[Diagnosis and therapy of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in children with premature craniosynostosis syndromes].

Sleep related breathing disorders are a common symptom in children with craniosynostosis syndromes, as upper airways may be narrowed by midfacial hypoplasia. To better characterize the sleep related apneas, 24 children with syndromal craniofacial dysplasia underwent 68 poly-somnographies. 9 patients had reexaminations after therapeutic procedures. 4 patients had severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrom (OSAS), 8 patients had moderate and 11 patients mild obstructive sleep apnea respectivly. Only one child had no obstructive sleep apnea. Children with Morbus Crouzon tended to have moderate to seve

Roles of gender, age, race/ethnicity, and residential socioeconomics in obstructive sleep apnea syndromes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Review recent research on the roles of gender, race/ethnicity, residential socioeconomics and age in obstructive sleep apnea syndromes (OSA) and their treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: Men have a higher prevalence of OSA than women and require higher continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) pressures for treatment, given similar severity of OSA. When comparing age, women have less severe apnea at all ages. Menopause, pregnancy and polycystic ovarian syndrome increase the risk for OSA in women. Neck fat and BMI influence apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) severity in women; abdominal fa…

Down Syndrome children with obstructive sleep apnea.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a complex disorder with significant clinical consequences for people with Down Syndrome (DS). OSAS is frequently seen in individuals with DS and, when present, tends to be more severe than in individuals without this syndrome. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The analysis was carried out on PubMed, Google Scholar and Cochrane library databases. The literature review identified nine studies suitable for our evaluations according to the established inclusion criteria. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: The results of the study suggest that OSAS may be a common co

Bradyarrhythmia Suspected to be Associated with Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is a condition in which apnea and hypoventilation at night cause hypoxemia and impaired wakefulness during the day, resulting in a general malaise and dozing. Sleep apnea has been implicated in the development of hypertension, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia, heart failure, and cerebrovascular disease.1) Approximately 50% of patients with sleep-disordered breathing have an arrhythmia. In severe cases with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of 30 or more, the frequency of arrhythmias during sleep is two to four times that of individuals without SAS. Bradyarrhythmias suc

[Drugs affecting obstructive sleep apnea syndrome].

Sleep-disordered breathing is one of the most common sleep-associated disorders. At the same time, their prevalence tends to increase with age. One of the most common forms of respiratory failure during sleep is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA), which is characterized by repeated episodes of cessation of breathing or a significant decrease in respiratory flow while maintaining respiratory effort as a result of obstruction of the upper respiratory tract. Drugs have different effects on OSA. There are drugs that worsen OSA, drugs that do not affect OSA, and drugs that improve OSA. Benzodia

Eyelid laxity and sleep apnea syndrome: a review.

The purpose of this paper is to review the association between a medical entity called the floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) and a very serious respiratory disease with repercussions on various other body organs and systems: the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. The epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of these two diseases are intertwined but still not enough recognized. Eye disorders affect a great number of patients in modern societies and the cause of their suffering is often left undiscovered, practitioners preferring a symptomatic treatment. However, the ophthalmologist should be awar

Is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome related to nocturia?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). METHODS: This multicenter study was performed on 122 male patients with dyspnea and/or sleep disorder. Patient characteristics were recorded. All patients underwent full-night polysomnography, and the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was calculated. LUTS were evaluated using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and prostate volume was calculated by transabdominal ultrasonography. B

Increased Vagal Tone and Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

It has been observed that atrial overdrive pacing abolishes sleep apnea syndrome, but how it does so has not been explained. There is a possibility that it sends a retrograde inhibitory impulse to the vagal center in the brainstem, which in turn reduces the vagal tone, and thus prevents sleep apnea. Therefore, medical vagolytics such as atropine type of drugs should have the same effect. This is a case report of such an attempt.

[Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and cognition: A review].

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of airflow cessation, resulting in brief arousals and intermittent hypoxemia. OSAS is associated with a number of adverse health consequences, and cognitive difficulties. The overall pattern of cognitive impairment in OSAS is complex, and research in this field is mixed. On balance, OSAS have negative effects on cognition, most likely in the domain of attention/vigilance, verbal and visual delayed long-term memory, and executive functions. A still unanswered question is whether th

The Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Syndromic Craniosynostosis.

Syndromic craniosynostosis comprises a group of rare conditions often associated with fibroblast growth factor receptor gene mutations. Premature fusion of cranial sutures leads to facial and cranial dysmorphism, which is associated with upper airway compromise and a high incidence of obstructive sleep apnea. The authors performed a literature search to determine the evidence base for interventions used to treat obstructive sleep apnea in this patient group.A search strategy identified 503 papers of which 23 were included. There was evidence for craniofacial surgery, adenotonsillectomy and pal

[Transoral robotic surgery for sleep apnea syndrome].

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a multisystem disorder which adversely affects all body systems including cardiovascular system particularly and the quality of life. Although continuous positive airway pressure is an effective way of treatment in the treatment of OSAS, a substantial proportion of patients are not able to tolerate this treatment and seek for alternative treatment modalities. Transoral robotic lingual tonsillectomy is a novel technique for the surgical management of patients with OSAS. In this article, we report a 57-year-old female case with OSAS due to bilateral lin

Choroidal Thickening in Patients with Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

Sleep apnoea syndrome (SAS) is characterised by repetitive episodes of cessation of breathing during sleep, resulting in hypoxaemia and hypercapnia. Ophthalmological consequences such as glaucoma, non-arteritic anterior ischaemic neuropathy and papilloedema are relevant to hypoxaemia. The choroid is a vascular structure that performs several regulatory functions for the retina. Defects in this structure contribute to degenerative, inflammatory, and neovascular changes in the retina. The authors examined the choroidal thickness (CT) in sleep apnoea patients using optical coherence tomograpy (OC

Headache in sleep apnea syndrome: epidemiology and pathophysiology.

This review investigates the relation between obstructive sleep apnea and sleep apnea headache, migraine and tension-type headache. Focus is made on studies from the general population with interviews conducted by a physician and obstructive sleep apnea confirmed by polysomnography. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is observed in 3% of the middle-aged population. The prevalence of sleep apnea headache in this population is 12%-18%, while morning headache with similar symptomatology as sleep apnea headache occur in 5%-8% of the general population. People with sleep apnea headache did have signi

Rehabilitation of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

The current treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) focuses on alleviation of symptoms by increasing airway patency during sleep through positive airway pressure, oral appliances, changes in sleep position, weight loss, or surgical treatment. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is currently the treatment of choice and prevents upper airway obstruction, resulting in improved sleep architecture and daytime symptoms. Despite proven efficacy, adherence to CPAP treatment is still not efficient. The new methods of rehabilitation (exercise training programs, hypoglossal nerve stim

[Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome in children].

Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep respiratory disorder characterized by cessation or reduction in air flow through the nose and mouth, leading to a drop in oxygen saturation in the arterial blood, increased respiratory muscle work, arousals and sleep fragmentation. Pathophysiology of the syndrome is multifactorial, with the major role of addenotonsillar hypertrophy and obesity. The frequency of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children grows, which is partly a secondary phenomenon to the rise in the frequency of obesity. The clinical picture is characterized by numerous symptoms that occur du

Frequency of sleep apnea in adults with the Marfan syndrome.

Obstructive and central sleep apneas are treatable disorders, which contribute to cardiovascular morbidity in older adults. Younger adults with Marfan syndrome may also be at risk for sleep apnea, but the relation between cardiovascular complications and sleep apnea is unknown. We used MiniScreen8 portable monitoring devices for polygraphy in 68 consecutive adults with Marfan syndrome (33 men, 35 women, 41 +/- 14 years old) to investigate frequency of sleep apnea and its relation to cardiovascular morbidity. The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was 6 to 15/hour in 14 subjects (mild sleep apnea, 21%)

[Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in young infants].

UNLABELLED: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) has been reported among children aged 3-6 years. Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is the most common cause of OSAS. The upper airway obstruction results in repeated obstructive apneas and hypopneas, associated with oxygen desaturations and sleep fragmentation. OSAS in children is associated with higher respiratory morbidity as well as significant clinical consequences, mainly neurocognitive and behavioral problems, impaired growth and cardiac dysfunction. The objectives of the present study were to determine the clinical and sleep characteristics o
