Exploring the impact of stuttering simulation-based learning and personality traits on clinical self-efficacy and professional interest among speech-language pathology students.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that participating in a stuttering simulation-based learning (SBL) program could help speech-language pathology (SLP) students feel more at ease, less nervous and more capable while interacting with people who stutter. Personality traits may influence SLP students' self-efficacy beliefs as well as their level of interest in working with clients who stutter. In particular, we suggest that the combination of low neuroticism and high extraversion, previously linked with a more outgoing, emotionally stable and social personality, may enhance self-efficacy. Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Framework to Achieve Interprofessional Functional Outcomes for Young Children: A Speech-Language Pathology Perspective.

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework is an excellent tool to facilitate the writing of functional goals for children who exhibit communication disorders and other developmental problems that require services from professionals in multiple therapeutic areas. The holistic view of children provides each professional with an approach that integrates how one's specific health conditions and contextual factors influence a child's functioning and participation in daily activities. This allows the interprofessional team to view the child as a person, r

A shift of treatment approach in speech language pathology services for children with speech sound disorders - a single case study of an intense intervention based on non-linear phonology and motor-learning principles.

Even though there are documented benefits of direct intensive intervention for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs), the intensity given at Swedish Speech Language Pathology services rarely exceeds once a week. Also, indirect therapy approaches are commonly employed. The purpose of the present case study was to investigate the effects of an intensive specialist therapy, based on non-linear phonological analysis and motor learning principles. The participant was a boy aged 4:10 years with severe SSD, who previously had received indirect therapy from age 3 with, very limited results. A si

"It's not everyday that parents get a chance to talk like this": Exploring parents' perceptions and expectations of speech-language pathology services for children with intellectual disability.

Tailoring the delivery of disability services to the preferences and requirements of service users allows for more effective partnerships. The aim of this research was to explore parents' perceptions and the expectations of their child's speech-language pathology (SLP) within an intellectual disability service. Parents of school-aged children with intellectual disability who received a SLP service in Ireland participated in the research: 17 parents participated in focus groups and 103 parents answered questionnaires. The core themes from the focus groups, which subsequently informed the questi

Applying the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health to speech-language pathology social communication interventions for autistic children and youth: A scoping review.

The World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) aligns with the neurodiversity paradigm in viewing autistic people's social communication holistically and in a strength-based manner. In this scoping review, we explored how social communication interventions for autistic children and youth map onto the domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health in the field of speech-language pathology. OVID Medline, OVID Embase, OVID PsycINFO and Web of Science databases were searched to identify relevant articles.

Immediate effects of straw phonation in air or water on the laryngeal function and configuration of female speech-language pathology students visualised with strobovideolaryngoscopy: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A promising way to obtain vocal economy and efficiency is by semi-occluding the vocal tract while phonating. Current knowledge about the immediate effects of semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) phonation on the laryngeal function and configuration is based mainly on computer modelling or excised larynges studies. In in vivo SOVT studies, electroglottography (EGG) has been the most commonly used laryngeal outcome, showing contradictory results between studies. Therefore, exploring these aspects by direct visualisation of the human larynx during SOVT phonation using strobovideolaryngosc

Optimal dose-response relationships in voice therapy.

Like other areas of speech-language pathology, the behavioural management of voice disorders lacks precision regarding optimal dose-response relationships. In voice therapy, dosing can presumably vary from no measurable effect (i.e., no observable benefit or adverse effect), to ideal dose (maximum benefit with no adverse effects), to doses that produce toxic or harmful effects on voice production. Practicing specific vocal exercises will inevitably increase vocal load. At ideal doses, these exercises may be non-toxic and beneficial, while at intermediate or high doses, the same exercises may a

Optimal intervention intensity for emergent literacy: what we know and need to learn.

In response to Baker (2012) unpacking critical components of optimal intervention intensity, this article explores what is currently known regarding intervention intensity for emergent literacy for children at risk for delays in this area of development. Studies specifically addressing intervention intensity related to phonological awareness and print knowledge suggest that more intensity does not always yield better results, and other factors suggested by Baker may influence the impact of intensity on children's outcomes. However, none of the research to date includes speech-language patholog

How much therapy is enough? The impossible question!

There is sufficient evidence in the literature related to speech-language pathology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and psychology to indicate that intensive therapy is required in order to influence the neurophysiological basis of various impairments. Conversely, the influence of therapy on reducing communication restriction, psychosocial impact, and well-being is less well documented in speech-language pathology, but research in related areas indicates that the amount of therapy required to have a positive influence on these areas is associated with a broad range of individual and soci
