Contrasting Responses of Rhizosphere Bacterial and Fungal Communities of Paeonia ludlowii to Habitat Transition.

Habitat transition can reorganize plant-associated microbial communities, yet whether rhizosphere bacteria and fungi respond similarly to the transition from native to introduced habitats remains unclear. Here, we investigated this question in the endangered plant Paeonia ludlowii by comparing rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities across three native and two introduced sites in Xizang. Both bacterial and fungal communities showed significant site-associated differentiation and strongly concordant spatial patterns. However, their responses differed markedly: bacterial richness remained r…

Integrating Microbiological Indicators and Shotgun Metagenomics for the Assessment of the Rhizosphere Microbiome of Medicinal Plants.

Medicinal plants are rich sources of bioactive secondary metabolites, yet their long-term effects on the rhizosphere (RS) microbial communities remain poorly understood, particularly with respect to microbial selection and functional potential. This study evaluated the number of selected groups of microorganisms culturable in vitro in the RS and bulk soil (BS) within 10-year monocultures of 11 medicinal plant species, and as a targeted case study, we performed shotgun metagenomic profiling for Allium ursinum. The abundance of microorganisms differed markedly among plant species, indicating spe…

Opposite Effects of Planting on Antibiotic Resistomes in Rhizosphere Soil with Different Sulfamethoxazole Levels.

Achieving consensus about the rhizosphere effect on soil antibiotic resistomes is challenging due to the variability in antibiotic concentrations, sources, and the elusory underlying mechanisms. Here, we characterized the antibiotic resistomes in both the rhizosphere and bulk soils of soybean plants grown in environments with varying levels of antibiotic contamination, using sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as a model compound. We also investigated the factors influencing resistome profiles. Soybean cultivation altered the structure of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) and increased their absolute abund…

Rhizosphere enrichment and crop utilization of selenium and metals in typical permian soils of Enshi.

Enshi, China, is renowned as "Selenium(Se) Capital" where widely distributed soils derived from Permian parent rocks are notably rich in Se, as well as metals, particularly cadmium(Cd). However, the soil enrichment and crop uptake of Se and metals in these high-Se and high-Cd areas are not well understood. To propose the optimal crop planting plan to ensure the safety of agricultural products, we investigated the soils and corresponding typical crops (rice, tea, and maize). The results showed significant soil enrichment of elements, with average contents (mg/kg) as follows: Cr (185), Zn (126),

Valorisation of hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater in agriculture: effects on tobacco plants and rhizosphere microbiota.

Industrial wastewater obtained from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL-WW) of food wastes for biofuels production could represent a source of cr … urement of different biometric indices. Metagenomic results highlighted that, in the HTL-WW treated rhizosphere, the microbial populations shifted via their mechanisms of adaptation to the new environmental conditions, establishing a new balance among bacterial and fungal communities. Bacteria from the rhizosphere and tissues of As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata and their role in arsenic transformation.

Arsenic (As)-resistant bacteria are abundant in the rhizosphere and tissues of As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata. However, little is known about their roles in As transformation and As uptake in P. vittata. In this study, the impacts of P. vittata tissue extracts with or without surface sterilization on As transformation in solutions containing 100 μg L-1 AsIII or AsV were investigated. After 48 h incubation, the sterilized and unsterilized root extracts resulted in 45% and 73% oxidation of AsIII, indicating a role of both rhizobacteria and endobacteria. In contrast, AsV reduction was only fo…

Implications of rhizospheric heavy metals and nutrients for the growth of alfalfa in sludge amended soil.

Rhizospheric distribution of nutrients and heavy metals in sludge amended soil was investigated using the rhizobag technique to give an indication of the release of metals from wastewater sludge. DTPA-extractable Zn, Cd, Ni and Mn, and available P, K and NH4+-N in the rhizosphere were markedly depleted when soil was amended with sludge. There was no conspicuous depletion or accumulation of DTPA-extractable Cu in the rhizosphere when the soil was amended with sewage sludge but DTPA-extractable Fe accumulated in the rhizosphere when the soil was amended with increasing amounts of sludge. The pH …

Microbial degradation of trichloroethylene in the rhizosphere: potential application to biological remediation of waste sites.

The possibility that vegetation may be used to actively promote microbial restoration of chemically contaminated soils was tested by using rhizosphere and nonvegetated soils collected from a trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated field site. Biomass determinations, disappearance of TCE from the headspace of spiked soil slurries, and mineralization of [14C]TCE to 14CO2 all showed that microbial activity is greater in rhizosphere soils and that TCE degradation occurs faster in the rhizosphere than in the edaphosphere. Thus, vegetation may be an important variable in the biological restoration of s…

Rhizosphere functional microbiome remodeling by Streptomyces and jasmonic acid mitigates cadmium accumulation in rice.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination poses a serious threat to rice production and food safety because of its high mobility in soil and its accumulation in edible rice tissues. Although beneficial microorganisms and plant signaling regulators have individually shown potential for alleviating Cd stress, whether their combined application can reduce Cd accumulation by restructuring rhizosphere microbial functions remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of two Cd-tolerant, plant growth-promoting Streptomyces strains, alone or in combination with jasmonic acid (JA), on Cd stress, Cd a…

Potato foliar infection with Phytophthora infestans drives strong, cultivar-specific shifts in rhizosphere communities.

BACKGROUND: Potato is an important crop worldwide, yet its production is severely threatened by Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of late blight. Alternatives to the current control strategies are needed, as these rely heavily on environmentally harmful treatments. The recruitment of beneficial microbes by plants upon stress ("cry-for-help" mechanism) may represent an opportunity to find new biocontrol agents but this has not yet been reported for potato. The aim of this study was to analyse whether foliar late blight infection induces shifts in the phyllosphere, rhizosphere and soil ba…

Rhizosphere Microbiome-Mediated Drought Resilience in Cereals: Implications for Grain Nutrition, Yield, and Tolerance.

Drought-mediated declines in grain nutritional quality and cereal yield put global food security at risk, yet the rhizosphere microbiome provides an alternative solution for improving crop tolerance. Our review synthesised existing knowledge on how soil microbiomes, particularly arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), simultaneously regulate three interlinked pillars of crop performance (stress tolerance, grain nutrient uptake, and yield) under drought. Our in-depth analysis showed that such relationships were governed by synergies (improved root arc…

Rhizosphere Soil Fungal Community Patterns and Drivers in Chinese Fir Plantations Across Developmental Stages.

The composition, richness, and diversity of rhizosphere fungal communities play significant roles in plant development in Chinese fir plantations. Understanding their structure and assembly, along with their relationship to soil physicochemical properties and root traits, is essential for maximizing the benefits of fungal symbionts for Chinese fir trees. Hence, fungal communities in two soil layers (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm) at four plantation developmental stages were analyzed using internal transcribed spacer rRNA gene sequencing. Soil physicochemical properties and root traits were examined to …

Chiral herbicide imazethapy influences plant-soil feedback on nitrogen metabolism by shaping rhizosphere microorganisms.

Herbicides are known to affect the soil nitrogen cycle by shaping soil microorganisms. However, it is not clear how herbicides regulate diverse transformation processes of soil nitrogen cycling by altering rhizosphere microorganisms, subsequently influencing the feedback to plant nitrogen metabolism. Here, we investigated how imazethapyr (IM) enantiomers drive plant-soil feedback on nitrogen metabolism by altering the rhizosphere microorganisms. The results indicated that (R)- and (S)-IM significantly changed the composition and structure rhizosphere microbiome with enantioselectivity and func…

Functional characterization and molecular fingerprinting of potential phosphate solubilizing bacterial candidates from Shisham rhizosphere.

Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) are important role players in plant growth promotion. In the present study, we aimed to screen the functionally active phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) associated with Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. (Shisham) from different provenances. Screening for phosphate solubilization was done on Pikovskaya's agar, and 18 bacteria positive for the tri-calcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2 solubilization showing visible dissolution halo zones were identified. All 18 isolates showed zinc solubilization, indole acetic acid (IAA), siderophore, and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) production.
