Examining the degree of pain reduction using a multielement exercise model with a conventional training shoe versus an ultraflexible training shoe for treating plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is a common injury to the plantar aponeurosis, manifesting as pain surrounding its proximal insertion at the medial calcan … h >or= 6-month history of painful heel pain were recruited and randomly assigned to wear 1 of the 2 shoes. All subjects completed the same exercise protocol. A visual analogue scale item tracked peak pain in the preceding 24 hours taken at baseline, 6- and 12-week points, and at the 6-month follow-up. Twenty-one subjects completed the program (9 FREE; 1 …

Shoe heel-toe drop affects running economy.

To run faster, distance runners need shoes that reduce their metabolic energy expenditure. Here, we studied how shoe heel-toe drop affects metabolic energy expenditure during running. To do so, we studied 20 runners as they ran at 3.5 m/s in custom footwear that varied in heel-toe drop: 0, 10, 20, and 30 mm. Shoe model and mass were fixed. Overall, increasing shoe heel-toe drop increased net metabolic power during running ([Formula: see text] = 0.12, P = 0.016); where changing from a 20 to 0 mm heel-toe drop reduced net metabolic power by 1.6%. Higher heel-toe drop decreased stance average ver…

If the Shoe Fits, Wear It? Working Through the Cinderella Complex.

The premise of Colette Dowling's The Cinderella Complex was a scalding one when it was first published in 1981, but the book struck a deep chord and became an instant bestseller. Nowadays the "Cinderella Complex" might seem like a dated concept, but it remains strikingly relevant for two of my patients. Both hold deeply entrenched Cinderella fantasies that arose from having served as narcissistic extensions. Through exploring and reconsidering various versions of the fairytale that parallel my patients' own histories, I attempt to work through their deep sense of emotional impoverishment, from

Design Modifications in Distal Shoe Therapy: A Scoping Review.

This review aims to present updated evidence on different modifications of distal shoe space maintainers, which will aid in optimizing patient outcomes and standardizing procedures. Distal shoe space maintainer therapy is needed to prevent space loss and guide the eruption of the permanent first molar when the primary second molar is lost prematurely before the eruption of the permanent first molar. Studies assessing the efficacy of different distal shoe space maintainer adjustments in children with mixed dentition were found through a thorough search of electronic databases. Data extraction a

Effectiveness of Shoe Rotation in Managing Plantar Fasciitis in Patients.

Background/Objectives: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a common condition that causes heel pain. While various conservative treatment modalities f … ions: ShR, FO, and PT contributed to pain reduction and functional improvement, and alternating the shoes alleviated PF pain. These results suggest a new approach to managing PF and serve as a basis for providing convenient treatment for patients with PF.

The stiff plate location into the shoe influences the running biomechanics.

The changes in running biomechanics induced by an increased longitudinal bending stiffness (stiff plates added into the shoes) have been well investigated, but little is known concerning the effects of the stiff plate location into the shoe on running biomechanics. Fourteen male recreational runners ran at two participant-specific running speeds (3.28 ± 0.28 m/s and 4.01 ± 0.27 m/s) with two shoe conditions where a stiff plate was added either in high (under the insole) or low location (between the midsole and outsole). Ground reaction forces, lower limb joint angles, net joint torques and wor…

Effects of flexible and rigid rocker profiles on in-shoe pressure.

Rocker profiles are commonly used in the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers. Rockers are mostly stiffened to restrict toe plantarflexion to … regions of the foot. Generalized estimate equation was used to analyse the effect of the different shoes on the outcome measures for these regions. Compared to the control shoe a significant increase of PP and FTI was found at the first toe for both rigid rockers and the flexible rocker with the apex positioned at 60%, while MMP was significantly incre …

Modified distal shoe appliance--fabrication and clinical performance.

When the primary second molar is prematurely lost, mesial movement and migration of the permanent first molar often occurs. This is one of the most difficult problems of the developing dentition confronted by pediatric dentists. Use of a space maintainer that will guide the permanent first molar into its normal position is indicated. In cases with bilateral premature loss of primary molars, the conventional design of distal shoe poses a variety of problems and, therefore, necessitates a customized design for the eruption guidance of permanent first molars. The purpose of this case report is to

Effect of heel height on in-shoe localized triaxial stresses.

Abnormal and excessive plantar pressure and shear are potential risk factors for high-heeled related foot problems, such as forefoot pain, hallux valgus deformity and calluses. Plantar shear stresses could be of particular importance with an inclined supporting surface of high-heeled shoe. This study aimed to investigate the contact pressures and shear stresses simultaneously between plantar foot and high-heeled shoe over five major weightbearing regions: hallux, heel, first, second and fourth metatarsal heads, using in-shoe triaxial force transducers. During both standing and walking, peak pr

A case of contact dermatitis to dimethylfumarate in shoes identified in Italy.

The present paper describes a case of shoe contact dermatitis from DMF identified by the Poison Control Centre of Milan (PCCM), Italy, in 2009. A 35 year old woman was affected by irritant reactions while wearing shoes contaminated with DMF. Exposure to these shoes was limited to a 8 hour period and was not repeated. In the following days the patient suffered feet blistering and swelling limited to the area in contact with shoe vamp. Topical application of cortisone did not prevent development of bullous eczema. After 20 days from exposure, the lesions were healed but the skin remained red, dr…

Active epidemiological surveillance of musculoskeletal disorders in a shoe factory.

AIMS: (1) To evaluate an active method of surveillance of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). (2) To compare different criteria for deciding whether or not a work situation could be considered at high risk of MSDs in a large, modern shoe factory. METHODS: A total of 253 blue collar workers were interviewed and examined by the same physician in 1996; 191 of them were re-examined in 1997. Risk factors of MSDs were assessed for each worker by standardised job site work analysis. Prevalence and incidence rates of carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff syndrome, and tension neck syndrome were calculat

Carbon plates in running shoes biomechanics: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Carbon-plated running shoes (CPS) combine compliant foams with embedded carbon-fiber plates to increase longitudinal bending stiffness and potentially improve running economy. However, whether CPS systematically alter running biomechanics compared with non-carbon-plated shoes (NCPS) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the biomechanical effects of CPS in healthy adults. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of crossover trials comparing CPS vs. NCPS was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO CRD420251058609). Searches were performed in MEDLINE, Scopus, LIL…

Technologically advanced running shoes reduce biomechanical factors of running related injury risk.

Recent footwear technology has led to the development of technologically advanced running shoes (TARS), which improve running performance. However, the effect of TARS on biomechanical risk factor remains unclear. This study compares the effects of TARS with those of conventional cushioned shoes (CON) and minimalist shoes (MIN) on running biomechanics and biomechanical risk factors. We recruited 15 recreational runners, measured their ventilation threshold speeds and habitual strike angles, collected kinematic data and ground reaction forces across shoe conditions, and estimated joint reaction …

Walking in high-heel shoes induces redistribution of joint power and work.

Walking in high-heel shoes (HHS) decreases the push-off power and little research has examined the specific muscle groups that compensate for it. The purpose was to examine the effects of walking in HHS compared to barefoot on lower extremity net joint work and power. Fourteen young women walked in HHS and barefoot at a fixed speed of 1.3 m·s-1. Marker position and ground reaction force data were synchronously measured at 100 and 1000 Hz, respectively. Peak power and joint work variables were computed over the power phases of the gait cycle using an inverse dynamic approach. When walking in HH…
