Application Value of Magnetic Resonance Arthrography of the Shoulder in Nursing and Diagnosis of Patients with Shoulder Joint Injury.

Supraspinatus tendon injury is a common clinical shoulder joint disease and is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain and dysfunction. Supraspinatus tendon injury will lead to articular cartilage injury and degeneration, then cause joint disease, seriously affect the quality of life of patients, and bring a huge burden to the family and society. This paper mainly studies and evaluates the application value of special signs of shoulder joint and indirect MR imaging in the diagnosis of supraspinatus tendon injury. Through a series of special examinations for the diagnosis of supraspinatu…

Muscle and joint function in the rotator cuff deficient shoulder.

Full-thickness rotator cuff tears can lead to poor coaptation of the humeral head to the glenoid, disrupting muscle forces required for glenohumeral joint stability, ultimately leading to joint subluxation. The aim of this study was to evaluate muscle forces and glenohumeral joint translations during elevation in the presence of isolated and combined full-thickness rotator cuff tears. Eight fresh-frozen upper limbs were mounted to a computer-controlled testing apparatus that simulated joint motion by simulated muscle force application. Scapular-plane abduction was performed, and glenohumeral j

Exercises with the StretchPole improve shoulder joint range of motion.

The 'StretchPole' foam roller product is mainly used to loosen muscle groups and joints in the deeper layers of the body that are normally inaccessible to the human hand, and to realign the skeletal structure by lying on the pole and performing exercises. It is also used to strengthen the core, which plays an important role in postural maintenance and stability. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the 'Solacon' exercise routine using a StretchPole on shoulder joint range of motion. Forty healthy participants performed Solacon exercises using a StretchPole. The specific me…

Osteomyelitis of the scapula with secondary septic arthritis of the shoulder joint.

We report a delayed diagnosis of osteomyelitis of the scapula involving the inferior angle and extending to the glenoid, with secondary septic arthritis of the glenohumeral joint in a 7-month-old female infant. The patient was treated with arthrotomy of the shoulder joint, anterior drainage of pus and intravenous antibiotics. The diagnosis was delayed as the patient was found to have bilateral lung abscess and other foci of infection, for which she was treated in the neonatal intensive care unit, with all the medical efforts directed towards saving her life. The diagnosis of septic shoulder ar…

[Reconstruction of the shoulder joint function in the older obstetrical palsy].

OBJECTIVE: To study the reconstructional method and effect of shoulder joint function in the older obstetrical palsy with medial rotation contracture deformity. METHODS: From April 1996 to July 1999, 7 patients of older obstetrical palsy were adopted in this study. Among them, there were 5 males and 2 females, aged from 13 to 21 years old. No previous operation history and the main deformity was medial rotation contracture of shoulder. During operation, these patients were treated with "Z"-shape elongation of the tendon of subscapular muscle, transfer of the tendons of latissimus dorsi and te…

Imaging of degenerative and posttraumatic disease in the shoulder joint with ultrasound.

This article reviews the examination technique of shoulder ultrasound, normal and abnormal ultrasound findings in acute (posttraumatic) and chronic (degenerative) lesions. Moreover, it reviews the effectiveness of ultrasound in relation to magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Most authors report that full-thickness tears of the supraspinatus can reliably be diagnosed by ultrasound. However, the simple diagnosis of a full-thickness rotator cuff tear is no longer sufficient for surgical management. The precise localization and size of rotator cuff tears as well as the extent of muscle degeneration i

[Critical considerations in arthroscopic stabilization of the unstable shoulder joint].

There is increasing interest in arthroscopic techniques for stabilisation of unstable glenohumeral joints. Consequently, plenty of new surgical techniques are developed over the last few years. However, most of the authors just report on short term results. In the presented paper, the current indications for surgical treatment in shoulder instability are discussed. The different arthroscopic techniques are described in detail. The advantages and disadvantages in relation to the conventional open Bankart-operation are presented, and the technique related risks are discussed in detail. Consideri

Function of the glenohumeral ligaments in active stabilisation of the shoulder joint.

UNLABELLED: The joint capsules and the glenohumeral ligaments of 12 human shoulder specimens were histologically investigated by light microscopy. Serial sections of 15 microns thickness were cut. The tissue was stained following the haematoxylin-eosin and van Giesson techniques. For specific identification of neural elements we made use of a special silver impregnation technique, described by Novotny, for staining axons in peripheral nerves. Axons of different diameters ranging from 0.2 microns to 70 microns were discovered within the ligaments. Close to the humeral site we found small nerves

[The value of dynamic examination methods in instability of the shoulder joint].

We prospectively examined 25 patients with shoulder instability by clinical examination and by fluoroscopic and sonographic imaging. 14 patients were classified as recurrent, posttraumatic instabilities, 12 of these anterior and two posterior. Clinical examination revealed the direction of instability in 5 patients, fluoroscopy in 5 and sonography in 3 patients. 11 patients had non-traumatic recurrent instabilities. Of these, clinical examination and fluoroscopy demonstrated identical directions of laxity in 8. Sonography concurred with the other techniques in only three cases. We recommend ma

[Possibilities for using sonography in sports injuries of the shoulder joint].

Sonography is a useful tool for the examination of the shoulder joint. Concomitant cartilaginous and soft tissue lesions (Hill-Sachs, effusion, cuff-tears) can be visualized. Subacromial pathology can be differentiated. The type of instability in the unstable shoulder can be documented. The ultrasound investigation is of diagnostic value for the unstable shoulder as well as for the impingement shoulder in athletes. Therefore it may be helpful for planning the adequate treatment and also for the follow up of the patients.

[Use of arthrosonography in the diagnosis of Tossy injuries of the shoulder joint].

In a pilot study specificity and sensibility of ultrasonics on Tossy III lesions were tested, and that in 20 cases of guaranteed intact acromioclavicular joints and 22 cases of radiologically diagnosed Tossy III lesions with a following operative control. Additionally in these 22 cases the contralateral acromioclavicular joints were also examined by ultrasonics. All examinations were registered on video tape. With it in a single blind test the exact diagnosis was made in all cases. The diagnosis was based on ultrasonic findings as visible instability, unevenness of the joint line, haematoma fo

[Methods for the surgical treatment of postburn contractures of the shoulder joint].

Based on their experience with the treatment of 93 patients with postburn adduction contracture of the shoulder the authors propose a classification related with localization of scars. Marginal contractures are successfully treated by plasty with a trapezoid skin-fat flap from the axillary cavity with/without a combination with the displacement of scarry tissues or free skin plasty; the medial contracture--by one or several pairs of trapezoid skin-fat flaps cut from leaves on the sides of the scar fold; the total contracture with the absence of intact skin in adjacent fields can be adequately

Arthroscopic surgery for the treatment of osteochondrosis in the equine shoulder joint.

Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and subchondral cyst-like lesions in 13 shoulders of 11 horses were treated arthroscopically by curettage and lavage. Lameness decreased in all 11 horses. Nine horses were sound, five of them athletically sound, after 5 to 20 months. Complications included the development of subchondral cyst-like lesions and signs of degenerative joint disease. Arthroscopic surgery of the equine shoulder can be done through two portals, one for the arthroscope and one for an instrument. A few hand instruments such as a probe, Ferris-Smith rongeurs, and small, large, and right-an
