PURPOSE: Sleep enuresis (SE) is the second most common sleep complaint in childhood. It has been associated with bladder hyperactivity, excessive urine production and deeper sleep. Several sleep disorders have been described in association with SE like parasomnias and sleep apnea. The aim of this study was to analyze the presence of sleep disturbances in children with SE through the use of Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) compared to normal children matched for age and sex.
METHODS: A questionnaire evaluation was performed in 76 enuretic and 112 normal children through the Sleep Di

Sleep deprivation in humans is widely believed to impair health, and sleep is thought to have powerful restorative properties. The specific physical and biochemical factors and processes mediating these outcomes, however, are poorly elucidated. Sleep deprivation in the animal model produces a condition that eventually becomes highly lethal, lacks specific localization, and is reversible with sleep, implying mediation by a biochemical abnormality. Metabolic and immunological consequences of sleep deprivation point to a high potential for antioxidant imbalance. The objective, therefore, was to s

The study of ethanol's effects on sleep has a long history dating back to the work of Nathaniel Kleitman. This paper reviews the extensive literature describing ethanol's effects on the sleep of healthy normals and alcoholics and the newer literature that describes its interactive effects on daytime sleepiness, physiological functions during sleep, and sleep disorders. Ethanol initially improves sleep in non-alcoholics at both low and high doses with disturbance in the second half of the night sleep at high doses. Tolerance develops to the initial beneficial effects. In alcoholics sleep is dis

This study compared sleep architecture in women and men with sleep apnoea syndrome. Women (n = 126) had longer sleep latencies, greater amounts of slow wave sleep, and fewer awakenings during the night than men (n = 181), despite no differences in age, RDI (Respiratory Disturbance Index) or oxygen saturation. In a subgroup of men and women treated with nasal CPAP, gender differences generally persisted. There was no difference in the complaint of daytime sleepiness between the groups, but the women reported more fatigue during the day than the men, as well as complaining about more sleep distu

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with impaired sleep quality and autonomic dysfunction. Adenotonsillectomy significantly improves subjective and objective sleep quality in children with OSA. However, the postoperative changes in heart rate variability (HRV) indices (indicators of cardiac autonomic function) and their importance remain inconclusive in childhood OSA. This retrospective case series aimed to investigate the association of sleep HRV indices, total OSA-18 questionnaire score (a subjective indicator of sleep quality) and polysomnographic parameters (objective i

PURPOSE: To determine obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) phenotypes using cluster analysis including variables of sleep perception and sleep quality and to further explore factors correlated with poor sleep quality in different clusters.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with OSA undergoing polysomnography (PSG) between December 2020 and April 2022. Two-step cluster analysis was performed to detect distinct clusters using sleep perception variables including discrepancy in total sleep time (TST), sleep onset latency (SOL), and wakefulness after sleep onset (WASO); objective TST,

Laboratory-based sleep manipulations show asymmetries between positive and negative affect, but say little about how more specific moods might change. We report extensive analyzes of items from the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) during days following nights of chronic sleep restriction (6 h sleep opportunity), during 40 h of acute sleep deprivation under constant routine conditions, and during a week-long forced desynchrony protocol in which participants lived on a 28-h day. Living in the laboratory resulted in medium effects sizes on all positive moods (Attentiveness, General Posi

UNLABELLED: Sleep terrors are a non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep-related parasomnia characterized by abrupt terror with a frightening scream. However, it remains unknown whether sleep terrors occur only from NREM sleep. We evaluated 3 cases of a sleep terrors-like parasomnia that occurred exclusively during arousals from rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. These parasomnia events occurred at REM sleep-wake transitions, manifesting with screaming or crying, similar to sleep terrors, without alertness or clear orientation. The patients were all young-adult females without notable medical conditio

BACKGROUND: Trauma-related sleep disturbances constitute critical symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but sleep symptoms often reside even after successful trauma-focused psychotherapy. Therefore, currently unattended factors - like fear of sleep (FoS) - might play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of residual sleep disturbances. However, it is unclear whether trauma-exposed individuals exhibit different symptomatic profiles of sleep disturbances that could inform individualized therapeutic approaches and eventually enhance treatment efficacy.
METHOD: In a large

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that, owing to difficulties falling asleep or maintaining sleep and/or early morning awakening, causes daytime functional impairment. Other sleep disorders include sleep-related breathing disorders; sleep-related movement disorders, such as periodic limb movement disorder and restless legs syndrome; parasomnias, such as rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and sleepwalking; and central disorders of hypersomnolence, such as narcolepsy. This article describes sleep disorders that are routinely observed in daily clinical practice.

Sleep disorders are frequent and can have serious consequences on patients' health and quality of life. While some sleep disorders are more challenging to treat, most can be easily managed with adequate interventions. We review the main diagnostic features of 6 major sleep disorders (insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep-disordered breathing, hypersomnia/narcolepsy, parasomnias, and restless legs syndrome/periodic limb movement disorder) to aid medical practitioners in screening and treating sleep disorders as part of clinical practice.

In 2017 the German Sleep Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Schlafforschung und Schlafmedizin, DGSM) published the new S3 guideline "Nonrestorative Sleep/Sleep Disorders, chapter "Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders in Adults".Sleep apnea contributes to an increased morbidity and mortality in patients with cardiovascular diseases, e. g. coronary heart disease, heart failure and diabetes mellitus and is associated with an increased perioperative risk. It is also an important comorbidity in respiratory, neurologic and oncologic diseases. Treatment of sleep apnea can improve daytime sleepiness, qua

Sleep hypoventilation is seen in patients with neuromuscular disease, as well as in those with obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), which is defined as the combination of obesity, chronic hypercapnia, and hypoxemia during wakefulness that is aggravated during sleep. In 90% of cases, OHS is accompanied by obstructive sleep apnea. The diagnosis of OHS is based on hypoventilation and pulmonary hypertension that cannot be explained by alterations in pulmonary function. The mortality of patients with OHS is greater than is that of obese patients without hypoventilation. The principal neuromuscul

This review examines the biological background to the development of ideas on rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep), so-called paradoxical sleep (PS), and its relation to dreaming. Aspects of the phenomenon which are discussed include physiological changes and their anatomical location, the effects of total and selective sleep deprivation in the human and animal, and REM sleep behavior disorder, the latter with its clinical manifestations in the human. Although dreaming also occurs in other sleep phases (non-REM or NREM sleep), in the human, there is a contingent relation between REM sleep and

Humans spend approximately one third of their lives asleep. Although the same medical disorders that occur during wakefulness persist into sleep, there are many disorders that occur exclusively during sleep or are manifestations of a disturbance of normal sleep-wake physiology. The most common reason for referral to a sleep laboratory is OSA, whereas the most common sleep disorder is insomnia. Effective treatments now exist for many sleep disorders, such as OSA and RLS, and a major breakthrough in the treatment of narcolepsy seems imminent. Because all disease processes are adversely affected
