Assessment of occupational injuries among Addis Ababa city municipal solid waste collectors: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Collection of household waste is a job which requires repeated heavy physical activities such as lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing. Like many developing countries, in Ethiopia municipal solid waste is collected manually. Therefore, this study is aimed to assess the extent of occupational injuries and associated factors among solid waste collectors in Addis Ababa City. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 876 respondents sampled from 92 unions. A pre-tested structured questionnaire and observation check list were used to collect data. Crude odds ratio with 95%

A new method for municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) fly ash inertization, based on colloidal silica.

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) is a straightforward way to manage waste, however the disposal of process byproducts, mainly bottom and fly ash, is still a problem, because of their hazardous contents. Fly ash is a byproduct of many other processes that involve combustion to produce energy. In this paper we present and discuss a new method for MSWI fly ash inertization, mainly based on the use of colloidal silica as a stabilization agent for metals. In the patented procedure, fly ash of different provenance can be used to produce an inert and non-hazardous material, that can be reuse

DNA damage induced in human peripheral blood lymphocytes by industrial solid waste and municipal sludge leachates.

Exposure of humans to toxic compounds occurs mostly in the form of complex mixtures. Leachates, consisting of mixtures of many chemicals, are a potential risk to human health. In the present study, leachates of solid wastes from a polyfiber factory (PFL), an aeronautical plant (AEL), and a municipal sludge leachate (MSL) were assessed for their ability to induce DNA damage in human peripheral blood lymphocytes using the alkaline Comet assay. The leachates also were examined for their physical and chemical properties. Lymphocytes were incubated with 0.5-15.0% concentrations (pH range 7.1-7.4) o

Incidence of cancer among persons living near a municipal solid waste landfill site in Montreal, Québec.

The Miron Quarry municipal solid waste landfill site in Montreal, Québec, generates copious quantities of methane and other gases, including a rich mixture of volatile organic compounds, some of which are recognized or suspected human carcinogens. The site is the third largest in North America and is located in the center of a densely populated area. Using data from the Québec Tumour Registry, we conducted Poisson regression analyses to evaluate whether cancer incidence among persons who lived near the site was higher than expected. Potential exposure to ambient air pollutants from the site wa

Leaching Kinetics of Heavy Metals from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash: A Langmuir-Based Model.

Langmuir kinetics are widely used to describe adsorption processes. In this study, a novel leaching kinetic model based on Langmuir kinetics was developed to simulate the dynamic leaching behavior of heavy metals from fly ash. The initial conditions and equilibrium concentrations of the Langmuir-based model differ fundamentally between adsorption and leaching. The proposed model can be simplified to the conventional pseudo-first-order model under two limiting conditions but cannot be reduced to the pseudo-second-order model. Leaching experiments were conducted on two fly ash samples with Zn, P

Reducing and electron-transfer capacities of municipal solid waste compost-derived fulvic acid during structural evolution.

The reducing capacity (RC) and microbially mediated electron-transfer capacity (ETC) of compost-derived fulvic acid (FA) are closely related to its molecular structure and may influence Fe biogeochemical cycling. However, how these redox functions evolve with FA structure during composting remains poorly understood. Using Fe(III) as a prevalent environmental electron acceptor, this study innovatively quantified the reducing capacity(RC) and microbially mediated electron-transfer capacity(ETC) of FA throughout a full-scale municipal solid waste (MSW) composting process and linked these function

Comparative Strength Development and Microstructural Characteristics of Individual Industrial Solid Waste Systems Treated with Sodium Silicate.

Bulk industrial solid wastes are promising materials for clay stabilization, but the independent performance of different waste types under identical conditions remains insufficiently understood. In this study, fly ash (FA), coal gangue (CG), and ground-granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) were independently incorporated into a low-liquid-limit clay matrix treated with sodium silicate. Waste dosages of 10%, 15%, and 20% and curing ages of 3, 7, and 28 days were investigated using unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests. Representative 28-day specimens were further examined by X-ray diffrac

Mechanical Properties and Carbon Emission Characteristics of Loess Stabilized with Multi-Source Solid Waste Cementitious Materials.

To address the high carbon emissions generated during the production of cement, lime, and other traditional soil stabilizers and to promote the resource utilization of industrial solid waste, this study proposed a low-carbon loess stabilization scheme using tuff powder (TP), fly ash (FA), and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) activated by alkaline solutions to fully substitute conventional cement and lime. A series of macroscopic tests, including unconfined compressive strength, water immersion, and triaxial shear tests, were carried out on stabilized loess. Combined with microcharac

Valorization of dredged sludge into sustainable subgrade materials through a novel industrial solid waste-derived stabilizer.

The development of sustainable and cost-effective stabilizers is urgently needed for the valorization of dredged sludge from riparian and lakeside engineering construction. Conventional cement-based methods have high environmental footprints, while traditional alkali-activated systems relying on sodium silicate remain costly. This study replaces conventional alkali activator with a silica fume (SF)-based activator to develop a novel, eco-friendly stabilizer derived from industrial solid wastes (ISW) for stabilizing dredged sludge as sustainable subgrade material. The mechanical, microstructura

Long-Term Leaching Behavior of Organic and Inorganic Pollutants after Wet Processing of Solid Waste Materials.

The recycling of mineral materials is a sustainable and economical approach for reducing solid waste and saving primary resources. However, their reuse may pose potential risks of groundwater contamination, which may result from the leaching of organic and inorganic substances into water that percolates the solid waste. In this study, column leaching tests were used to investigate the short- and long-term leaching behavior of "salts", "metals", and organic pollutants such as PAHs and herbicides from different grain size fractions of construction & demolition waste (CDW) and railway ballast (RB

Characterization and comparison of gasification and incineration fly ashes generated from municipal solid waste in Singapore.

Slagging-gasification has received increasing attention as a municipal solid waste treatment technology. Compared with incineration, slagging-gasification can produce valuable syngas and generates by-products that can be easier reusable in different applications in some cases. Among these by-products, the gasification fly ash (GFA) is the only hazardous solid residue to be landfilled. To explore its potential recycling methods and maximize its recycling efficiency, the detailed physicochemical properties of GFA are crucial. This study conducted a comprehensive characterization of six GFA sampl

Microbial characteristics of municipal solid waste compost: Occupational and public health risks from surface applied compost.

Land application of MSW compost promotes the soil fertility and productivity, but there is concern about its chemical and microbial quality. Although, current microbial indicators of MSW compost are generally considered to be protective of human health, the use of these indicators doesn't adequately represent the presence of pathogens that might be more resistant to inactivation during composting process. This work aims evaluation of the microbial characteristics of MSW compost and estimation of the health risks associated with exposure to pathogens of potential concern in MSW compost. Althoug

Fate of heavy metals during molten salts thermal treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ashes.

Thermal treatment could effectively realize the detoxification of heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash through the approach of removal or stabilization process. To lower the operating temperature and suppress the evaporation of heavy metals, a molten salts (NaCl-CaCl2) thermal treatment method was proposed for the detoxification of heavy metals from MSWI fly ash at a relatively mild condition (600/800 °C). The fate of heavy metals during the heating process and their stabilization properties in the remained ash slag after molten salts thermal treatment were investi

Environmental quality monitoring and impact assessment of solid waste dumpsites in high altitude sub-tropical regions.

Solid Waste Management (SWM) in high altitude regions is critically phased because of the non-availability of suitable facilities for the treatment and handling of large quantities of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Open burning practices at hill slopes were noticed which affect the surrounding environment. Hence, it became essential to measure the environmental components around the dumpsites to examine the impacts and suggest new technological solutions. The pollution parameters were monitored in and around the dumpsites, and the data was analysed using statistical tools. The assessment of air
