CLINICAL INTRODUCTION: A 74-year-old woman was brought to the ski clinic shortly after a fall on her left shoulder while skiing. She did not remember the exact fall mechanism. She felt a popping sensation in her left shoulder and was unable to move her left arm due to severe pain. Her medical and social histories were unremarkable. On physical examination, she had a deformity in her left shoulder (figure 1). Her neurovascular examination was intact.emermed;34/11/740/F1F1F1Figure 1Photograph of the left shoulder on arrival showing an anterior 'dimple'.

Although shoulder injury patterns vary by sport and position, overhead sports, such as baseball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball, share a common dependence on the integrity of the kinetic chain. Disruption of this critical mechanism predisposes to injury and deserves attention as the most important of the biomechanical principles required to help evaluate and manage problems of the athlete's shoulder.

The shoulder is the most movable and the most unstable joint in a human body. The glenohumeral joint is particularly vulnerable because overhead activities put tremendous stress on its static stabilizers (ligamentous labral complex) and the dynamic stabilizers (rotator cuff muscles). Overhead activities may stretch or injure the static stabilizers. Minor aberrations in mechanisms controlling stability have a significant and cumulative effect on the shoulder biomechanics, and increase the risk of injury. Impingement syndrome and glenohumeral instability are predominant injuries affecting the sh

The shoulder joint of the spinal cord injured patient is the primary joint used for transfer and wheelchair propulsion. In addition to ordinary use, the shoulder is subject to overuse injury with resultant functional impairment. Frequent overuse injuries of the shoulder include subdeltoid bursitis, bicipital tendonitis, rotator cuff tear and secondary degenerative arthritis. Neuroarthropathy of the shoulder, an overuse injury of an insensate shoulder girdle, has been rarely described in the literature. The case presented is that of an active 47 year old, right hand dominant, C7 complete quadri

Injuries of the proximal humerus in infants are often missed or misinterpreted because the humeral epiphysis is frequently nonossified. Ultrasonography enables direct visualization of the proximal humeral epiphysis, metaphysis, joint space, and relationship of the epiphysis with the glenoid cavity. We describe an infant with unexplained agitation and ventilatory difficulty related to a fracture of the proximal right humerus that was not appreciable on plain film radiographs. Sonographic imaging of the shoulder, with use of the opposite side for comparison, clearly demonstrated a Salter I proxi

INTRODUCTION: Competitive swimming has grown substantially worldwide, bringing increased attention to the prevalence of overuse injuries among athletes. One of the most common conditions, swimmer's shoulder, is closely associated with orthopedic pathologies including rotator cuff tendinopathy, labral injury, and scapular dyskinesis, resulting from the repetitive overhead motion required in swimming. Despite growing clinical and research interest in these injuries, the global landscape and evolution of scientific research on swimming-related shoulder injuries have not yet been investigated.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is frequently obtained to assess for pathology in the setting of shoulder pain and dysfunction. MRI of the shoulder provides diagnostic information that helps optimize patient management and surgical planning. Both general and subspecialized orthopaedic surgeons routinely order and review shoulder MRIs in practice. Therefore, familiarity with the MRI appearance of common shoulder pathologies is important. This document reviews the most common shoulder pathologies using a standardized MRI interpretative approach. Instructional videos demonstrating a musculoskele

BACKGROUND: Youth around the globe place their shoulders at risk for injury when participating in sports. Shoulder injuries may vary in severity, produce the potential for time-loss from sport, and result in functional disability. We sought to explore sport-related shoulder injuries in youth by identifying injury rates, risk factors, injury mechanisms, and injury prevention strategies.
METHODS: All relevant full-text articles were identified by searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Sport Discus, and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Registry. No date restrictions were used. All full-text studies re

The management of penetrating skeletal extremity trauma is a clinical challenge even for experienced surgeons. While the treatment of associated vascular injuries should be prioritized, there is still a lack of evidence regarding the management of foreign bodies in case of bone fractures or neurological injuries. Here we present a case of impalement of the right proximal humerus with a construction steel rod. The 54-year-old man was successfully treated without vascular, neurological, and thoracic sequelae. A review of the current literature about the most appropriate extrication sequences and

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injuries associated with reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) are rarely reported and are often dismissed as neuropraxias, particularly in the setting of perioperative nerve blocks. The purpose of this study was to evaluate nerve injuries following rTSA to determine if there is a pattern of injury and to evaluate outcomes of patients who sustain an intraoperative nerve injury.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed identifying patients who underwent rTSA and had a concomitant major nerve injury who were referred to a multidisciplinary peripheral nerve

BACKGROUND: The external rotation and abduction of shoulder are considered one of the priorities of reconstruction in brachial plexus injury. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional results and complications of shoulder arthrodesis in patients with brachial plexus injury to better comprehend the benefits of this procedure.
METHODS: Between 2015 and 2019, 15 shoulder arthrodesis were performed in patients with long-standing brachial plexus injury. The main indication for arthrodesis was absent or poor recovery of shoulder abduction and external rotation. Patients presented differe

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this review article is to help medical personnel of all levels and backgrounds identify and appropriately manage on-field acute shoulder and elbow injuries in the baseball athlete. This article discusses the most common acute shoulder and elbow injuries in baseball players along with recommendations for appropriate on-field management.
RECENT FINDINGS: Shoulder and elbow injuries are very common in baseball players and can be problematic because of the unique demands placed on the shoulder and elbow during the throwing and swinging motions. While many shoulder a

BACKGROUND: The popularity of bicycle riding for recreation, exercise and transportation has grown enormously in recent years, which has led to an increased incidence of bicycle-related injuries. While these injuries involve mainly the musculoskeletal system, data on shoulder-specific injuries incurred while bike riding are lacking. Classifying these shoulder injuries may provide insight and assistance in the creation and implementation of effective protective gear and measures.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the types and mechanisms of shoulder injuries among cyclists.
METHODS: This study retro

PURPOSE: Anterior shoulder dislocation can be associated with many lesions such as Bankart lesions, rotator cuff tears (RCT), Hill-Sachs lesions or greater tuberosity fractures. It has been documented that early management of the associated injury affords better recovery of shoulder function. The aim of this study was to highlight the incidence of associated injuries after anterior shoulder dislocation.
METHODS: A total of 240 patients with traumatic anterior glenohumeral dislocations were subjected to complete history taking, neurovascular assessment and pre-reduction plain X-ray. An X-ray w
