BACKGROUND: We report here the clinical and genetic features of KMT5B-related neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a novel heterozygous frameshift variant in KMT5B in a Chinese family.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old Chinese boy with mild-to-moderate intellectual disability, significant language impairment, motor disability, and coordination difficulties presented to our hospital because he "could not speak and did not look at others." He was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder previously owing to developmental delays in cognition, language expression, and understanding. The child also h

Vocal learning is a behavioral trait in which the social and acoustic environment shapes the vocal repertoire of individuals. Over the past century, the study of vocal learning has progressed at the intersection of ecology, physiology, neuroscience, molecular biology, genomics, and evolution. Yet, despite the complexity of this trait, vocal learning is frequently described as a binary trait, with species being classified as either vocal learners or vocal non-learners. As a result, studies have largely focused on a handful of species for which strong evidence for vocal learning exists. Recent s

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of complex neurodevelopmental disorders, characterized by a deficit in social interaction and communication. Many genetic variants are associated with ASD, including duplication of 7q11.23 encompassing 26-28 genes. Symmetrically, the hemizygous deletion of 7q11.23 causes Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), a multisystem disorder characterized by "hyper-sociability" and communication skills. Interestingly, deletion of four non-exonic mobile elements (MEs) in the "canine WBS locus" were associated with the behavioral divergence between the wolf and the dog

Asperger Syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, alongside the presence of unusually repetitive, restricted interests and stereotyped behaviour. Individuals with AS have no delay in cognitive and language development. It is a subset of Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC), which are highly heritable and has a population prevalence of approximately 1%. Few studies have investigated the genetic basis of AS. To address this gap in the literature, we performed a genome-wide pooled DNA association study to identify candidate

Misattributed paternity or 'false' paternity is when a man is wrongly thought, by himself and possibly by others, to be the biological father of a child. Nowadays, because of the progression of genetics and genomics the possibility of finding misattributed paternity during familial genetic testing has increased. In contrast to other medical information, which pertains primarily to individuals, information obtained by genetic testing and/or pedigree analysis necessarily has implications for other biologically related members in the family. Disclosing or not a misattributed paternity has a numbe

BACKGROUND: Newborn hearing screening is a physiologic screen to identify infants who may be deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and would benefit from early intervention. Typically, an infant who does not pass the newborn hearing screen is referred for clinical audiology testing, which may be followed by genetic testing to identify the etiology of an infant's DHH.
CONTENT: The current newborn hearing screening paradigm can miss mild cases of DHH or later-onset DHH, leaving a child at risk for unrecognized DHH, which could impact long-term language, communication, and social development. Genomic te

Loneliness and social isolation are important public health concerns due to their associations with a range of health outcomes. However, it is difficult to ascertain whether any effects are biased by confounding and reverse causation. We use a triangulation approach combining observational, sibling control, and Mendelian Randomisation analyses (a genetically informed analysis), to draw robust conclusions about these relationships. Using a combination of UK Biobank data (N = 8,004 to 414,432) and genome-wide association studies (N = 17,526 to 2,083,151), we examine relationships between lonelin

The Agotes are among the most enigmatic minority social groups in the Iberian Peninsula, historically subjected to long-standing social marginalization by their non-Agote neighbors. Nowadays, all Agotes live in the small town of Bozate (Baztan valley, Navarra, Spain), but their origins remain disputed, with different hypotheses. In this study, we analyze genome-wide genotype data from 125 newly sampled individuals from Bozate, the Baztan valley, and Navarra. Our findings indicate that the Agotes have a local genetic origin and exhibit high levels of homozygosity. Their isolation is likely due

The genome of Drosophila melanogaster includes homologs to approximately one-third of the currently known human disease genes. Flies and humans share many biological processes, including the principles of information processing by excitable neurons, synaptic transmission, and the chemical signals involved in intercellular communication. Studies on the molecular and behavioral impact of genetic risk factors of human neuro-developmental disorders [autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, and Tourette syndrome] increasingly use the well-studied s

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by general impairment in socialization, stereotypical behavior, defective adaptation to the social context usually without intellectual disability, and some high functioning areas related to memory and mathematics. Clinical criteria are not well defined and the etiology is heterogeneous and mostly unknown. Like in typical autism spectrum disorders (ASD), the genetic background plays a crucial role in AS, and often an almost mendelian segregation can be observed in some families. We performed a whole exome sequencing (WE

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic represents a modern-day plague that has not only resulted in a tragic loss of people from a wide spectrum of society but has reshaped our viewpoints regarding health care, the treatment of infectious diseases, and social issues regarding sexual behavior. There is little doubt now that the cause of the disease AIDS is a virus known as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The HIV virus is a member of a large family of viruses termed retroviruses, which have as a hallmark the capacity to convert their RNA genome into a DNA form that then u

Pasteurella multocida is one of the most frequently isolated bacteria in acute pneumonia cases, being responsible for high mortality rates in Peruvian young alpacas, with consequent social and economic costs. Here we report the genome sequence of P. multocida strain UNMSM, isolated from the lung of an alpaca diagnosed with pneumonia, in Peru. The genome consists of 2,439,814 base pairs assembled into 82 contigs and 2,252 protein encoding genes, revealing the presence of known virulence-associated genes (ompH, ompA, tonB, tbpA, nanA, nanB, nanH, sodA, sodC, plpB and toxA). This essay explores how testing for common and complex or genomic, as opposed to genetic, susceptibility to deep vein thrombosis both challenges and consolidates old social discourses on genes, gender and pregnancy. The nexus between genetics and reproduction usually crystallizes in the moral dilemma of selective termination. This essay examines online discussion among women with a genomic predisposition to deep vein thrombosis, which is associated with miscarriage and stillbirth. It explores the women's exchanges on what to 'do' in order to safely carry to term a foetus, which may always also

This study explores community perspectives on operationalizing ethical values in genomic research involving individuals with low grade glioma (LGG) brain tumors - a condition in which genomic characterization is central to diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. We conducted qualitative directed content analysis of data generated in the course of 11 facilitated engagement discussions conducted via a research advisory council and established brain tumor communities on social media with LGG genomic research community members-including patients, care partners, clinicians, and researchers. BACKGROUND: Nosocomial healthcare worker (HCW) SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks are well recognized. Contact tracing, use of surgical masks, hand hygiene and social distancing can prevent spread. Social and behavioral factors play an important role in outbreak control. We provide an integrated report on management of our first outbreak and lessons learned.
METHODS: Demographic and test result information was extracted from the outbreak report. Infection control practices were audited using a standardized behavior assessment tool. Exposure risk was ascertained using World Health Organization definitions.

The analysis of the genomic architecture of selection can be insightful for the understanding of sexual conflict and sexual selection acting in wild populations. In general, there will be a wide range of possible targets of selection in the reproductive system of sexually promiscuous species. In the context of a dynamic conflict, selection is expected to be predominantly recurrent and it might be best investigated by combining population-level and phylogenetic approaches on multiple species. First, we used population-based methods to scan for recent selection in the socially polygynous pectora

BackgroundSexual and gender minority (SGM) patients face disparities in cancer care, partly due to the lack of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data collection. We sought to use electronic health record-based metrics, integrated with SOGI data to characterize the SGM cancer population with the future goal of addressing disparities within this population.MethodsThe cancer population was identified using Epic's active cancer registry at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Additional data elements linked included SOGI information, general demographics, alcohol and drug use, molecul

Socioeconomic status (SES) and education (EDU) are phenotypically associated with psychiatric disorders and behaviours. It remains unclear how these associations influence genetic risk for psychopathology, psychosocial factors and EDU and/or SES (EDU/SES) individually. Using information from >1 million individuals, we conditioned the genetic risk for psychiatric disorders, personality traits, brain imaging phenotypes and externalizing behaviours with genome-wide data for EDU/SES. Accounting for EDU/SES significantly affected the observed heritability of psychiatric traits, ranging from 2.44% h

This article is an overview of the literature on Asperger's syndrome and schizophrenia and aim to discuss their similarities and differences. Eugen Bleuler who associated the terms "schizophrenia" and "autism" a century ago, viewed autism as a form of solitude of schizophrenic patients representing withdrawal from reality. Ever since, there has been confusion as to the boundaries between these conditions. Nowadays recent research, from a variety of perspectives-genomics, neurodevelopment, psychiatry, etc. has given new information on these conditions. It is easier to demarcate these two disord
