Movement Disorders Society Scientific Issues Committee report: SIC Task Force appraisal of clinical diagnostic criteria for Parkinsonian disorders.

As there are no biological markers for the antemortem diagnosis of degenerative parkinsonian disorders, diagnosis currently relies upon the presence and progression of clinical features and confirmation depends on neuropathology. Clinicopathologic studies have shown significant false-positive and false-negative rates for diagnosing these disorders, and misdiagnosis is especially common during the early stages of these diseases. It is important to establish a set of widely accepted diagnostic criteria for these disorders that may be applied and reproduced in a blinded fashion. This review summa

A revised classification of von Willebrand disease. For the Subcommittee on von Willebrand Factor of the Scientific and Standardization Committee of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

A simplified phenotypic classification of von Willebrand disease is proposed that is based on differences in pathophysiology. Quantitative defects are divided into partial deficiency (type 1) and severe deficiency (type 3). Qualitative defects (type 2) are divided into four subcategories. Type 2A refers to variants with decreased platelet-dependent function associated with the loss of high-molecular weight VWF multimers. Type 2B refers to variants with increased affinity for platelet glycoprotein Ib. Type 2M refers to qualitatively abnormal variants with decreased platelet-dependent function n

Critical Care Management of Patients After Cardiac Arrest: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association and Neurocritical Care Society.

The critical care management of patients after cardiac arrest is burdened by a lack of high-quality clinical studies and the resultant lack of high-certainty evidence. This results in limited practice guideline recommendations, which may lead to uncertainty and variability in management. Critical care management is crucial in patients after cardiac arrest and affects outcome. Although guidelines address some relevant topics (including temperature control and neurological prognostication of comatose survivors, 2 topics for which there are more robust clinical studies), many important subject ar

Communication from the Scientific Standardization Committees of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis on vascular endothelium-related biomarkers in disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is not a disease criterion but a pathomechanistic process that accompanies various underlying diseases. According to the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis definition, endothelial injury is an essential component in addition to systemic coagulation activation. Despite this definition, current diagnostic criteria for DIC do not include biomarkers for vascular endothelial injury. Endothelial cells are critical for hemostatic regulation because they produce various antithrombotic substances and express anticoagulant factors at the same

Nutrition, Obesity, and Cachexia in Patients With Heart Failure: A Consensus Statement from the Heart Failure Society of America Scientific Statements Committee.

Dietary guidance for patients with heart failure (HF) has traditionally focused on sodium and fluid intake restriction, but dietary quality is frequently poor in patients with HF and may contribute to morbidity and mortality. Restrictive diets can lead to inadequate intake of macronutrients and micronutrients by patients with HF, with the potential for deficiencies of calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, thiamine, vitamins D, E, and K, and folate. Although inadequate intake and low plasma levels of micronutrients have been associated with adverse clinical outcomes, evidence supporting therapeutic r

Ovarian and adipose tissue dysfunction in polycystic ovary syndrome: report of the 4th special scientific meeting of the Androgen Excess and PCOS Society.

Significant advances have been made in our understanding of ovarian dysfunction in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and alterations in adipose tissue function are likely to play an important role in its pathophysiology. This review highlights the principal novel concepts presented at the 4th special scientific meeting of the Androgen Excess and PCOS Society, "Ovarian and Adipose Tissue Dysfunction: Potential Roles in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome," which occurred on June 6, 2008 in San Francisco, California.

Cardioneuroablation for the treatment of reflex syncope and functional bradyarrhythmias: A Scientific Statement of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) of the ESC, the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS) and the Latin American Heart Rhythm Society (LAHRS).

Cardioneuroablation has emerged as a potential alternative to cardiac pacing in selected cases with vasovagal reflex syncope, extrinsic vagally induced sinus bradycardia-arrest or atrioventricular block. The technique was first introduced decades ago, and its use has risen over the past decade. However, as with any intervention, proper patient selection and technique are a prerequisite for a safe and effective use of cardioneuroablation therapy. This document aims to review and interpret available scientific evidence and provide a summary position on the topic.

Rational application of the ESPGHAN 2022 recommendations for the follow-up of the paediatric coeliac patient: consensus document of scientific societies (SEGHNP, AEPAP, SEPEAP, SEEC, AEG, SEPD, SEMFYC, SEMG and SEMERGEN).

Coeliac disease is a common condition for which the only current treatment is a gluten-free diet. Adherence to this diet is not always easy and is associated with a reduction in quality of life for the patient and their family. Non-adherence is associated with complications of varying severity. The lack of control at the outpatient care level in a high percentage of these patients evinces the need to improve follow-up protocols and the approach to care delivery with coordination of paediatric gastroenterology units (PGU) and primary care paediatricians. With this aim in mind, the present docum

[Specialist clinics - definition: proposal for the discussion from the ad hoc committee on care structures by the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF) for the reform of hospital care].

Three-dimensional echocardiography in adults with congenital heart disease: a scientific statement of the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Adult Congenital Heart Disease and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging of the European Society of Cardiology.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common inborn defect affecting up to 1% of newborns. The prevalence of CHD has shifted from childhood to adulthood, and the number of adult patients living with CHD continues to increase. This patient population presents unique challenges in diagnostic imaging and management due to complex underlying cardiac morphology, previous operations and interventions, and haemodynamic conditions. 3D echocardiography (3DE) has significantly improved our understanding of complex anatomic and haemodynamic substrates and emerged as a clinically useful tool that pro
