Reassessing rumination: Validity of the Day Reconstruction Method for Rumination (DRM-R) to assess episodes of rumination in daily life.

Rumination is a robust vulnerability to depression and potential treatment target. However, we know relatively little about rumination in daily life. This study tested the validity of a new approach for assessing daily episodes of rumination, the Day Reconstruction Method for Rumination (DRM-R). Participants (N = 127) who were either high or low in neuroticism completed baseline self-report measures (e.g., depression, trait rumination). Next, they completed the DRM-R by reconstructing the previous day into a series of "scenes," identifying discrete episodes of rumination, and responding to fol

The role of rumination and positive beliefs about rumination in eating pathology.

PURPOSE: General and eating disorder (ED)-specific ruminations have been identified as key factors that may contribute to eating pathology. Positive beliefs about rumination (e.g., "Ruminating helps me to prevent future mistakes") may impact this association. However, the effect of positive beliefs about rumination on the links between rumination and ED symptom severity has not been investigated. This study sought to clarify relations between rumination and ED symptom severity and to evaluate the potential moderating effect of positive beliefs about rumination on these associations. METHODS:

Maternal immunity and post-vaccination sero-monitoring in small ruminants for peste des petits ruminants eradication in North Shewa, Ethiopia.

Ethiopia aims to eradicate peste des petits ruminants (PPR) by 2027 through a risk-based vaccination strategy (RBVS); however, outbreaks continue to occur. This cross-sectional study (January–May 2024) evaluated RBVS performance by assessing flock- and maternal-level antibody immunity, providing field-based evidence to inform PPR control and eradication efforts. A total of 594 serum samples were collected using simple random sampling to assess flock (n = 508) and maternal (n = 86) antibody immunity. All samples were tested for PPRV antibodies using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent ass…

Occurrence of Coxiella burnetii and Chlamydiales species in abortions of domestic ruminants and in wild ruminants in Hungary, Central Europe.

Coxiella burnetii and certain members of the Chlamydiales order are zoonotic, intracellular, Gram-negative bacteria, with abortigenic potential in ruminants. These pathogens have a broad host range and worldwide geographical distribution. The current study aimed to reveal the importance of C. burnetii and Chlamydiales spp. in abortions in domestic ruminants and their occurrence in wild ruminants with real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays, histology, and immunohistochemical staining (IHC). From the 111 abortion cases of domestic ruminants examined, C. burnetii was detected in 33 pla…

Phosphorus Metabolism and Function in Ruminants: Current Knowledge.

Phosphorus (P) is a key macromineral essential for numerous physiological processes, including energy metabolism, skeletal mineralization, and cellular signaling. In dairy cattle, its homeostasis is tightly regulated by parathyroid hormone, calcitriol, and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). Phosphorus deficiency is common during the transition period and is associated with reduced milk yield, anemia, muscle weakness, and immunosuppression in severe or prolonged cases. This review summarizes the current understanding of phosphorus metabolism in ruminants, emphasizing differences from monogast…

Early pregnancy detection in ruminants: challenges and innovations.

Precise and early pregnancy detection is crucial for better breeding management and enhancing the overall production of ruminant livestock. Throughout the years, numerous methods have evolved for pregnancy detection in ruminants, each possessing specific advantages and limitations. This review thoroughly discusses both traditional and emergent diagnostic methods, emphasizing their principles, implementation, merits and challenges. Behavioral observation, rectal palpation and ultrasonography are the traditional approaches widely used because of their accessibility and direct detection of pregna…

Fascioliasis may promote tuberculous infectivity in small ruminants.

Fascioliasis and bovine tuberculosis (TB) are global impediments to livestock development. We investigated the co-infectivity of fascioliasis and TB in small ruminants at slaughter. A total of 84 goats and 16 sheep were investigated from different slaughter houses in Mymensingh city, Bangladesh from June 2019 to February 2020. Grossly, acute fascioliasis was characterized by hemorrhagic tracts in the liver and chronic fascioliasis with biliary cirrhosis and pipe-stem liver. Grossly, seven goats and two sheep were associated with the acute and sixty goats and seven sheep were associated with th…

Neosporosis, Toxoplasmosis, and Sarcocystosis in Ruminants: An Update.

Neospora caninum, Toxoplasma gondii, and Sarcocystis spp. are related Apicomplexan parasites that have 2 hosts in their life cycles. The definitive hosts excrete unsporulated (Neospora caninum, T gondii) or sporulated (Sarcocystis spp.) oocysts in their feces after ingesting tissue cysts from the tissues of ruminant intermediate hosts. These coccidians can cause abortion and neonatal mortality in ruminants. T gondii and Sarcocystis hominis (from cattle) are zoonotic. This article reviews information on the etiology, life cycle, diagnosis, control and prevention of these parasites and the disea…

Diagnosing bluetongue virus in domestic ruminants: current perspectives.

This review provides an overview of current and potential new diagnostic techniques against bluetongue virus (BTV), an Orbivirus transmitted by arthropods that affects ruminants. Bluetongue is a disease currently notifiable to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), causing great economic losses due to decreased trade associated with bluetongue outbreaks and high mortality and morbidity. BTV cross-reacts with many antigenically related viruses including viruses that causes African Horse sickness and epizootic haemorrhagic disease of deer. Therefore, reliable diagnostic approaches to de…

[Therapeutic options of obstructive urolithiasis in small ruminants].

The diagnosis of obstructive urolithiasis in small ruminants frequently results in a multitude of decisions that have to be made by the consulted practitioner. Factors that influence the decision for therapy (or euthanasia) are the type of the animal's use, economic aspects and specific options of the veterinarian practice as well as emotional aspects depending on the owners of small ruminants kept as companion animals. The present article aims to present the currently available methods of therapy to facilitate a decision by the practicing veterinarian based on the present state of the science…

Cerebral and non-cerebral coenurosis in small ruminants.

Cerebral coenurosis is caused by Coenurus cerebralis, the larval stage of Taenia multiceps. The metacestode causes severe lesions in the brain and spinal cord of the intermediate host, so-called "gid" or "stagger" disease. Whereas, the non-cerebral coenurosis caused by Coenurus gaigeri, the larval stage of Taenia gaigeri, particularly affects goats. The cyst form of the Taenia gaigeri is found in intramuscular and subcutaneous tissues. The difference in the sequence of mitochondrial genes of cox1 and nadI and also other variations reported for clinical, morphological and pathological aspects i

Pharmacological knowledge and sustainable anthelmintic therapy in ruminants.

Considering the increasing concern for the development of anthelmintic resistance, the use of pharmacology-based information is critical to design successful strategies for the future of parasite control in livestock. Integrated evaluation of the available knowledge on pharmacological features is required to optimize the activity and to achieve sustainable use of the existing anthelmintic drugs. The assessment of the drug disposition in the host and the comprehension of the mechanisms of drug influx/efflux/detoxification in different target helminths, has signified a relevant progress on the u

Regulatory and legal aspects of supplementing grazing ruminants.

The current legal and regulatory status of classes of feed additives is discussed, including food additives permitted in animal feed and drinking water, generally recognized as safe (GRAS) ingredients, and approved animal drugs. A brief description of these feed additive classes is given. Some nutritional and practical considerations are given for feed additives, and some special considerations are provided for free-choice feeding, medicated liquid feeds, sodium molybdate, and chromium compounds.

Oral fluid therapy in neonatal ruminants and swine.

Definitive recommendations regarding the best method to treat the diarrheic calf cannot be made at this time. The exact recommendation will probably depend on the situation. At the present time, I do not believe it is detrimental to withdraw milk from the diet for periods up to 24 to 36 hours, as long as the calf is in good condition and is returned to a full ration (maintenance plus) of milk within 3 to 5 days from the start of milk withdrawal. Milk withdrawal is most likely to be beneficial in those situations in which the calf is depressed and has lost its sucking reflex. Oral electrolyte s

[Food ingestion in ruminants: modalities and associated phenomena].

This paper synthesizes the literature on modalities of food intake in ruminants and their main associated phenomena. Firstly, circadian distribution of feeding and ruminating activities has been examined. Ruminants spend a large part of their time chewing. Their meals have been described in detail; changes in rates of intake, time spent eating, the effect of restricting the amount fed or the period of feed accessibility have been discussed. When food is distributed, the animals have a "long" meal. These meals have been analysed in relation to the type of animal and the feed offered. The other …
