Predicting educational and social-emotional outcomes in emerging adulthood from intelligence, personality, and socioeconomic status.

Emerging adulthood describes the developmental life stage between adolescence and adulthood, when young people gain important educational and social-emotional skills. Here, we tested to what extent intelligence and personality traits in adolescence, family socioeconomic status (SES), and their interplay predict educational (e.g., educational attainment, degree classification) and social-emotional outcomes (e.g., well-being, volunteering, substance use) in emerging adulthood in a U.K.-representative sample (N = 2,277). Intelligence, personality traits, and family SES accounted together for up t

Physical activity and analogue anxiety disorder symptoms and status: Mediating influence of social physique anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Associations between physical activity (PA) and subclinical anxiety disorder symptoms and status, and potential mediating effect of social physique anxiety (SPA), remain understudied. We examined associations between PA and analogue Generalized Anxiety Disorder (AGAD), analogue Social Anxiety Disorder (ASAD), and analogue Panic Disorder (APD) symptoms and status, the mediating effect of SPA, and sex-related differences. METHODS: Participants (n = 470, 23.2 ± 4.8 years, 298 female) completed the Psychiatric Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire, seven-day PA recall, and Social Physiqu

Maternal social status, early health capital, and young adults' economic attainment: Early life course investigation.

Using survey data collected from 12,278 adolescents and their mothers over 13 years in a nationally representative National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study examined how maternal social status influenced young adults' economic attainment over the early life course. We found that weight at birth and height at adolescence as early health capital mediated the influence of maternal social status on young adults' economic attainment. Also, adolescents' educational attainment and psychological vulnerabilities mediated the relation between early health capital and young adults' eco…

Employment status, social function decline and caregiver burden among stroke survivors. A South Indian study.

UNLABELLED: Stroke leaves at least 60% of the survivors with moderate to severe disability limiting their employment status and social functioning leading to high levels of caregiver burden. AIM: We sought to study the employment status and level of change of social functioning of stroke survivors and their principal caregiver and correlate it with severity of stroke, functional disability, and anxiety and depression scores. METHODS: One hundred and fifty stroke survivors and principal caregivers (3 months-2 years post-stroke) were recruited for the study. The employment status pre- and post

Social support, socio-economic status, health and abuse among older people in seven European countries.

BACKGROUND: Social support has a strong impact on individuals, not least on older individuals with health problems. A lack of support network and poor family or social relations may be crucial in later life, and represent risk factors for elder abuse. This study focused on the associations between social support, demographics/socio-economics, health variables and elder mistreatment. METHODS: The cross-sectional data was collected by means of interviews or interviews/self-response during January-July 2009, among a sample of 4,467 not demented individuals aged 60-84 years living in seven Europe

Social status predicts how sex steroid receptors regulate complex behavior across levels of biological organization.

Social status strongly affects behavior and physiology, in part mediated by gonadal hormones, although how each sex steroid acts across levels of biological organization is not well understood. We examine the role of sex steroids in modulating social behavior in dominant (DOM) and subordinate (SUB) males of a highly social fish, Astatotilapia burtoni. We first used agonists and antagonists to each sex steroid receptor and found that androgens and progestins modulate courtship behavior only in DOM, whereas estrogens modulate aggressive behavior independent of social status. We then examined the…

Impact of Socioeconomic Status and Social Deprivation on Postoperative Outcomes After Anatomic Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA) is the preferred treatment for patients with glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA) who have an intact rotator cuff experiencing limited range of motion (ROM) and/or pain unrelieved by nonsurgical care. This study evaluates the impact of socioeconomic status (SES) and social determinants of health (SDOH) on outcomes after aTSA. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study analyzed patients who underwent aTSA for GHOA between 2017 and 2021. Patients were grouped by zip code-based income and social deprivation using definitions from the D

Prevalence and social determinants of self-reported health status among reproductive age women in Nepal.

PURPOSE: The self-reported health status (SRHS) is a subjective evaluation of an individual's health and has been connected to mortality and future health outcomes in numerous studies. However, the determinants of SRHS among women in Nepal remain largely unclear. In Nepal, traditional gender norms often result in women bearing greater responsibilities in terms of household chores, child-rearing, and taking care of elderly family members, all of which may potentially contribute to lower self-perceived health. Therefore, this study aims to identify the factors influencing SRHS among women in Nep

Status and Influencing Factors of Social Media Addiction in Chinese Workers: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media addiction (SMA) caused by excessive dependence on social media is becoming a global problem. At present, most of the SMA studies recruit college students as research participants, with very few studies involving workers and other age groups, especially in China. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the current status of SMA among Chinese workers and analyze its influencing factors. METHODS: From November 1, 2022, to January 30, 2023, we conducted an anonymous web-based questionnaire survey in mainland China, and a total of 5176 participants completed the questio

Physical, mental and social status after COVID-19 recovery in Nepal: A mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: Nepal has been devastated by an unprecedented COVID-19 outbreak, affecting people emotionally, physically, and socially, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Approximately 10% of COVID-19 affected people have symptoms that last more than 3-4 weeks and experience numerous symptoms causing an impact on everyday functioning, social, and cognitive function. Thus, it is vital to know about the recovered patient's health status and undertake rigorous examinations to detect and treat infections. Hence, this study aims to assess the health status of COVID-19 post-recovery pati

Differential relationships between social adversity and depressive symptoms by HIV status and racial/ethnic identity.

OBJECTIVE: Historically marginalized groups are likely to be exposed to social adversity, which predicts important mental health outcomes (e.g., depression). Despite the well-established relationship between adversity and poor health, few studies have examined how adversity differentially predicts mental health among people living with multiple, co-occurring marginalized identities or statuses. The current study fills this gap by examining whether relationships between social adversity and depressive symptoms differed between those living with or without a stigmatized disease (i.e., HIV) and/o

Pain, functional status, social function and conditions of habitation in elderly unilateraly lower limb amputees.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Few authors are involved in home rehabilitation of amputees or their reintegration into the community. It has been remarked that there is a discontinuity between the phases of the amputee rehabilitation in Serbia. The aim of the study was to establish pain characteristics and functional status of amputees two months after the amputation and to determine their social function and the conditions of their habitation. METHODS: This prospective observation study involved 38 elderly amputees with unilateral lower limb amputations. The patients were tested at the hospital on discharg

[Outcome after Guillain-Barré syndrome: comparison of motor function status and changes in social life].

Effects on the motor function and social life of the patients after Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) were studied. A letter of inquiry was sent to the patients in November 2001; 98 patients responded validly. The questionnaire had questions with 3 possible answers related to situations at work, at home, and about leisure activities. The Hughes functional grade, which evaluates physical conditions, and arm disability scale scores were assessed. Although the assessments showed good recovery in most patients who had had a job, 31% had to quit work, and 17% had to discontinue their leisure activities

Social engagement and depressive symptoms in Korean older adults: The potential moderating role of employment status.

BACKGROUND: Social engagement is known to alleviate depressive symptoms among older adults, and continued employment in later life may serve as a key mechanism for sustaining social engagement. However, the impact of employment on mental health can vary depending on job quality and socioeconomic conditions. This study aims to examine the association between social engagement, employment status, and depressive symptoms among older adults in South Korea. METHODS: This study utilized data from the Korea Community Health Survey conducted biennially from 2017 to 2023, excluding 2021. The analytic

Mediation of Latinx health status disparities during the COVID-19 pandemic by social determinants of health.

PURPOSE: The hypothesis that health status disparities exist because of high levels of social disadvantages, the Social Determinants of Health - Health Disparities (SDOH-HD) hypothesis by Ramírez García [1], was investigated among adults (N = 1,833) attending SARS-CoV-2 testing events at 71 community sites. METHODS: A Multilevel Structural Equation Model (CFI = 1.0, SRMRs ≤ 0.03), with cross-sectional self-reported data, operationalized health status with latent individual level and latent community site level variables. At the individual level, health variables met full or partial metric equ

Foster Care Status as an Understudied Social Driver of Health Outcomes for Children Needing Cardiac Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Children and youth in foster care (CYFC) are known to have greater health care needs than children not in foster care; however, little is known about the outcomes among those with heart disease. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study included patients (<18 years) who underwent cardiac surgery between 2017 and 2022. CYFC were identified using institutional medical records. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes were compared with non-CYFC. Generalized linear models assessed associations with long-term mortality, readmissions, and cumulative hospital days, ad

Developmental trajectories of non-suicidal self-injury in adolescence: The effect of social support and socioeconomic status.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in early adolescence has been amply documented. However, there has been little research on the progression of NSSI over time. Most studies have focused on the risk factors for NSSI, with less attention devoted to understanding the role of protective factors. This paper aimed to expand existing knowledge about the development of NSSI, with an emphasis on the impacts of protective factors such as social support and socioeconomic status (SES). METHODS: A total of 436 adolescents completed self-report surveys that addressed social support including frie
