A review of bites by non-front-fanged snakes (NFFS) of Europe.

Non-front-fanged snakes (NFFS) have long been overlooked by snake venom research, likely due to most of them being considered non-medically relevant for humans. The paucity of information about composition and activities of NFFS venoms and oral secretions makes it difficult to assess whether a given species can inflict medically significant bites. Here, we provide a review of the information currently available about the symptoms/signs elicited by bites from European NFFS, aiming to offer a foundation for understanding the threat they pose in terms of snakebite. Despite an overall limited amou

Persistent fibrinogen deficiency after snake bite: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC) is characterized by coagulation dysfunction accompanied by decreased coagulation factor activity and fibrinogen (FBG) concentrations. We report a patient with VICC caused by snake bite who manifested persistent FBG deficiency without abnormal coagulation factor activity. This information may be helpful in diagnosing and treating VICC. CASE SUMMARY: A 49-year-old man who had been bitten by a snake 13 h previously was admitted to the Emergency Department of our hospital with visible swelling of a finger and a bleeding puncture site. A study of clinical profile of snake bite at a tertiary care centre.

BACKGROUND: Snake bite is an important occupational and rural hazard because India has always been a land of Exotic snakes. In Maharashtra, common poisonous snakes are Cobra, Russell's Viper, Saw Scaled Viper, and Krait. It is a fact that inspite of heavy morbidity and mortality, very little attention is paid by the clinicians to this occupational hazard. AIMS: To study the prevalence of poisonous and non-poisonous snake bites in part of Western Maharashtra with reference to age, sex, occupation, part of body bitten, time of bite and seasonal variation, and the types of poisonous snakes commo…

TOXICOLOGY AND TREATMENT: MEDICAL AUTHORITIES AND SNAKE-BITE IN THE MIDDLE AGES.

By end of the thirteenth century, surgeons and university-trained physicians in Western Europe had a plethora of authorities from the Greco-Roman and Arabic tradition from which to consult for the treatment of snake-bites. Venomous animals receive the largest share of attention in the literature on biting animals. Nearly all of the sources focus on the idea of the animal biting or puncturing the skin's surface with their mouths and few poisonous animals where the venom is passed on through the skin or hairs are mentioned. Venomous animals frequently appear in discussions on poisons in general,

Neurological effects of venomous bites and stings: snakes, spiders, and scorpions.

Snake and spider bites, as well as scorpion sting envenoming, are neglected diseases affecting millions of people all over the world. Neurological complications vary according to the offending animal, and are often directly related to toxic effects of the venom, affecting the central nervous system, the neuromuscular transmission, the cardiovascular system, or the coagulation cascade. Snake bite envenoming may result in stroke or muscle paralysis. Metalloproteinases and other substances (common in vipers and colubrids) have anticoagulant or procoagulant activity, and may induce ischemic or hem

Hypertensive encephalopathy following snake bite in a child: A diagnostic dilemma.

Children in rural India are a vulnerable group for snake bites. Improper elicitation of history and atypical presentations could lead to misdiagnosis and delay in treatment. We are reporting the case of an 8-year-old male child who presented with convulsions, unconsciousness and hypertension who was initially managed as a case of hypertensive encephalopathy showing no sign of improvement even after 20 hs. The history when reviewed suggested neurotoxic snake bite although the patient did not have any classical local findings. Anti-snake venom administration was followed by prompt recovery. We t…

Posterior circulation stroke in a young male following snake bite.

Neurological deficits can occur following snake bite. It is usually due to intracerebral haemorrhage or subarachnoid bleed as a result of depletion of clotting factors. A healthy 14-years-old male developed bilateral ptosis and altered sensorium within 3 hours of snake bite. CT Brain revealed bilateral cerebellar and right occipital infarction with mass effect. Clotting time and bleeding time were normal. The possible mechanism for infarction in this patient is discussed.

Pulmonary oedema complicating snake bite due to Bungarus caeruleus.

Cardiotoxicity is an unusual manifestation of severe neurotoxic snake envenoming and is previously unreported with snake bites due to kraits. We describe a 26-year-old male Indian farmer who developed cardiogenic pulmonary oedema after neurotoxic snake envenoming by Bungarus caeruleus (Indian krait). We also review the literature on cardiac manifestations, the possible mechanisms and treatment of patients with cardiotoxicity accompanying neurotoxic snake envenoming. Cardiac involvement can complicate the course of snakebites. Recognition of cardiac involvement can warn the emergency physician …

[Snake bite poisoning and compartment syndrome. A report of two cases].

Snakebite poisonings are frequent In Morocco, because of the delay in treatment, they can be very serious even lethal. Treatment has two components: firstly correction of the systemic hemodynamic, respiratory and haematological disturbances and secondly administration of specific antivenom. Envenomation of a limb can lead to cutaneous necrosis, compartment syndrome and even necrotising fascitis. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment is needed to prevent these complications. We report two cases of compartment syndrome of which one was combined with systemic manifestations and the other caused re

An epidemiological study of snake bite envenomation in Papua New Guinea.

We report a study of 347 patients with snake bite envenomation in Papua New Guinea. The male: female ratio of the victims was 1.6:1 and their mean age was 24.5 years; 26% were children less than 15 years old. In all cases in which the bite site was known (334) the snake had bitten the extremities of the victim, with 71.3% of these bites being on the ankle or below. The patients came from three regions: urban Papua, rural Papua and (mostly rural) New Guinea. Snake bites occurred more frequently during the daytime in all regions, but this pattern was less obvious in New Guinea (P = 0.004), refle…

[Ischemic stroke, an unusual complication of snake bite: case report].

Snake bite is the most severe type of envenomation. Annual incidence exceeds six million, with high mortality rates. Viper bites are often responsible for coagulopathy, which causes bleeding disorders. However, ischemic complications are rare. We here report the case of a 6-year-old girl victim of a viper [genus Cerastes] bite in the left ankle. She was admitted with disorders of consciousness and disseminated intravascular coagulation 4 days after the bite. Clinical examination showed left hemiparesis and left lower limb viperin syndrome. Brain CT scan objectified right temporoparietal ischem

Algorithmic approach to the prevention of unnecessary fasciotomy in extremity snake bite.

BACKGROUND: In the literature, there is a lack of a consensus about the occurrence of the compartment syndrome due to the snake bites. There are different concepts for the surgical treatment of the threshold value of the chamber pressure. There are many different classifications and assessment criteria for the snakebites. PURPOSE: There is not any appropriate classification in order to the assessment of extremity snake bites while making a decision for fasciotomy. We aimed to standardize the follow-up and decision making to perform fasciotomy with a new classification system for the snakebite…

Hypopituitarism and AutoimmuneThyroiditis Following Snake Bite: An Unusual Clinical Scenario.

Snake venom can cause local tissue damage and lead to coagulopathy, shock, neurotoxicity and acute kidney injury. Hypopituitarism is a rare complication following snake bite. It has been described following Russell's viper bite from Burma and South India. Herein we describe a patient who presented with severe thyrotoxicosis and partial hypopituitarism following snake bite.

Bilateral parotid enlargement following snake bite: a rare sign.

Snakebite is a common medical emergency in India. Unusual complications may occur after viper bite. Bilateral parotid enlargement after viper bite is a rare entity. An 18-year old gentleman presented to our hospital with history of viper bite. On examination he had cellulitis of right lower limb. He developed swelling of both the parotid glands 12 h after admission. He developed coagulopathy, acute renal failure and died within 48 h of hospital admission. Development of parotid swelling after snake bite is associated with poor prognosis. This case is found worth reporting as it is an unusual c

Guillain-Barré syndrome following snake bite: An unusual complication.

A 40-year-old man presented with a nonhealing wound on the left ankle for the last 5 weeks, a tingling sensation in both hands for 20 days, and weakness in all four limbs for 10 days. He had been bitten by a snake while working in a sugarcane field 6 weeks earlier and had received tetanus toxoid and anti-snake venom on the day of the bite. He had clinical, biochemical, and electrophysiological features of Guillain-Barré syndrome, with motor and sensory neuropathy-primarily suggestive of demyelination with secondary axonal degeneration. Recognition of this unusual complication following snake b
