Rickettsiae and their ecology in the Alpine region.

Two rickettsioses are known to be distributed in the Alpine Region, the ubiquitous Q fever and the so called tick-bite fever (fever boutonneuse) which is due to Rickettsia conorii. The latter is only temporarily seen and brought in via dogs by the dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus from Italy and southern France. Further, the presence of two apathogenic rickettsiae, R. slovaca (in Austria, Switzerland, Germany) and R. helvetica (Switzerland) has been determined. The present paper will discuss ecology, reservoirs, vectors, and abiotic and biotic environmental factors of these microorganisms. Fin…

Ecological questions concerning rickettsiae.

The past ten years were characterized by the appearance of several "new" transmissible spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsioses, e.g. Israeli, Japanese and Astrakhan fevers. The factors responsible for their establishment probably include the introduction of chemicals from industry, agriculture and the timber industry into natural habitats. Such factors may influence the pathogenicity of these rickettsiae. In this case, in addition to the human influence, the mechanism of the circulation of the agents under natural conditions of both abiotic (climate, etc.) and biotic (flora and fauna) componen…

A century of typhus, lice and Rickettsia.

At the beginning of the 20th century, it was discovered at the Pasteur Institute in Tunis that epidemic typhus is transmitted by the human body louse. The complete genome sequence of its causative agent, Rickettsia prowazekii, was determined at Uppsala University in Sweden at the end of the century. In this mini-review, we discuss insights gained from the genome sequence of this fascinating and deadly organism.

Rickettsia spp. in finnish ixodid ticks.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia spp. are intracellular, arthropod-borne bacteria pathogenic to humans and animals. The clinical manifestations of rickettsial infections range from mild to severe, but diagnosis is sometimes missed owing to mild symptoms or empirical antibiotic treatment for suspected tick-borne diseases. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Rickettsia spp. in ticks across Finland, explore possible regional variations, identify the infecting Rickettsia species, and assess rickettsial exposure of certain human patients. METHODS: We analysed 5101 ticks from 20 locations, collec…

Rickettsia mongolitimonae Encephalitis, Southern France, 2018.

We report a case of Rickettsia sibirica mongolitimonae infection, an emerging tickborne rickettsiosis, with associated encephalitis in a 66-year-old man. Diagnosis was rapidly confirmed by quantitative PCR obtained from an eschar swab sample. The patient was successfully treated with oral doxycycline.

Rickettsia prowazekii, ribosomes and slow growth.

Some bacteria, such as Rickettsia prowazekii, grow slowly, not with anticipation of a future feast, but because it is evolutionarily advantageous to do so. This creates apparent paradoxes for understanding their physiology and biochemistry. These rickettsiae have a ribosome concentration higher than expected if these ribosomes support translation at rates comparable to those in Escherichia coli.

Rickettsia conorii infection with fatal complication.

Rickettsial diseases (RD) are a group of endotheliotropic infectious diseases caused by different species of genera Rickettsia. RD are not an uncommon disease and may be misdiagnosed during the evaluation of acute febrile illness due to a lack of reliable serological marker and diagnostic culture methods. Clinical manifestation of RD varies from febrile illness with rashes and myalgia to fatal complications such as shock and respiratory failure. We describe a case of a young male who presented initially with acute febrile illness, followed by shock and respiratory failure, and unfortunately su…

Rickettsia mongolotimonae infection in South Africa.

We report the first laboratory-confirmed case of Rickettsia mongolotimonae infection in Africa. The patient sought treatment for an eschar on his toe; lymphangitis, severe headaches, and fever subsequently developed. After a regimen of doxycycline, symptoms rapidly resolved. R. mongolotimonae infection was diagnosed retrospectively by serologic tests and molecular-based detection of the organism in biopsy specimens of eschar material.
