In 109 adult diphtheria patients with different forms of the disease (toxic, subtoxic, localized) and carriers, the latter including 6 persons having had the localized form of diphtheria, 12 different subpopulations of T and B lymphocytes and neutrophils were studied by the methods of rosette formation with sheep, mouse and bovine red blood cells. The distribution of thymus-derived (T) and bone marrow-derived (B) lymphocytes in 100 patients with psoriasis were studied by the rosetting techniques. Depression of the number of T lymphocytes forming spontaneous rosettes with sheep erythrocytes (E rosettes) occurred in 66% of patients, whereas no difference in B lymphocytes bearing C3 receptor (EAC rosettes) was observed between psoriatics and normals. This paper describes some studies done on the human lymphocytes that bind to normal sheep red blood cells in a rosette formation. On the basis of human fetal studies and investigations of markers for B cells, it is demonstrated that rosette-forming cells are valid markers for T cells. These cells were looked at in various immunologic diseases. A modification of the basic technic, one that detects subpopulations of lymphocytes, was mainly used. Results correlate closely with the cellular immune status of the patient.

A rosette-forming glioneuronal tumour (RGNT) is a rare tumour with new information emerging. We review the literature and describe the second patient with a RGNT arising from the pineal gland. This is also the fifth report of a RGNT arising from outside the fourth ventricle. The prognosis of RGNT remains guarded, as long-term follow-up is not yet available for most patients reported. With only one of 35 patients having a documented recurrence at 10 years, the prognosis seems favourable with appropriate, but not necessarily total, surgical resection.

Levels of T and B lymphocytes have been assessed in 117 patients with probable loss of pregnancy during its various terms. The results compared with those obtained from 47 females with normally advancing pregnancies and 25 healthy nonpregnant women demonstrate that during the normal pregnancy, the number of T and B lymphocytes tends to decrease while that of lymphocytes is increasing. The signs of pregnancy interruption, particularly pronounced in threatened premature labor are found to be followed with a pronounced activation of the immunity T-system.

Two cases of the so-called undifferentiated retinoblastoma are demonstrated where typical rosettes were absent. However, cell groups resembling rosettes existed. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a tendency of the cells to arrange in circles or in garland-like formations. In one of the cases lymphocytes were found and in the other photoreceptor elements and tubuloreticular inclusions within the endothelial cells were seen.

Human alveolar macrophages (aM phi) isolated from lung lavages performed during bronchoscopy and after surgical removal of pulmonary lobes were analysed for Fc receptors for IgE (Fc epsilon R) and IgG (Fc gamma R) by rosette assays. Two methods of measuring total T cell percentages have been used to assess the effect of freezing and storage on the ability of lymphocytes to form rosettes in blood transfusion donors, laboratory staff, patients awaiting surgery for non-malignant conditions and 48 preoperative lung cancer patients.
