The impact of self-efficacy on nonoperative treatment of atraumatic shoulder pain.

CONTEXT: Atraumatic shoulder pain is frequently encountered in primary care and surgical clinics. With increased recognition of the biopsychosocial model, there has been an increased emphasis on identifying patient factors associated with less effective coping strategies such as pain catastrophizing. It remains uncertain what impact self-efficacy has on the response to nonoperative treatment of shoulder pain. OBJECTIVES: Our purpose is to determine the influence of patient coping strategies (self-efficacy) on the outcome of nonoperative treatment of atraumatic shoulder pain. We hypothesize th

Efficacy of a Voluntary Self-exclusion Reinstatement Tutorial for Problem Gamblers.

Voluntary self-exclusion programs allow gamblers to voluntarily be denied access to gambling venues for an agreed upon period. Many people who self-exclude decide to return to gambling venues after the exclusion period has ended, however people who reinstate may be at risk for the recurrence of gambling problems. This study was designed to determine the efficacy of a tutorial created with the intent of reducing the risk of harm to those who reinstate. People who wished to be reinstated were asked to complete a survey on gambling related issues and then watch the tutorial video. An online video

Factors associated with disease self-efficacy in individuals aging with a disability.

Self-management of a disability consists of treatment adherence, obtaining information about the disease and treatment options, caring for oneself, participating in decisions, and maintaining social relationships and emotional balance. Understanding and measuring an individual's beliefs about their ability to successfully self-manage and live well with a disability allows researchers and clinicians to better target interventions aimed at increasing disability management self-efficacy (DMSE). The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between demographic and clinical indicators,

Psychometric Properties of the Korean Version of the Infertility Self-Efficacy Scale.

PURPOSE: The Infertility Self-Efficacy scale (ISE) is an instrument used to identify infertility-related self-efficacy. The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the ISE developed by Cousineau et al. in 2006. METHODS: The translated instrument was pilot-tested and administered to 314 women and men with a diagnosis of infertility. For estimating reliability, test-retest and the internal consistency reliability coefficients were calculated. Validity was evaluated through content validity, concurrent validity, and construct validity with explor

Safety and Efficacy of Self-Expanding TAVR in Patients With Aortoventricular Angulation.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between aortoventricular (AoV) angulation on clinical outcomes after self-expanding transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in patients with severe aortic stenosis who were deemed suboptimal for surgery. BACKGROUND: Multidetector computed tomographic (MDCT) imaging of the aortovalvular complex has become a prerequisite for case planning with self-expanding TAVR. The effect of aortic angulation, an index of an unfolded or "horizontal" aorta, on procedural outcome after self-expanding TAVR is not known. METHODS: The clin

Self-efficacy mediates the effect of depression on smoking susceptibility in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Research indicates that negative affect and/or depression is associated with increased prevalence for smoking and higher levels of nicotine dependence in adults and adolescents. A previous study with adult smokers attempting to quit indicated that low levels of self-efficacy partially mediated depression's adverse effect on posttreatment cessation. METHOD: The current study attempted to test self-efficacy as a potential mediator between depressive symptoms and smoking susceptibility in adolescents. One thousand and ninety-three nonsmoking high-school students who were part of a

The efficacy of a brief internet-based self-help intervention for the bereaved.

Research so far has shown little evidence that written disclosure facilitates recovery from bereavement. There are good reasons to assume that written disclosure may only benefit those bereaved who are at risk for developing problems or who are experiencing significant psychological problems as a result of their loss, and only when appropriate writing instructions are used. Drawing on previous work in the area of post-traumatic stress, a writing intervention was designed to test these assumptions. Bereaved individuals, who were still significantly distressed by their loss, were randomly assign

The development of a Peer Aggression Coping Self-Efficacy Scale for adolescents.

This study presents findings regarding the reliability and validity of a newly developed measure designed to assess children's self-efficacy for coping with peer aggression. The sample consisted of 2,161 participants (1,071 females and 1,090 males, who ranged in age from 10 to 15 years; 63% White, 17% Middle-Eastern, 10% Asian, and 10% from other ethnic groups). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported the four conceptualized coping self-efficacy domains: self-efficacy for proactive behaviour, self-efficacy for avoiding aggressive behaviour, self-efficacy for avoiding self-blame,

Coping with oral surgery by self-efficacy enhancement and perceptions of control.

Recent work has suggested that patients' coping could be improved in stressful dental situations if perceptions of self-efficacy and control could be enhanced. To test this hypothesis, 70 first-time third-molar extraction patients were randomly assigned to one of four surgery preparation conditions: standard preparation, oral premedication, relaxation, and a relaxation+efficacy-enhancing feed-back condition in which subjects were given false galvanic skin response (GSR) biofeedback leading them to believe that they were highly skilled at relaxing. Analyses indicated that: (1) all treatments we

Development and validation of a condom self-efficacy scale for college students.

This study proposed to develop and validate a scale for the college population that measures self-efficacy in using condoms. The Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale (CUSES) was derived from several sources and consisted of 28 items describing an individual's feelings of confidence about being able to purchase condoms, put them on and take them off, and negotiate their use with a new sexual partner. This scale was administered to a sample of 768 college students. It was found to possess adequate reliability (Cronbach's alpha = .91; test-retest correlation = .81) and correlated well with the Attitude

AIlessphobia, AI-supported self-regulated learning, and academic self-efficacy in nursing students: A structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly integrated into higher education and influence students' learning behaviors. Although AI tools can support learning processes, excessive reliance on them may lead to AIlessphobia, defined as anxiety about completing academic tasks without AI support. Understanding how this emerging psychological factor relates to students' self-regulated learning and academic self-efficacy is particularly important in nursing education. AIM: This study aimed to examine the relationships between AIlessphobia, AI-enhanced self-regulated lear

The relationship among self-efficacy, negative self-referent cognitions, and social anxiety in children: a multiple mediator model.

Evidence suggests that general self-efficacy, an individual's beliefs about his global abilities, and social self-efficacy, an individual's beliefs in his ability to navigate social situations, are strongly connected to levels of social anxiety. Negative self-statements, also known as negative self-referent cognitions, have also been linked with levels of social anxiety. Although self-efficacy and negative self-statements have been shown to be important variables in the phenomenology and maintenance of social anxiety in children, they have yet to be examined in conjunction with one another.
