The "space-time continuum" is a theoretical framework in physics that removes the distinction between time and space and, instead, treats them as part of a seamless continuum. In this paper, I use it as the basis for a new approach to understanding the opportunities and challenges for low-income families through a focus on two key dimensions of family life: time and space. The spatial element refers to the physical proximity of family members and the temporal pertains to the duration of time in which family members maintain particular arrangements in response to economic shocks, health challen

Recent growth in space systems has seen increasing capabilities packed into smaller and lighter Earth observation and deep space mission spacecraft. Phase-change materials (PCMs) are nonvolatile, reconfigurable, fast-switching, and have recently shown a high degree of space radiation tolerance, thereby making them an attractive materials platform for spaceborne photonics applications. They promise robust, lightweight, and energy-efficient reconfigurable optical systems whose functions can be dynamically defined on-demand and on-orbit to deliver enhanced science or mission support in harsh envi

In the era of renewed space exploration, comprehending the effects of the space environment on human health, particularly for deep space missions, is crucial. While extensive research exists on the impacts of spaceflight, there is a gap regarding female reproductive risks. We hypothesize that space stressors could have enduring effects on female health, potentially increasing risks for future pregnancies upon return to Earth, particularly related to small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses. To address this, we identify a shared microRNA (miRNA) signature between SGA and the space environment, c

Past research in computational systems biology has focused more on the development and applications of advanced statistical and numerical optimization techniques and much less on understanding the geometry of the biological space. By representing biological entities as points in a low dimensional Euclidean space, state-of-the-art methods for drug-target interaction (DTI) prediction implicitly assume the flat geometry of the biological space. In contrast, recent theoretical studies suggest that biological systems exhibit tree-like topology with a high degree of clustering. As a consequence, emb

Community Advisory Boards (CABs), adopted from the HIV response, have become the most institutionalised form of community engagement in tuberculosis (TB) research. However, little work has examined the historical-political processes shaping their development or how these dynamics influence community participation in TB research governance. This qualitative study draws on 28 semi-structured interviews with TB advocates, community engagement practitioners, and TB CABs representatives across countries and levels of global health governance. Using the metaphor of "space" drawn from participatory d

Human hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) fitness declines following exposure to stressors that reduce survival, dormancy, telomere maintenance, and self-renewal, thereby accelerating aging. While previous National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) research revealed immune dysfunction in low-earth orbit (LEO), the impact of spaceflight on human HSPC aging had not been studied. To study HSPC aging, our NASA-supported Integrated Space Stem Cell Orbital Research (ISSCOR) team developed bone marrow niche nanobioreactors with lentiviral bicistronic fluorescent, ubiquitination-ba

Plans for the various missions in which men and women are expected to participate during the next 10 years are outlined. Such missions include flights of up to three months duration in low earth orbit as well as possible short excursions to geosynchronous orbit. Research activities are described which cover the full spectrum of physiological and psychological responses to space flight. These activities are shown to contribute to the ongoing Shuttle program and the future Space Station. The paper includes a summary of the major technical thrusts needed to support extended habitation in space.

BACKGROUND: As the world becomes increasingly urbanised, with projections of about two-thirds of a burgeoning population living in urban areas by 2050, several governments are continuously making efforts to create, maintain, and expand urban green spaces and enhance their ecological connectivity. However, the advantages of these green infrastructures are weighed down by their risk of higher human exposure to wildlife, zoonotic diseases, and wildlife-associated ectoparasites, leading to spillage of vector-borne illnesses. METHODS/DESIGN: The research study aims to examine the risk of acquiring

Space exploration objectives will soon move from low Earth orbit to distant destinations like Moon and Mars. The present work provides an up … oach from cells, molecules to neural circuits and cognitive performance. Finally, we highlight that space research in neurocognitive science goes beyond monitoring and mitigating risks in astronauts but could also have significant benefits for the population on Earth.

BACKGROUND: With the recent acceleration of manned space exploration, health care in space has become an important issue. Cardiovascular problems, mainly caused by the microgravity environment in space, include decreased red blood cell volume, myocardial atrophy and aerobic capacity, and reduced orthostatic tolerance after return. However, complete physiological countermeasures have not been established and more research is needed.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A search on PubMed was conducted for English-language articles on cardiovascular changes in space and their countermeasures and post return re

Background The urban environment presents significant health challenges for children, such as discouraging physical exercise and increasing exposure to air pollution, excessive noise and higher temperatures. Reducing exposures to these negative environmental factors can have great benefits on a child's well-being and lower their risk of developing chronic diseases later in life. There is increasing evidence that suggests that the presence of urban green space can offer benefits to human health and well-being. While studies have reported the impact green space exposure has on the individual hea

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) is increasingly applied in cyber-physical systems for automation tasks. It is important to record the developing trends in DRL's applications to help researchers overcome common problems using common solutions. This survey investigates trends seen within two applied settings: motor control tasks, and resource allocation tasks. The common problems include intractability of the action space, or state space, as well as hurdles associated with the prohibitive cost of training systems from scratch in the real-world. Real-world training data is sparse and difficult

Three Dimensional-magnetic resonance imaging of the inner ear endolymphatic space was performed in 100 control human subjects. Ear endolymphatic space was visualized using contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging with intravenous gadolinium injection. The images were acquired on a 3-tesla magnetic resonance scanner using a 32-channel array head coil for all patients. The ear endolymphatic space and total fluid space volumes of the inner ear, cochlea, and vestibule were measured, and the ear endolymphatic space in the cochlea and vestibule was classified into four categories. The cochlea ca

Research in neuroscience reveals that the brain constructs multiple representation of space. Here, we primarily focus on peripersonal space (PPS) representation, the region of space immediately surrounding our bodies and in which objects can be grasped and manipulated. We review convergent results from several generations of studies, including neurophysiological studies in animals, neuropsychological investigations in monkeys and brain-damaged patients with spatial cognition disorders, as well as recent neuroimaging experiments in neurologically normal individuals. Collectively, these studies

Orbital space enables many essential services, such as weather forecasting, global communication, navigation, Earth observation for environmental and agricultural management, and national security applications. Orbit use is increasingly defined by firms launching coordinated fleets-"constellations"-of satellites into low-Earth orbit. These firms operate in markets with few or no competitors, such as the market for broadband internet provision to rural areas. How will oligopolistic competition shape the allocation of orbital space? We analyze orbital-use patterns and economic welfare when two p

Several studies indicate that the noise generated by performing orthopedic surgery has the potential to cause hearing loss. Noise-induced hearing loss was found in 50% of the orthopedic surgeons studied using audiometric testing, with a greater incidence associated with years of practice. Noise produced by several orthopedic surgical instruments such as saws, drills, and hammers during surgery exceeds 100 dB, especially during knee replacement procedures. In one study, surgical space suits (personal protection systems) were suggested to help protect against noise-induced hearing loss, although

Space three dimension (3D) bioprinting provides a precise and bionic tumor model for evaluating the compound effect of the space environment on tumors, thereby providing insight into the progress of the disease and potential treatments. However, space 3D bioprinting faces several challenges, including prelaunch uncertainty, possible liquid leakage, long-term culture in space, automatic equipment control, data acquisition, and transmission. Here, a novel satellite-based 3D bioprinting device with high structural strength, small volume, and low weight (<6 kg) is developed. A microgel-based bipha

Future multi-year crewed planetary missions will motivate advances in aerospace nutrition and telehealth. On Earth, the Human Cell Atlas project aims to spatially map all cell types in the human body. Here, we propose that a parallel Human Cell Space Atlas could serve as an openly available, global resource for space life science research. As humanity becomes increasingly spacefaring, high-resolution omics on orbit could permit an advent of precision spaceflight healthcare. Alongside the scientific potential, we consider the complex ethical, cultural, and legal challenges intrinsic to the huma
