reintegration phase following voluntary return remains underexplored. This qualitative study investigates the linguistic and academic adaptation experiences of Syrian students transitioning from Turkish-medium education in Türkiye to Arabic-medium schooling in Syria after voluntary return. The study addresses an overarching question: how do returnee students experience the linguistic, academic, social, and psychosocial dimensions of this reverse educational transition? Using an exp

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between PROs and perceived confidence when performing functional performance tasks in high school athletes with a history of ankle sprain. DESIGN: Descriptive stud

Physician recommended school accommodations and student outcomes following a mild traumatic brain injury among youth with persistent post-concussive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Post-concussion return-to-learn (RTL) guidelines include implementation of school accommodations. Yet, little is known about physician recommendations for school accommodations and their impact, particularly among youth experiencing persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS). OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between physician recommended school accommodations and student outcomes among youth experiencing PPCS. METHODS: Data from a randomized comparative effectiveness trial was used. Physician recommended school accommodations (≤90 days post-injury) were collected via chart

The Back to School asthma study: the effect of montelukast on asthma burden when initiated prophylactically at the start of the school year.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric asthma hospitalizations peak in early autumn. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of montelukast therapy in reducing the asthma burden in children when initiated prophylactically on school return. METHODS: This was a randomized, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of children with asthma aged 6 to 14 years. No minimum asthma symptoms were required, and patients could continue inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) use. Montelukast, 5 mg, chewable tablet (n = 580) or matching placebo (n = 582) was taken the night before the first day of school and nightly the

[Implications on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Narcissistic Personality Pathology in Adolescents Based on the Sequelae of the Covid-19 Pandemic].

The COVID-19 pandemic caused more adolescents with a pathological narcissistic personality to seek clinical as well as psychotherapeutic treatment due to suicidal crises, breakdown of social functioning and inability to continue school attendance. Recent study results show that youth with personality disorders (pd) had more trouble returning to school and to everyday life following pandemic related closures of schools. In a sample of adolescent patients with pd who were treated with transference focused psychotherapy (TFP-A) in a day-clinic programsignificantlymore juveniles remained absent fr

Supporting return to study and return to work in the patient with persistent post-concussion symptoms: A biopsychosocial approach.

BACKGROUND: Concussion, or mild uncomplicated traumatic brain injury (mTBI), is a common condition that can occur in sports, motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults/violence and occupational settings. While symptom resolution is usually expected within 2-4 weeks, a minority of patients (up to 30%) experience persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) that impact cognitive, physical and emotional functioning. These prolonged symptoms can interfere with a patient's ability to return to school or work, creating uncertainty for patients, employers and treating practitioners. OBJECTIVE: This arti…

Premature return to play and return to learn after a sport-related concussion: physician's chart review.

OBJECTIVE: To determine what proportion of patients experience an exacerbation of their symptoms as a result of premature return to play (RTP) and return to learn (RTL) following sport-related concussions. DESIGN: Retrospective study of electronic medical records from the office-based practice of one family and sport medicine physician who had systematically provided recommendations for cognitive and physical rest based on existing consensus recommendations. Two blinded authors independently reviewed each chart, which included Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) and SCAT2 symptom self-rep

Explaining educational differences in return to work after early breast cancer: a mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms behind the effect of education on the return to work (RTW) of survivors of breast cancer (BCS) are unknown. METHODS: We used data from 2461 BCS from the prospective cohort CANTO. Using inverse odds weights we studied the mediating effect of pre-existing comorbidities, clinical factors, post-treatment health related quality of life, working conditions and household composition in the association between education and non-RTW. We used education in three categories. All models were adjusted for age at diagnosis. RESULTS: Non-RTW increased at lower levels of education.
