Osteoporosis: A possible aetiological factor in the development of Scheuermann's disease.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that spinal osteoporosis is an aetiological factor in the development of Scheuermann's disease in adolescents. Clinical and radiological data was collected on 12 individuals with Scheuermann's disease (SD). Lumbar spine bone mineral density (L2-4) was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Age and sex-matched adolescents were used as controls. The number of standard deviations from the mean of age and sex-matched controls were calculated. In regards to results, SD patients demonstrated high bone densities of between 1 and 1.5 standard

Short segmental kyphosis following fusion for Scheuermann's disease.

Six of 14 patients surgically treated for Scheuermann's disease developed a short segmental kyphosis adjacent to the fusion. In four patients, the original fusion had incorporated the end vertebrae of the curves. However, there was mild wedging of the end vertebra, which led to a loss of correction occurring at the junction between fused and unfused segments. These losses averaged 13 degrees (range, 6-29 degrees) at follow-up, ranging from 1 to 5.5 years (average, 2.8 years). The resultant short segmental kyphosis ranged in magnitude from 15 degrees to 34 degrees (average, 23 degrees). The kyp

[Radiculo-spinal discomfort and Scheuermann's disease. 12 cases].

Twelve cases of Scheuermann's disease associated with neurological disorders are reported. The relation between the two conditions can be established through herniated disc, kyphotic angulation or spinal cyst. A more interventionist attitude is justified by the progress and results of neuroradiological investigations and surgical techniques.

Scheuermann's disease with low localization. A problem of under-diagnosis.

Sequelae after Scheuermann's disease below the level of Th10/Th11 occur commonly and are presumed to produce low back pain in almost all cases. Despite this, the condition is frequently over-looked by both clinicians and radiologists. Of 55 rehabilitees with "low Scheuermann" this had only been diagnosed and acknowledged as a cause of pain in 20 prior to admission to the rehabilitation clinic. In 12 it had been diagnosed radiologically but not acknowledged as a cause of pain, while it had been completely over-looked in 23.

Juvenile kyphosis (Scheuermann's disease): radiography, histology, and pathogenesis.

In juvenile kyphosis (JK), the roentgenographic defects correspond to the sites of large translucent areas of the collagen-free tissue in the cartilaginous end plates of vertebral bodies. The extent of the roentgenographic lesions is proportional to the number and size of these translucent areas. The gradual transition of radiologic signs between the fully developed JK and the normal spine is paralleled by the decreasing intensity of these histologic change. This relationship can be traced from individual to individual, and within single vertebral columns. The growth zone is often narrow or ev

Comparison between two types of "Scheuermann disease-like people": thoracolumbar disc herniation patients and healthy volunteers with radiological signs of Scheuermann's disease.

BACKGROUND: Scheuermann's disease (SD) is a spinal disorder and includes both a classic form and an atypical form. Interestingly, its existence among the general population as well as the disc disease patients is common. One of our previous studies showed that about 18% of the hospital staff members meet the SD criteria. On the other hand, another study has demonstrated that 95.2% of the symptomatic thoracolumbar disc herniation (STLDH) patients meet the SD criteria, which suggests that STLDH is very likely a special form of SD. The purpose of this study was to discriminate the factors contrib

[Scheuermann disease as predisposition of later spinal disease and its effect on expert assessment in occupational disease examinations].

The Scheuermanns disease is an illness of which the fluoride stage is described as a disorder in growth of the vertebral-intervertebral disk borderline. This stage of the illness ends with the finish of bone growth. Depending on the advanced alterations of the spinal column segments or of the statics of the spinal column up to that point, in later stages of life there will be a higher rate of diskopathies of the lumbar vertebrae and later on of the cervical vertebrae where it often causes arthrosis of the swivel joints. I.e. Morbus Scheuermann is a predisposition for the beginning of diskopath

Classical Scheuermann disease in male monozygotic twins: further support for the genetic etiology hypothesis.

STUDY DESIGN: Classic cases of Scheuermann disease in male monozygotic twins are reported. OBJECTIVES: To report classic cases of Scheuermann disease or Scheuermann kyphosis in male monozygotic twins, and to discuss the previous two cases of classic Scheuermann disease in monozygotic twins and the genetic etiology theory of Scheuermann kyphosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The etiology of Scheuermann disease remains unclear. Both genetic and mechanical factors or a combination of the two have been postulated to explain Scheuermann disease. The genetic etiology hypothesis has been explained b…

Posterior-only versus combined anterior/posterior fusion in Scheuermann disease: a large retrospective study.

PURPOSE: The literature shows controversies concerning surgical treatment of Scheuermann's kyphosis between posterior-only fixation and combined anterior/posterior fusion. The aim of this study is to compare the clinical and radiological results and the rate of complications between these two techniques. METHODS: We performed a multicentric retrospective review of 131 patients who underwent primary fusion for Scheuermann's kyphosis divided into two groups: 67 patients operated via posterior approach only and 64 operated via combined anterior/posterior approach. Classical clinical, surgical an

Untreated Scheuermann's disease: a 37-year follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: There are only a few follow-up studies of untreated Scheuermann's disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between vertebral changes, back pain, and disability in patients with untreated Scheuermann's disease after a 37-year follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty patients responded to a postal questionnaire concerning back pain and disability and 49 of them had classic Scheuermann's disease. Degree of kyphosis, lordosis, scoliosis, the number of affected vertebrae, and mean and maximum wedge angles were measured from radiographs. Back pain and disabil

[Treatment of Scheuermann's disease with the active-passive Gschwend erection corset].

In a retrospective study of 31 patients we give a report about the experience with the Geschwend-brace in the therapy of acute M. Scheuermann. The indication for therapy with this brace was given if there was no possibility to stop the progression of the kyphosis by intensive physiotherapy. During the whole time of therapy the brace could not be removed by the patients. Within a follow-up of 24 month in average after the end of brace treatment, we saw a permanent correction of kyphosis of 18 degrees in 22 patients (71%). In 2 patients there was no change of kyphosis and in 7 patients (22%) we

Scoliosis screening in West Germany and its pitfalls with Scheuermann's disease.

The problems of scoliosis screening in the Federal Republic of Germany are outlined. The main pitfall with regard to the high numbers of very mild scolioses seems to be the disregard of mild forms in connection with Scheuermann's disease, in spite of their good prognosis. This group should be clearly separated, by means of a lateral X-ray, from beginning idiopathic adolescent scoliosis, with its doubtful prognosis. Moreover, it is necessary to exclude all curves below 10 degrees shown on the a.p. standing X-ray, not forgetting the fact that a seemingly mild scoliosis might be due in part to mi
