The results of second-look laparoscopy were compared with subjective symptomatology and findings at pelvic exploration in 36 patients who had received conservative treatment for endometriosis. In the 14 patients given pharmacologic treatment, second-look laparoscopy demonstrated active endometriosis in 57.1%, whereas pelvic pain was present in 64.3% and gynecologic examination was positive in 28.6%. In the 22 patients who underwent surgery, active endometriosis was detected by second-look laparoscopy in 31.8%, whereas 40.9% reported pelvic pain and pelvic examination was positive in 31.8%. Thu

We studied 35 ears of 34 patients with congenital cholesteatoma who were operated between June 1992 and May 2003, focusing on the localization and progression of congenital cholesteatoma. Patients were 2 to 55 years of age. Congenital cholesteatoma was diagnosed based on two intraoperative findings: 1) no continuity between the tympanic membrane and cholesteatoma, 2) no presence of perforation, retraction, or granulation of the tympanic membrane. All patients had closed-type cholesteatoma, and none formed open-type cholesteatoma, which grows as a flat sheet of epidermis. The primary site of co

PURPOSE: To reexamine the use of adjuvant radiotherapy in optimally debulked patients.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between January 1985 and April 1998, 60 patients were treated with adjuvant whole abdominal radiotherapy (A-WART). The stage distribution was Stage IC in 17 patients, Stage II in 9, and Stage III in 34. The grade distribution was Grade 1 in 9 patients, Grade 2 in 27, and Grade 3 in 24; thus, 60% of the patients had Stage III disease and 40% had Grade 3 tumors. After surgery, no residuum was left in 42 (70%), <or=2 cm in 13 (22%), and >2 cm in 5 (8%) of 60 patients. Of the 60 patients,

Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) permits the application of a single large radiation dose to a malignant mass at the time of surgery sparing adjacent normal tissue from irradiation. Since 1996 we have used IORT to treat 13 children with neuroblastoma, stage 3 - 4. In all cases the tumour was not radically resectable at the first operation. Ultrasound, CT and MRI were performed and patients were treated with chemotherapy according to the NB90 protocol. The second-look operation was performed in the IORT operating room where the tumour was resected as completely as possible, while keeping the

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to verify the utility of second-look ultrasound (US) using real-time virtual sonography (RVS), a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/US fusion technique, in identifying MRI-detected breast lesions with non-mass enhancement (NME).
METHODS: Consecutive patients who had one or more NME lesions detected by MRI yet occult on the subsequent second-look US in conventional B (cB)-mode imaging were enrolled in the study between June 2015 and April 2020. Supine MRI of the lesions was performed and, using its data, second-look US using RVS was performed.
RESULTS: Twenty

PURPOSE: To investigate meniscal healing results and clinical outcomes based on healing status after root repair using modified Mason-Allen stitches with a locking mechanism from second-look arthroscopy in medial meniscal posterior root tears.
METHODS: Among patients who underwent root repair between 2018 and 2022, those who consented to undergo second-look arthroscopy 1 year after surgery were recruited. The healing condition of the repaired meniscus was evaluated based on (1) morphologic continuity between the bone bed and meniscus (intact vs non-intact) and (2) meniscal laxity at the bony

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) after ACL rupture improves the instability of the knee joint and decreases mechanical stress to the meniscus and articular cartilage. However, there are reports that post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is observed over time following ACLR. In this study, we assessed changes in cartilage lesions by arthroscopic findings following anatomical double-bundle ACLR and at post-operative second-look arthroscopy about 14 months later. We retrospectively evaluated 37 knees in cases with patients <40 years of age who had undergone an anatomical doub

Arthroscopic repair of type II superior labral tears using suture anchors has resulted in a good to excellent outcome in most cases. In throwing athletes, however, the results have not been as consistent. Although it has not been reported in the literature, it is also possible that, in a very small number of throwers, the limited space in the glenohumeral joint combined with the bulky knots used to secure the labrum to the anchor may be a cause of discomfort. In addition, the superior labrum is meniscoid in appearance, which traditional SLAP repair techniques do not recreate. We describe here

PURPOSE: To examine the healing status of meniscal repair performed concomitantly with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with our current indication and surgical procedure based on second-look arthroscopic results. Additionally, the significance of the demographic and clinical factors that can potentially influence the healing rate was statistically assessed.
METHODS: Between January 2009 and January 2015, second-look was performed for patients who opted to have tibial screw removal and agreed to have concomitant arthroscopy. The healing status of the repaired meniscus was class

BACKGROUND: Transtibial pullout repair of a medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) is a commonly used procedure, and several techniques have been reported. We hypothesised that pull-out repairs using two simple stitches (TSS) would have similar postoperative outcomes as those using the modified Mason-Allen suture with FasT-Fix (F-MMA). We aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes of these techniques, including the meniscal healing status and osteoarthritic change.
METHODS: The data of 68 patients who underwent transtibial pull-out repair were retrospectively investigated. The patients w
