Parallel thalamic activation of the first and second somatosensory areas in prosimian primates and tree shrews.

In Tupaia belangeri and Galago senegalensis, microelectrode recordings immediately after ablation of the representation of the forelimb in the midportion of the first somatosensory area, S-I, revealed that all parts of the second somatosensory area, S-II, remained highly responsive to cutaneous stimuli. In this way, prosimian primates, close relatives of simian primates, and tree shrews differ markedly from monkeys in which S-II is deactivated by comparable ablations, and resemble such mammals as cats and rabbits in which S-II also remains highly responsive following ablations in S-I. Thus, it…

The Coinfection of Bartonella spp. and Hantavirus in Wild Rodent and Shrew Species in Eastern China.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella spp. are Gram-negative bacteria that cause diseases including endocarditis, lymphadenopathy, and neuroretinitis. Hantavirus (HV), belonging to the family Hantaviridae, induces illnesses such as hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Both pathogens exhibit host specificity-defined as a preference or restriction to specific host species or ranges. Rodents and shrews are primary hosts for these pathogens, and their high coinfection rates often indicate elevated risk of human exposure. To our knowledge, however, data on Bartonella spp.-HV co…

Three-dimensional analysis of seminiferous tubules and spermatogenesis in the musk shrew, Suncus murinus.

We reconstructed in three dimensions all seminiferous tubules in the testes of 1- and 8-week-old musk shrews (Suncus murinus), a small experimental mammal belonging to the family Soricidae, order Eulipotyphla that preserves the primitive characteristics of mammalian species. Quantitative analyses revealed that the basic structure of seminiferous tubules at 1 week postpartum remained consistent into adulthood. A single dominant seminiferous tubule with extensive branching accounted for more than 90% of the length of all tubules, a feature distinct from that in mice and rats. Pachytene spermatoc…

Mapping function in the tree shrew visual system using functional ultrasound imaging.

We adapted functional ultrasound imaging (fUSI) for awake, head-fixed northern tree shrews and used it to produce functional maps of visual processing at ~100 μm spatial resolution and ~100 ms temporal resolution. Using classical retinotopic stimuli, full-field noise, motion localizers, and object versus scrambled object contrasts, we demonstrate robust, spatially specific hemodynamic responses across primary and extrastriate visual cortex, superior colliculus and subcortical structures. fUSI reliably reveals retinotopic reversals, laterality, and stimulus-selective modules, and yields high si…

Study of tree shrew biology and models: A booming and prosperous field for biomedical research.

The tree shrew ( Tupaia belangeri) has long been proposed as a suitable alternative to non-human primates (NHPs) in biomedical and laboratory research due to its close evolutionary relationship with primates. In recent years, significant advances have facilitated tree shrew studies, including the determination of the tree shrew genome, genetic manipulation using spermatogonial stem cells, viral vector-mediated gene delivery, and mapping of the tree shrew brain atlas. However, the limited availability of tree shrews globally remains a substantial challenge in the field. Additionally, determinin…

A novel tree shrew model of lipopolysaccharide-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a leading cause of respiratory failure, with substantial attributable morbidity and mortality. The small animal models that are currently used for ARDS do not fully manifest all of the pathological hallmarks of human patients, which hampers both the studies of disease mechanism and drug development. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether the phenotypic changes of primate-like tree shrews in response to a one-hit lipopolysaccharides (LPS) injury resemble human ARDS features. METHODS: LPS was administered to tree shrews through intratracheal …

Relative enlargement of the medial preoptic nucleus in the Etruscan shrew, the smallest torpid mammal.

Endothermy is a key feature of mammalian biology and enables mammals to maintain stable body temperature and homeostatic functions in the face of a rapidly changing environment. However, when faced with harsh environmental conditions, certain mammalian species enter torpor, a state characterized by reduced metabolism, body temperature, and activity, to minimize energy loss. Etruscan shrews are the smallest mammals, with a surface-to-volume ratio that is very unfavorable for endothermic animals. As a result, Etruscan shrews have an extremely high metabolic rate and are known to enter torpor fre…

HSV-1 infection and pathogenesis in the tree shrew eye following corneal inoculation.

Herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-1) infection causes inflammation in the cornea known as herpes simplex virus keratitis (HSK), a common but serious corneal disease. It is not entirely clear whether the virus during recurring infection comes from the trigeminal ganglia or the eye tissue, including the retina and ciliary ganglion. Because the tree shrew is closely related to primates and tree shrew eye anatomic structures are similar to humans, we studied HSV-1 corneal infection in the tree shrew. We found that HSK symptoms closely mimic those found in human HSK showing typical punctiform and de

Deciphering an extreme morphology: bone microarchitecture of the hero shrew backbone (Soricidae: Scutisorex).

Biological structures with extreme morphologies are puzzling because they often lack obvious functions and stymie comparisons to homologous or analogous features with more typical shapes. An example of such an extreme morphotype is the uniquely modified vertebral column of the hero shrew Scutisorex, which features numerous accessory intervertebral articulations and massively expanded transverse processes. The function of these vertebral structures is unknown, and it is difficult to meaningfully compare them to vertebrae from animals with known behavioural patterns and spinal adaptations. Here,

Potassium oxonate induces acute hyperuricemia in the tree shrew (tupaia belangeri chinensis).

Potassium oxonate, a selectively competitive uricase inhibitor, produced hyperuricemia (HUA) in rodents in a previous study. In this study, we employed the tree shrew as an animal model to study potassium oxonate-induced HUA. The effect of allopurinol (ALLO), a uric acid reducer, was also examined in this model. Potassium oxonate at doses of 5, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 1,000 mg/kg was given intraperitoneally to tree shrews. The results showed that potassium oxonate can effectively increase the levels of uric acid in tree shrews at doses ranging from 40 to 100 mg/kg. Semiquantitative RT-PCR sho…

Mandible asymmetry and genetic diversity in island populations of the common shrew, Sorex araneus.

Mandibles from 13 island and six mainland populations of common shrews from the west coast of Scotland were subjected to geometric morphometric analysis in order to investigate the relationship between genetic diversity and fluctuating asymmetry. Although population mean shape fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and size FA were significantly inversely correlated with population genetic diversity this result was substantially due to one island. Sanda, the smallest island with by far the lowest genetic diversity, also had the highest FA. When Sanda was removed from the analysis, the relationship was not…

Fibre-targeting mAb 28E8, however, showed protection only at a dose up to 12.5 mg/kg. In tree shrews that are permissive for HAdV55 infection and disease, mAb 29C12 effectively prevented HAdV55-caused pneumonia. Further analysis revealed that fibre-targeting mAbs blocked the attachment of HAdV55 to host cells, whereas hexon-targeting mAbs, regardle …
