Changes in skin temperature of hyperbilirubinemic newborns under phototherapy: conventional versus fiberoptic device.

The purpose of this study is to determine the changes in skin temperature of hyperbilirubinemic term newborns under conventional and fiberoptic phototherapy. The study included a group of 41 hyperbilirubinemic, but otherwise healthy, term infants, all of appropriate size for gestational age. The study was devised to include two separate groups: group 1 of 21 infants (51.2%) received conventional phototherapy, and group 2 of 20 infants (48.8%) received fiberoptic phototherapy. In both groups the surface temperature on the forehead, abdomen, left leg and back was calculated by infrared radiation…

Forehead skin temperature and thermal sensation during exercise in cool and thermoneutral environments.

BACKGROUND: The influence of forehead and mean skin temperature on thermal sensation during exercise in hot, cool, and thermoneutral environments is unclear. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that forehead temperature, in contrast to other skin sites, would contribute significantly to thermal sensation during exercise in hot, cool, and thermoneutral environments. METHOD: Volunteer males (N = 14) performed 30 min of constant load exercise on a cycle ergometer during which thermal sensation, skin and rectal temperatures, and heart rate were collected. Each subject participated in a control (24 degre…

Post-herpetic neuralgia: the relation of pain complaint, sensory disturbance, and skin temperature.

Twelve otherwise healthy patients with longstanding postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) were prospectively studied using clinical examination, infrared thermography and response to local anesthetic skin infiltration. All had at least 2 of 3 possible components to their PHN pain: continuous, neuralgic, or allodynic. In patients with allodynia, maximal reported pain and the location of maximal allodynia on sensory examination were largely overlapping and were often warm thermographically. Areas of dense sensory loss and skin scarring without allodynia were usually cool thermographically. Local anesthet

Effect of spinal cord injury on the skin temperature of different regions of interest during a graded exercise test in a moderate temperature environment.

The gradient between core and skin temperature is a relevant factor in heat exchange between the human body and the environment, but people with spinal cord injury (SCI), due to their autonomic dysfunction, have impaired mechanisms that condition skin temperature response. This study aimed to determine how SCI affects skin temperature response in different ROIs during a graded exercise test in a moderate temperature environment. 32 participants were included in the study [SCI (N = 16); Non-SCI (N = 16)]. A graded exercise test was conducted on an arm crank ergometer, with a staged duration of …

A Wearable System for Remote Wrist Skin Temperature Monitoring to Assess Skin Thermal Response to Extreme Cold: A Case Study.

Skin temperature measurement is a complex issue. Skin tissue is one of the main thermoregulatory organs and takes major responsibility for heat exchange in the organism. Accurate skin temperature measurement may contribute to better estimation of deep core temperature, which is why enhancing possibilities of skin temperature measurement is considered substantial. However, the real value of the skin temperature can be influenced by many biological and non-biological factors. Some of the external factors such as extensive wind or extreme ambient temperature may significantly influence the raw va…

Reproducibility of Thermography for Measuring Skin Temperature of Upper Limbs in Breast Cancer Survivors.

Background/Objectives: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a chronic condition that has early diagnosis as a critical component for proper treatment. Thermography, a non-invasive imaging method, is considered a promising complementary tool for the diagnosis and monitoring of BCRL, especially in subclinical stages. The present study aimed to evaluate the intra- and inter-examiner reproducibility of thermography for measuring the skin temperature of the upper limbs (UL) of women with and without BCRL. Methods: This study, conducted with women who underwent a unilateral mastectomy, assesse…

A temperature-controlled radio frequency combined with ultrasounds and laser for skin laxity and cellulitis.

Skin laxity and Oedematous Fibrosclerotic Panniculopathy are common issues affecting the women population. Finding and developing treatments to counteract ageing indications and conform to social norms of beauty has been increasingly important in aesthetic medicine in recent times. Many non-invasive techniques, including radiofrequency, lasers, and ultrasounds, have been created. This study used a multi-handpiece device with laser (808 nm) and ultrasound (37 kHz) handpieces, as well as radiofrequency and various temperature-controlling applicators depending on the body site (3 or 6 tips). Base

Skin temperature as a predictor of on-the-road driving performance in people with central disorders of hypersomnolence.

Excessive daytime sleepiness is the core symptom of central disorders of hypersomnolence (CDH) and can directly impair driving performance. Sleepiness is reflected in relative alterations in distal and proximal skin temperature. Therefore, we examined the predictive value of skin temperature on driving performance. Distal and proximal skin temperature and their gradient (DPG) were continuously measured in 44 participants with narcolepsy type 1, narcolepsy type 2 or idiopathic hypersomnia during a standardised 1-h driving test. Driving performance was defined as the standard deviation of latera…

The vulvar skin microenvironment: influence of different panty liners on temperature, pH and microflora.

The aim of this study was to confirm findings that vapour-impermeable panty liners might impair skin climate, and to assess their impact on the skin microflora. Temperature, surface pH and aerobic microflora were measured on vulvar skin of 102 women. The mean skin temperature was 1.1 degrees C higher when using a vapour-impermeable panty liner compared with not using one. Use of panty liners with vapour-permeable back sheets and acidic cores resulted in skin temperature, pH and microflora levels that were very close to those observed in persons not using liners. The temperature, pH and total n…

The significance of changes in the temperature of the skin and body core of the chicken in the regulation of heat loss.

1. The relationship between the temperatures of the hypothalamus, colon and skin and the control of heat loss mechanisms at ambient temperatures from 20 to 40 degrees C has been studied in unanaesthetized chickens.2. The temperatures of the core and feathered skin varied by not more than 5 degrees C throughout the full range of ambient temperature but the comb, shank and toe varied by up to 20 degrees C and exhibited wide fluctuations in constant environmental conditions.3. At an ambient temperature of 26-27 degrees C, the fluctuations ceased at all of the naked skin sites and there was eviden

Regional skin wetness perception and its modulation by warm and cold whole body skin temperatures in people with multiple sclerosis.

Skin wetness sensing is important for thermal stress resilience. Individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) present greater vulnerability to thermal stress; yet, it is unclear whether they present wetness-sensing abnormalities. We investigated the effects of MS on wetness sensing and their modulation with changes in mean skin temperature (Tsk). Twelve participants with MS [5 males (M)/7 females (F); 48.3 ± 10.8 yr; Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) range: 1-7] and 11 healthy controls (4 M/7 F; 47.5 ± 11.3 yr) undertook three trials, during which they performed a quantitative sensory test w…

Finger systolic pressures and skin temperatures in severe Raynaud's syndrome: the relationship to healing of skin lesions and the use of oral phenoxybenzamine.

Systolic pressures and skin temperatures were studied in 23 patients with severe Raynaud's syndrome who were given oral phenoxybenzamine. There was a relationship between the measurements and the severity of the disease. Statistically significant correlation was found between the measurements and the time for healing of skin lesions. The chances of early healing are high when digital systolic pressure exceeds 55 mm Hg, the branchial-finger pressure difference is less than 50mm Hg, and the maximal difference among fingers less than 30 mm Hg. Early healing is also likely when finger temperature …

Measuring Skin Temperature as an Indicator for Cognitive Flow Using a Wrist-worn Wearable.

As traditional fitness sensors have revolutionized engagement in exercise through continuous feedback on physical effort and exertion, continuous feedback provided by wearable sensors can help us optimize our mental engagement and experience. To that end, our research focuses on developing a framework for measuring cognitive flow using physiological data which can be readily collected through wrist-worn wearable sensors. Previous research suggests that movement and skin temperature are strong predictors of flow state. While movement is a precursor to flow in many cases, an increase in skin tem…
