Correlating cytoarchitecture and function in cat primary somatosensory cortex: the challenge of individual differences.

Principles of organization for the primary somatosensory cortex are generalizations derived by examining data obtained in different individuals. The manner in which these data are combined influences the conclusions derived. We found the line representing the widest anteroposterior distance across the sigmoid gyrus to be a useful reference in the cat somatosensory cortex for combining and comparing electrophysiological and cytoarchitectonic data from different individuals when we constructed cytoarchitectonic and functional maps of the bank of the medial ansate sulcus; maps prepared from combi…

Uneven densities of corticopontine neurons in the somatosensory cortex: a quantitative experimental study in the cat.

By use of large injections in the pontine nuclei of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate, the distribution of corticopontine cells in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) was mapped quantitatively. The borders of the cytoarchitectonic areas 3a, 3b, 1 and 2, together constituting SI, were determined cyto- and myeloarchitectonically. Flat maps showing the distribution of labelled cells in SI were constructed. All labelled cells were confined to lamina V, and present in deep as well as superficial parts of this lamina. The size spectrum of the corticopontine cells seemed to enc…

Thalamic connections of three representations of the body surface in somatosensory cortex of gray squirrels.

The anatomical tracer, wheat germ agglutinin, was used to determine the connections of electrophysiologically identified locations in three architectonically distinct representations of the body surface in the somatosensory cortex of gray squirrels. Injections in the first somatosensory area, S-I, revealed reciprocal connections with the ventroposterior nucleus (VP), a portion of the thalamus just dorsomedial to VP, the posterior medial nucleus, Pom, and sometimes the ventroposterior inferior nucleus (VPI). As expected, injections in the representation of the face in S-I resulted in label in v…

Cutting a nerve of the hand alters the organization of digit maps in primary somatosensory cortex.

In non-human primates, forelimb nerve transection and repair alters the otherwise orderly and highly conserved organization of the digit maps in primary somatosensory cortex (S1). These same changes are presumed to occur in humans and to have meaningful implications for patient recovery. Here, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we map digit responses in 21 patients with surgically repaired hand nerves and 30 controls. In S1 contralateral to the repaired hand, digit map arrangement is systematically altered and response amplitudes are elevated. At the individual level, map organizatio…

Dynamic and Context-Dependent Modulation of Somatosensory Input in the Primate Primary Motor Cortex.

During voluntary movement, somatosensory input is attenuated, a phenomenon known as sensory gating, which may prevent the CNS from being overwhelmed by predictable afferent feedback not essential for motor control. In the cerebral cortex, sensory gating has been demonstrated in primary (S1) and higher-order sensory areas. The primary motor cortex (M1) is the major cortical output relay to the spinal cord and muscles, and proprioceptive feedback is crucial for shaping motor output. However, whether proprioceptive signals to M1 are attenuated during movement and, if so, for what functional purpo

Organization of the Perioral Representation of the Primary Somatosensory Cortex in Prairie Voles (Microtus ochrogaster).

INTRODUCTION: Prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) are one of the few mammalian species that are monogamous and engage in the biparental rearing of their offspring. Biparental care impacts the quantity and quality of care the offspring receives. The increased attention by the father may translate to heightened tactile contact the offspring receives through licking and grooming. METHODS: In the current study, we used electrophysiological multiunit techniques to define the organization of the perioral representation in the primary somatosensory area (S1) of prairie voles. Functional representat

Functional mapping of the somatosensory cortex using noninvasive fMRI and touch in awake dogs.

Dogs are increasingly used as a model for neuroscience due to their ability to undergo functional MRI fully awake and unrestrained, after extensive behavioral training. Still, we know rather little about dogs' basic functional neuroanatomy, including how basic perceptual and motor functions are localized in their brains. This is a major shortcoming in interpreting activations obtained in dog fMRI. The aim of this preregistered study was to localize areas associated with somatosensory processing. To this end, we touched N = 22 dogs undergoing fMRI scanning on their left and right flanks using a

Stimulus awareness is associated with secondary somatosensory cortex activation in an inattentional numbness paradigm.

While inattentional blindness and deafness studies have revealed neural correlates of consciousness (NCC) without the confound of task relev … fMRI data show that awareness of stimuli led to increased activation in the contralateral secondary somatosensory cortex. We found no significant effects of stimulus awareness in the primary somatosensory cortex or frontoparietal areas. Thus, our results support the hypothesis that somatosensory stimulus awareness is mainly based on activation in higher areas of the s …

Sex-Dependent Synaptic Remodeling of the Somatosensory Cortex in Mice With Prenatal Methadone Exposure.

Rising opioid use among pregnant women has led to a growing population of neonates exposed to opioids during the prenatal period, but how opioids affect the developing brain remains to be fully understood. Animal models of prenatal opioid exposure have discovered deficits in somatosensory behavioral development that persist into adolescence suggesting opioid exposure induces long lasting neuroadaptations on somatosensory circuitry such as the primary somatosensory cortex (S1). Using a mouse model of prenatal methadone exposure (PME) that displays delays in somatosensory milestone development, …

A continuum of invariant sensory and behavioral-context perceptual coding in secondary somatosensory cortex.

A crucial role of cortical networks is the conversion of sensory inputs into perception. In the cortical somatosensory network, neurons of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) show invariant sensory responses, while frontal lobe neuronal activity correlates with the animal's perceptual behavior. Here, we report that in the secondary somatosensory cortex (S2), neurons with invariant sensory responses coexist with neurons whose responses correlate with perceptual behavior. Importantly, the vast majority of the neurons fall along a continuum of combined sensory and categorical dynamics. Furtherm…

A Data-Driven Multi-scale Technique for fMRI Mapping of the Human Somatosensory Cortex.

A previously introduced Bayesian non-parametric multi-scale technique, called iterated Multigrid Priors (iMGP) method, is used to map the topographic organization of human primary somatosensory cortex (S1). We analyze high spatial resolution fMRI data acquired at ultra-high field (UHF, 7T) in individual subjects during vibrotactile stimulation applied to each distal phalange of the left hand digits using both a travelling-wave (TW) and event-related (ER) paradigm design. We compare the somatotopic digit representations generated in S1 using the iMGP method with those obtained using established…

Patterns of Dendritic Basal Field Orientation of Pyramidal Neurons in the Rat Somatosensory Cortex.

The study of neuronal dendritic orientation is of interest because it is related to how neurons grow dendrites to establish the synaptic input that neurons receive. The dendritic orientations of neurons in the nervous system vary, ranging from rather heterogeneously distributed (asymmetric) to homogeneously distributed (symmetric) dendritic arbors. Here, we analyze the dendritic orientation of the basal dendrites of intracellularly labeled pyramidal neurons from horizontal sections of Layers II-VI of the hindlimb somatosensory (S1HL) cortex of 14-d-old (P14) rats. We used circular statistics a

Effects of thalamic infarction on the structural and functional connectivity of the ipsilesional primary somatosensory cortex.

OBJECTIVES: To identify regions causally influenced by thalamic stroke by measuring white matter integrity, cortical volume, and functional connectivity (FC) among patients with thalamic infarction (TI) and to determine the association between structural/functional alteration and somatosensory dysfunction. METHODS: Thirty-one cases with TI-induced somatosensory dysfunction and 32 healthy controls underwent magnetic resonance imaging scanning. We reconstructed the ipsilesional central thalamic radiation (CTR) and assessed its integrity using fractional anisotropy (FA), assessed S1 ipsilesional

Pain and plasticity: is chronic pain always associated with somatosensory cortex activity and reorganization?

The somatosensory cortex remodels in response to sensory deprivation, with regions deprived of input invaded by neighboring representations. The degree of cortical reorganization is correlated with ongoing pain intensity, which has led to the assumption that chronic pain conditions are invariably associated with somatosensory cortex reorganization. Because the presentation and etiology of chronic pain vary, we determined whether cortical changes in human subjects are similar for differing pain types. Using functional and anatomical magnetic resonance imaging, we found that, while human patient…

Dynamic modulation of the primary somatosensory cortex during seeing and feeling a touched hand.

Previous work has demonstrated cross-modal links between vision and somatosensation at an early stage of sensory processing. Furthermore, recent behavioral studies have shown that viewing the stimulated body part can enhance tactile discrimination ability at the stimulated site. This study aims to investigate the role of the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) during visuotactile integration processes. Subjects looked at a hand in a video being touched on the first digit (D1) in synchrony with felt touches on their real hidden hand as compared with watching a video with asynchronous touches. Dur…

Hand/face border as a limiting boundary in the body representation in monkey somatosensory cortex.

Horizontal intracortical connections may form one substrate for representational plasticity in somatosensory cortex. Electrophysiological mapping demonstrated the finer details of the representations of the hand, lower jaw, neck, and face in area 3b of normal macaque monkeys. Injections of two fluorescent tracers then defined the extent to which horizontal connections crossed from the face into the hand representations and vice versa in area 3b. Connections are widely distributed within cortical representations of skin areas innervated by cervical nerves or by the trigeminal nerve but do not c…

Effects of prenatal exposure to ethanol on callosal projection neurons in rat somatosensory cortex.

The distribution and density of callosal projection neurons in the somatosensory cortex of mature rats was altered by prenatal exposure to ethanol. The density of callosal neurons was significantly greater in ethanol-treated rats than in controls. Ethanol exposure also altered the laminar distribution of callosal projection neurons. Whereas in control rats the cell bodies of callosal projection neurons were in layers II/III and V, in ethanol-treated rats most of these neurons were distributed in layers V and VI. Many of the ectopic neurons were generated toward the end of cortical neuronogenes…
