This report describes the successful treatment of quadruple cancer including Bowen's disease in a 71-year-old man who had been given injections of salvarsan, an arsenic compound, for syphilis more than 40 years earlier. Resection of a skin lesion on his chest subsequently confirmed a diagnosis of Bowen's disease, 3 years after which he was operated on for concurrent gastric cancer and sigmoid colon cancer. A fourth cancer was discovered on his left vocal cord 2 weeks after this operation; it was resected 2 years later. A discussion of multiple malignant neoplasms and the possible relationship

The association between sebaceous neoplasms of the skin and visceral cancers, known as Muir-Torre syndrome, is described in three patients, including one with an extensive history of cancer in his family. The first patient, a 54-year-old man, developed multiple sebaceous adenomas, epitheliomas, and carcinomas in association with a colonic carcinoma 6 years after cardiac transplantation. Family history in this patient disclosed colon cancer in 17 relatives. The second patient was a 51-year-old man who had recurrent adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon, adenocarcinoma arising in Barrett's esophag

AIM: To review the risk of proximal colon cancer in patients undergoing colonoscopy.
METHODS: We estimated the risk of advanced proximal adenomas and cancers in 6 196 consecutive patients that underwent colonoscopy (mean age 60 years, 65% males, without prior history of colorectal examination). Neoplasms were classified as diminutive adenoma (5 mm or less), small adenoma (6-9 mm), advanced adenoma (10 mm or more, with villous component or high-grade dysplasia) and cancer (invasive adenocarcinoma). The sites of neoplasms were defined as rectosigmoid (rectum and sigmoid colon) and proximal colo

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are rare, typically benign Schwann cell neoplasms; within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the esophagus is the most frequent site. Eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases are chronic immune-mediated conditions encompassing eosinophilic esophagitis, gastroenteritis, and colitis. We describe a 49-year-old man with prior testicular seminoma, follicular thyroid carcinoma, and cutaneous GCTs who developed multifocal esophageal and rectal GCTs alongside eosinophilic esophagitis, esophagitis gastroenteritis, and esophagitis colitis, plus an incidental sigmoid neuroendocrin

PURPOSE: To describe the possible CT features of perforated colorectal tumors and to discuss the practical value of detecting this complication.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The CT examinations of 16 patients with perforated large bowel neoplasms were retrospectively reviewed. The most frequent locations were the sigmoid colon (6 cases), the cecum and ascending colon (4 cases) and the descending colon (4 cases). A correlation with barium enema findings was possible in 12 patients while in 14 subjects surgical confirmation was obtained.
RESULTS: The colorectal neoplasm was depicted on CT scans in 94

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMFT) of the colon is a very rare entity, characterized by proliferation of myofibroblast cells admixed with inflammatory infiltrates. The entity was first described in the late 1990s, and since then less than 30 cases have been described. It frequently mimics other neoplasm of the colon, such as adenocarcinoma, lymphoma and stromal tumor, and is very difficult to clinch the diagnosis preoperatively based on the clinical and radiological findings. Here, we discuss an uncommon case of sigmoid IMFT in a 35-year old male, presenting with bleeding per rectum and

A case of a surgically treated primary quartet cancer is reported, along with a review of the Japanese literature. A 68-year-old woman, curatively operated for a right breast cancer 6 years previously, was then diagnosed as having a left renal cell carcinoma, a thyroid cancer, and a sigmoid colon cancer as a result of a subsequent screening examination within one year. These synchronous, triple cancers were resected in a curative operation for each. Histopathologically, each neoplasm was proven to be a primary cancer lesion, and two different types (papillary and trabecular) were found in the

INTRODUCTION: Multiple primary neoplasms are relatively rare, but their incidence has increased because of aging and improvements in diagnostic imaging.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 67-year-old man presented with epigastric pain. On upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, an ulcer was seen at the gastric angle, and biopsy showed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (AC). Colonoscopy demonstrated a 15-mm lesion in the sigmoid colon and a submucosal lesion in the lower rectum. The biopsy showed well differentiated AC and neuroendocrine tumor (NET). In addition, abdominal CT and MRI showed a 14-mm nodu

BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy is used for early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer, but evidence on the magnitude of overall protection and protection according to anatomical site through colonoscopy performed in the community setting is sparse. We assessed whether receiving a colonoscopy in the preceding 10-year period, compared with no colonoscopy, was associated with prevalence of advanced colorectal neoplasms (defined as cancers or advanced adenomas) at various anatomical sites.
METHODS: A statewide cross-sectional study was conducted among 3287 participants in screening colonoscopy

Primary carcinoid tumor of the ovary is an extremely rare neoplasm, accounting for less than 0.1 % of all ovarian neoplasms. We report a case of a 79-year-old woman with locally advanced ovarian carcinoid presenting as acute abdomen. At laparotomy, a large mass appeared in the pelvis, with maximum size of 18 cm, growing from the left ovary with infiltration of the left Fallopian tube and compression of the small bowel and the sigmoid tract. A bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed, and the tumor mass was completely removed. Post-operative treatments were not considered due to the absenc

Leiomyoma is defined as a benign proliferation of smooth muscle cells. Smooth muscle tumors are considered the second-most common mesenchymal neoplasm in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It typically occurs incidentally in the large bowel. Colonic leiomyomas are considered to be very rare and commonly found in the descending or sigmoid colon. We report a case of a 32-year-old woman with no previous medical illness who presented with on-and-off abdominal pain, was found to have a left colonic mass, and underwent laparoscopic left hemicolectomy, with the final histopathological assessment reveal

A 73-year-old man underwent distal pancreatectomy for invasive pancreatic ductal carcinoma in 2018. He showed stenosis of sigmoid colon due to recurrence of pancreatic cancer and received transverse colostomy in 2020. One year after initiation of gemcitabine monotherapy, he complained of abdominal pain. CT images and colonoscopy revealed accumulation of mucus in sigmoid colon due to stenotic lesions. Because conservative treatment using antibiotics was not effective, we performed sigmoidectomy. Histological examination revealed that tubular adenocarcinoma located mainly in the muscularis propr

The endoscopic full-thickness resection (EFTR) is established in ablation of recurrent colorectal adenomas, which cannot be removed by endoscopic resection in cases of fibrosis. The EFTR can be applied with low risk, in one step, with the use of special devices, such as the full-thickness resection device (FTRD®). The main risks described in literature are bleeding and perforations. The mentioned perforations were explained by previous defects of the device system or patient-related predisposed parameters for perforation. We report the case of a 55-year old woman who underwent an endoscopic ful

We report on a 22-year-old man with congenital hypogammaglobulinemia who developed multiple colorectal neoplasms. An immunodeficiency had been diagnosed in the patient since two years of age, and this time many tumors of the sigmoid colon and rectum were detected by barium enema and fiberscopy. Abdominoperineal resection was performed, and the resected specimen revealed 29 polyps, including 9 adenocarcinomas and 20 adenomas. The carcinomas, measuring 0.8 to 11.0 cm in size, showed various depths of invasion, and the adenomas, measuring 0.2 to 1.5 cm in size, showed various degrees of epithelia

BACKGROUND: Malfunctioning of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC)/β-catenin signaling pathway is both an early and common event in sporadic colorectal cancer. To assess the potential of APC/β-catenin signaling pathway markers as treatable, preneoplastic biomarkers of risk for colorectal neoplasms, we conducted a pilot colonoscopy-based case-control study (51 cases and 154 controls) of incident, sporadic colorectal adenoma.
METHODS: We evaluated APC, β-catenin, and E-cadherin expression in normal mucosa from the rectum and ascending and sigmoid colon using automated immunohistochemical and qu
