BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with diverse non-motor symptoms, including sleep-related and somatoform disorders, but population-based evidence on their long-term risk after PD diagnosis remains limited.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide retrospective matched cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service National Sample Cohort (2012-2023). Individuals with incident PD (ICD-10 G20) were propensity score-matched 1:5 to controls. Incident sleep disorders (F51 or G47), somatoform disorders (F45), and a combined outcome were identified, and risks were evaluat…

BACKGROUND: Somatoform disorders have adverse health impacts but are excluded from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). This study aimed to present a proof of concept for quantifying the global prevalence and health burden of somatoform disorders measured in years of life with disability (YLDs).
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis estimating the global prevalence and burden of somatoform disorders. We searched PsycINFO, Embase, and PubMed for epidemiological surveys of the general population, published between Jan 1, 1980, and Feb 19, …

PURPOSE: Recent task-based fMRI studies have shown that Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorder (PSPD) patients demonstrated aberrant activity in a wide range of brain regions associated with sensation, cognition and emotion. However, these specific task-based studies could not clearly uncover the alterations in the spontaneous brain networks that were associated with the general pain-related symptoms in PSPD.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In the present study, 13 PSPD patients and 23 matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. Resting state and 3D structural imaging data were collected during magnetic

This study investigated the degree of brain functional impairment in persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) by examining changes in the patterns of brain functional hubs. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 21 PSPD patients with headache as the main symptom and 17 sex- and age-matched healthy controls. Degree centrality (DC) analysis as well as the connectivity among these hubs by functional connectivity (FC) analysis and Granger causality analysis (GCA) were performed to characterize abnormal brain networks in PSPD (Gaussian random field corrected: P < 0.0

The purpose of this study was to assess the discriminative capacity of the McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) or with facial pain disorder as somatoform disorder (referred to as "atypical facial pain") (FP). The MPQ was administered to 57 TMD and 34 FP patients. Weighted MPQ item scores, subscale Pain Rating Indexes (PRI), and total Pain Rating Index were tested for significant differences (Student's t-test), and the frequency of descriptor choice was also analyzed. Furthermore, the data were processed through two systems based on a counter

Using cases of dissociative disorder (n=50) and other DSM-IV diagnoses (n=50), a somatoform dissociation self-report questionnaire was developed and its capacity to function as a screening device for dissociative disorders was analysed. A list of 75 items was constructed which, according to clinical experience and expert judgement, could reflect instances of somatoform dissociation. Statistical analyses revealed the 20 best discriminating items. Stepwise forward logistic analysis detected five items which, as a group, provided optimal discrimination between the two groups. Although attachment theory has become an influential approach used for the study of mental disorders, hitherto little has been known about the relation of attachment to somatoform disorders. In this study 15 patients with a somatoform pain disorder were compared with 15 non-clinical control participants. Attachment representations were measured by the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). Compared to the control group, the patient group describes parental behavior as less loving and more rejecting, expresses more anger towards the mother, shows more signs of unresolved loss and trauma, and their i…

Fibromyalgia and tensional headache are two of the most prevalent functional disorders. Both seem to imply relationships with processes of the psychopathological sphere. However, they have been little studied since Psychiatry. This descriptive observational research work, with a consulting population of the Hospital "T. Álvarez" in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, focuses on certain psychiatric and psychological variables chosen for this purpose. The results are compared with those of a sample of patients diagnosed with Undifferentiated Somatoform Disorder, from the Mental Health service.

Persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) is a mental disorder un-associated with any somatic injury and can cause severe somatosensory and emotional impairments in patients. However, so far, the neuro-pathophysiological mechanism of the functional impairments in PSPD is still unclear. The present study assesses the difference in regional spontaneous activity between PSPD and healthy controls (HC) during a resting state, in order to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying PSPD. Resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging data were obtained from 13 PSPD patients and 23 age- and gend

Somatoform Disorders (SFMD) were recently described in Parkinson Disease (PD) and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB). The present paper updates the observations in our cohort of patients and further details clinical phenomenology. Of 3178 patients consecutively referred to our Institutions from 1999, 1572 subjects had neurodegenerative diseases and 1718 psychiatric disorders. After 2-9 years of follow up, 488 patients were labelled as PD, 415 as Alzheimer Disease, 162 as DLB, 48 as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, 48 as Multiple System Atrophy and 49 as Fronto-Temporal Dementia. The frequency of S…

INTRODUCTION: Chest pain, palpitations, and syncope are among the most common referrals to paediatric cardiology. These symptoms generally have a non-cardiac aetiology in children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate the rate of common psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents referred to the paediatric cardiology clinic with chest pain, palpitations, and syncope and the relationship between cardiological symptoms and psychiatric disorders.
METHODS: Children and adolescents aged 8-16 years who presented at the paediatric cardiology clinic with primary complaints o
