Angiosarcoma of the face and scalp.

Angiosarcoma of the face and scalp developed in 12 patients. The patients were five women and seven men with an average age of 71 years. Initial features were solitary or multiple violaceous vascular nodules or plaques. The clinical course was complicated by ulceration, secondary infection, bleeding, anemia, infiltration into the underlying bones, tumor cachexia, and death. Metastases were not observed. Histologically, seemingly benign hemangiomatous capillary-like structures were found in some areas of the tumors, with richly cellular, solid sarcomatous proliferations in other areas. Early an…

The vascularized fascia of the scalp.

The fascial layers of the temporal and occipital regions of the scalp were examined in 11 fresh cadavers. In the temporal region, three independently vascularized layers were isolated, all of which could be elevated on a single superficial temporal artery, but separated to remain independently vascularized from specific branches of this parent trunk. In the occipital area, the occipital vessels could be dissected to yield a long pedicle for an independent, fascial territory that could be transposed locally or elevated as a free flap and that will, in all likelihood, carry vascularized occipita…

Misuse of scalp hypothermia.

Scalp hypothermia has been introduced to reduce the temporary epilation associated with certain cytotoxic drugs. This has improved compliance with drug delivery for some patients. It is currently not recommended for use in those tumors with a high prevalence of scalp metastasis, ie, leukemia and lymphoma. We have treated a patient for mycosis fungoides who demanded use of a "cooling cap" while undergoing consolidation chemotherapy. Cutaneous disease recurred on the scalp, with no other evidence of mycosis fungoides. Caution should be used in reducing drug delivery to the scalp while treating t…

Scalp Rosacea: Current Evidence.

Scalp rosacea, also known as red scalp disease (RSD), is an inflammatory dermatosis that remains underrecognized and frequently misdiagnosed because of its clinical overlap with other inflammatory scalp disorders and the relative nonspecificity of its findings. It is characterized by diffuse scalp erythema, dry scaling, vascular alterations, and inflammatory papules or pustules, often accompanied by pruritus or burning sensations. Despite being described several decades ago, scalp rosacea has only recently gained attention, and no standardized diagnostic criteria or therapeutic guidelines have…

Solitary papule over scalp.

Folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma (FSCH) is a rare cutaneous hamartoma characterized by follicular, sebaceous, and mesenchymal elements. Folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma is probably not as rare as previously thought and its inclusion in the differential diagnosis of asymptomatic skin colored papules or nodules is warranted, especially if it is present in the head and neck region.

Multifocal scalp hair loss.

Cutaneous metastases from internal cancer are relatively uncommon in clinical practice, but they are very important to recognize. Metastases of skin may be a herald sign in the diagnosis of internal malignancy. Scalp metastasis from breast carcinoma is reported but it is rare. We describe a 42-year-old woman who presented with three foci of alopecia on her scalp resembling alopecia areata. She was a known case of breast carcinoma 10 years prior. Radical mastectomy and total chemotherapy was done 8 years prior. An incision biopsy of an alopecic patch was done revealing metastases of breast carc…

Results of scalp cooling during anthracycline containing chemotherapy depend on scalp skin temperature.

OBJECTIVES: The success of scalp cooling in preventing or reducing chemotherapy induced alopecia (CIA) is highly variable between patients undergoing similar chemotherapy regimens. A decrease of the scalp skin temperature seems to be an important factor, but data on the optimum temperature reached by scalp cooling to prevent CIA are lacking. This study investigated the relation between scalp skin temperature and its efficacy to prevent CIA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this explorative study, scalp skin temperature was measured during scalp cooling in 62 breast cancer patients undergoing up to s…
