Origin of cell contrast in offset aperture adaptive optics ophthalmoscopy.

Offset aperture and split detector imaging are variants of adaptive optics scanning ophthalmoscopy recently introduced to improve the image contrast of retinal cells. Unlike conventional confocal scanning ophthalmoscopy, these approaches collect light laterally decentered from the optical axis. A complete explanation of how these methods enhance contrast has not been described. Here, we provide an optical model with supporting in vivo data that show contrast is generated from spatial variations in the refractive index as it is in phase contrast microscopy. A prediction of this model is support

Optimization of optical systems for low Earth orbit satellites observation under strong background radiation conditions.

Strong sky background radiation and the angular motion of satellites are the key challenges that limit the daytime observations of low-orbit Earth satellites. To enhance the capability of satellite observation, a theoretical method for optimizing the optical system is proposed in this study. Firstly, the degradation of the satellite optical signal due to angular motion is characterized by an effective magnitude based on the theory of satellite photometric characteristics. Then, the analytical relationship of the satellite observation signal-to-noise ratio with exposure time is derived. Meanwhi…

Automatic selection of IMFs to denoise the sEMG signals using EMD.

Surface Electromyography (sEMG) signals are muscle activation signals, which has applications in muscle diagnosis, rehabilitation, prosthetics, and speech etc. However, they are known to be affected by noises such as Power Line Interference (PLI), motion artifacts etc. Currently, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and its modifications such as Ensemble EMD (EEMD), and Complementary EEMD (CEEMD) are used to decompose EMG into a series of Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs). The denoised EMG can be obtained from the selected IMFs. Statistical methods are used to select the signal dominant IMFs to re

Singular Value Decomposition for Removal of Cardiac Interference from Trunk Electromyogram.

A new algorithm based on singular value decomposition (SVD) to remove cardiac contamination from trunk electromyography (EMG) is proposed. Its performance is compared to currently available algorithms at different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The algorithm is applied on individual channels. An experimental calibration curve to adjust the number of SVD components to the SNR (0-20 dB) is proposed. A synthetic dataset is generated by the combination of electrocardiography (ECG) and EMG to establish a ground truth reference for validation. The performance is compared with state-of-the-art algori…

An optimized method for tremor detection and temporal tracking through repeated second order moment calculations on the surface EMG signal.

In this study, the problem of detecting and tracking tremor from the surface myoelectric signal is addressed. A method based on the calculation of a Second Order Moment Function (SOMF) inside a window W sliding over the sEMG signal is here presented. An analytical formulation of the detector allows the extraction of the optimal parameters characterizing the algorithm. Performance of the optimized method is assessed on a set of synthetic tremor sEMG signals in terms of sensitivity, precision and accuracy through the use of a properly defined cost function able to explain the overall detector pe

Voxel-Matching NORDIC: Non-local patch formation by time-series similarity increases tSNR in high-resolution BOLD fMRI.

Submillimeter functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) based on blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) signal enables the study of brain function at the submillimeter level, uncovering insights into fine-scale organisations like cortical layers and columns. However, its inherently low contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) often limit its reliability and applicability. Noise Reduction with Distribution Corrected Principal Components Analysis (NORDIC PCA) is a locally low-rank denoising algorithm that reduces thermal noise levels in BOLD fMRI in a local patch manner…
