Variation in social feeding behavior and interactions among Caenorhabditis nematodes.

The ability to respond to complex stimuli and environmental cues is essential for organisms to survive and reproduce. Responding to a wide range of stimuli requires a neuronal network that can integrate cues and execute behavioral responses. Evolution of behaviors occurs ubiquitously in most established ecological niches, even among closely related species. To uncover the genetic and neuronal drivers of evolving behaviors, we have taken advantage of the large and relatively ancient divergence in the Caenorhabditis genus to ask how different Caenorhabditis nematodes respond to environmental sti

The use of technology for social interaction by people with dementia: A scoping review.

People with dementia (PwD) are at risk of experiencing loneliness, which is associated with physical and mental health difficulties [1]. Technology is a possible tool to increase social connection and reduce loneliness. This scoping review aims to examine the current evidence regarding the use of technology to reduce loneliness in PwD. A scoping review was carried out. Medline, PsychINFO, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane database, NHS Evidence, Trials register, Open Grey, ACM Digital Library and IEEE Xplore were searched in April 2021. A sensitive search strategy was constructed using combinations of

Therapist and Client Interactions in Motivational Interviewing for Social Anxiety Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study is to assess the bidirectional associations between therapist and client speech during a treatment based on motivational interviewing (MI) for social anxiety disorder. METHOD: Participants were 85 adults diagnosed with social anxiety who received MI prior to entering cognitive behavioral therapy. MI sessions were sequentially coded using the Motivational Interviewing Skill Code 2.5. RESULTS: Therapist MI-consistent behaviors, including open questions as well as positive and negative reflections, were more likely to be followed by client change explorat

Autism in Action: Reduced Bodily Connectedness during Social Interactions?

Autism is a lifelong disorder, defined by deficits in social interactions and flexibility. To date, diagnostic markers for autism primarily include limitations in social behavior and cognition. However, such tests have often shown to be inadequate for individuals with autism who are either more cognitively able or intellectually disabled. The assessment of the social limitations of autism would benefit from new tests that capture the dynamics of social initiative and reciprocity in interaction processes, and that are not dependent on intellectual or verbal skills. New entry points for the deve…

Infant twins' social interactions with caregivers and same-age siblings.

The study of twin behavior offers the opportunity to study differential patterns of social and communicative interactions in a context where … erved each other's toy play, or were unengaged. These results demonstrate that adult scaffolding of social interactions supports increased communicative bids even in a context where both familiar peers and adults are available as communicative partners.

Descriptive and injunctive social norms' interactive role in gambling behavior.

Social norms have a fundamental impact on behavior, yet little research has examined social norms regarding gambling and no research has examined possible interaction effects. The current study examined the interaction between perceived approval of gambling by others (i.e., injunctive norms) and perceived prevalence of gambling by others (i.e., descriptive norms) on the respondent's gambling frequency and problems, in a sample of relatively frequent gamblers. The current study examined 2 distinct reference groups: 1 close in proximity (i.e., family and friends) and 1 distally located (i.e., ot

Functional analysis of inappropriate social interactions in students with Asperger's syndrome.

We analyzed the inappropriate social interactions of 3 students with Asperger's syndrome whose behavior was maintained by social positive reinforcement. We tested whether inappropriate social behavior was sensitive to social positive reinforcement contingencies and whether such contingencies could be reversed to increase the probability of socially appropriate responding. Our results show that social positive reinforcers can be identified for inappropriate social interactions and that appropriate social behaviors can be sensitive to reinforcement contingency reversals.

Emulation and mimicry for social interaction: a theoretical approach to imitation in autism.

The "broken-mirror" theory of autism argues that dysfunction of the "mirror neuron system" is a root cause of social disability in autism. The present paper aims to scrutinize this theory and, when it breaks down, to provide an alternative. Current evidence suggests that children with autism are able to understand and emulate goal-directed actions, but may have specific impairments in automatic mimicry of actions without goals. These data are not compatible with the broken-mirror theory, but can be accounted for by a new model called EP-M. The EP-M model segments the mirror neuron system into

Dynamic interactions among badgers: implications for sociality and disease transmission.

1. Direct interactions between individuals play an important part in the sociality of group-living animals, their mating system and disease transmission. Here, we devise a methodology to quantify relative rates of proximity interaction from radio-tracking data and highlight potential asymmetries within the contact network of a moderate-density badger population in the north-east of England. 2. We analysed radio-tracking data from four contiguous social groups, collected over a 3-year period. Dynamic interaction analysis of badger dyads was used to assess the movement of individuals in relation

Attentional focus in social anxiety disorder: potential for interactive processes.

The two preeminent cognitive behavioral models of social anxiety [Clark, D.M., & Wells, A., (1995). A cognitive model of social phobia. However, Clark and Wells assert that socially anxious persons attend

Interactive effect of substance abuse and depression on adolescent social competence.

This study explored the interactive effect of substance abuse and depression on social competence among 106 adolescent inpatients (57% female, 86% Caucasian). Substance abuse and depression were conceptualized using dimensional ratings of illness severity based on adolescent interviews, whereas social competence was conceptualized using parent ratings of adolescent behavior. Cross-sectional analyses revealed that substance abuse and depression had a negative interactive effect on adolescent social competence: Higher severity levels of both dimensions were associated with lower levels of compet

Breaking the cycle of stigmatization: managing the stigma of incontinence in social interactions.

Incontinence is a highly stigmatizing condition. This article explores the dynamics of stigmatization in interpersonal interactions from the perspective of both individuals who are stigmatized and individuals who are not stigmatized. When people who are stigmatized and nonstigmatized interact with each other, both experience threats to self-esteem, but for different reasons. Individuals who are stigmatized may experience self-esteem decrements because they feel that their group is devalued in the eyes of others. Those who are nonstigmatized may fear that their actions will be perceived as bias

Social interactions and peer perceptions of young physically abused children.

14 3-6-year-old children with a history of physical abuse and a closely matched comparison group of 14 nonabused children, all of whom had b … s more behaviorally disturbed. Overall, results indicated that abused children experience disturbed social interactions outside the home environment, despite involvement in a day-care setting that provides alternative peer and adult role models.

The temporal relationships between social motivation and social interactions in people with serious mental illness and recent homelessness.

BACKGROUND: People with serious mental illness (SMI) and those who have experienced homelessness have disrupted social functioning. A primary obstacle to successful social functioning is building and maintaining meaningful social connections, which may depend on individuals' motivation to engage in social interactions. AIMS: We examined the temporal, bidirectional relationships between social approach and avoidance motivation and social interactions over time using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). METHODS: Twenty-nine participants with SMI and a history of homelessness answered EMA sur…

Measuring the experience of social connection within specific social interactions: The Connection During Conversations Scale (CDCS).

Decades of research have demonstrated that social connection is fundamental to health and well-being. The benefits of connection are observed with both close and distant others, within both new and established relationships, and even with exchanges that unfold over a relatively short timeframe. Because social connection is fundamental to well-being, many existing measures in the literature aim to assess either a global sense of connection or partner-specific (relationship-specific) connection. What is missing are measures of connection felt in specific social interactions or conversations. In …

Depersonalization and derealization in embarrassing social interactions: an experience sampling study in social phobia, major depression and controls.

OBJECTIVE: The study explored the duration and frequency of depersonalization (DP) and derealization (DR) in embarrassing social interactions in the everyday life of individuals with social phobia (SP), major depressive disorder (MDD) and controls. METHODS: Experience sampling was used (seven days, five surveys per day). A total of N = 165 patients (n = 47 SP, n = 118 MDD) and n = 119 controls were included. DP/DR were assessed whenever an interaction has been indicated as embarrassing. RESULTS: Individuals with SP and MDD experienced more embarrassing social interactions than controls and, …

Toddler EEG power reflects behavioral social engagement state during naturalistic parent-child interaction.

Social engagement is a critical process for children's language and social development and is altered in neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism. Although previous EEG studies have investigated correlates of children's social development in closely controlled experimental studies, few studies have examined how the brain reflects meaningful behavioral states, such as social engagement, within naturalistic parent-child interaction. This study collected EEG from typically developing toddlers of varying language ability and their parent (n = 49, 24-44 months) during the Social EEG paradigm; d

Short-term dynamic changes in interbrain synchrony during first social interaction between strangers.

Emerging evidence highlights the role of interbrain synchrony in fostering the formation of relationships. Yet a key question remains: how does interbrain synchrony dynamically evolve throughout a first meeting between strangers, and to what extent do interbrain networks exhibit dynamic changes during the interaction? In this study, we investigate short-term changes in behavioral and interbrain synchrony during initial face-to-face encounters between strangers. To assess experience-dependent changes in interbrain synchrony, we tracked these dynamics with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (

Assessing vision and autism spectrum disorder-relevant social interaction phenotypes in Dscam mice.

Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule (DSCAM) is an immunoglobulin-superfamily cell-adhesion molecule important for neuronal survival, morphogenesis, synaptic specificity, and particularly retinal organization. Pathogenic variants in Dscam have been linked to developmental disorders including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down Syndrome (DS), developmental delays and intellectual disabilities. Here we work to better understand the link between morphology and function in the nervous system by assessing the effects of Dscam mutations on both visual and ASD-relevant social interaction behaviors. …
