In a prospective study of 302 adolescent players in three ball games (soccer, handball and basketball), 119 incurred injuries. The injury incidence (number of injuries per 1000 playing hours) was 5.6 in soccer, 4.1 in handball and 3.0 in basketball. Ankle sprains accounted for 25 per cent of the injuries, finger sprains 32 per cent, strains in the thigh and leg 10 per cent, and tendinitis/apophysitis 12 per cent. The most serious injuries were four fractures, one anterior cruciate ligament rupture, and two meniscus lesions. The most serious injuries, with the longest rehabilitation period, occ

BACKGROUND: Lateral ankle sprains often damage the anterior talofibular (ATFL) and calcaneofibular (CFL) ligaments. Delayed peroneal muscle reaction time (reaction-time) and reduced peroneal muscle strength (strength) may increase the risk of recurrent sprains. Relationships between neuromuscular impairments and ligament strains remain unclear due to challenges in directly measuring ligament strains under dynamic conditions.
HYPOTHESIS: Reaction-time and strength are correlated significantly with ATFL and CFL strains in people with and without chronic ankle instability (CAI).

The athlete's wrist is particularly prone to injury. Although many wrist injuries are dismissed as sprains or strains, a number of these injuries involve significant ligamentous damage that can lead to chronic carpal instability. A complete knowledge of the carpal ligamentous anatomy and classification of wrist instability patterns is necessary for the adequate diagnosis and treatment of these injuries.

Background Rugby is a popular contact sport played with little to no protective clothing. There exist few comprehensive studies investigating emergency department (ED) visit patterns for rugby-related injuries. We hypothesize that male athletes remain the most common patient demographic to present to the ED with rugby-related injuries and that the number of patients diagnosed with soft tissue injuries such as sprains and strains decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database was examined for rugby injuries from January 2012 throug…

External rotation of the foot has been implicated in high ankle sprains. Recent studies by this laboratory, and others, have suggested that torsional traction characteristics of the shoe-surface interface may play a role in ankle injury. While ankle injuries most often involve damage to ligaments due to excessive strains, the studies conducted by this laboratory and others have largely used surrogate models of the lower extremity to determine shoe-surface interface characteristics based on torque measures alone. The objective of this study was to develop a methodology that would integrate a mo

Soft tissue injury screening faces two main diagnostic challenges. One is the perceptual bias of the athlete in terms of referred pain and second injury assessment tools are not only in need of highly specialized personal but they are also financially demanding. Since ankle sprains is one of the leading soft tissue injuries, the current study was set to examine the suitability of functional infrared thermal imaging (fITI) in evaluating physiological alteration on the ankle as a result of exercise or injury. The current study consists of a case report of a patient with an ankle sprain and the b

Ankle sprains are generally the most common injuries that are frequently experienced by competitive athletes. Ankle sprains, which are the main cause of ankle instability, can impair long-term sports performance and cause chronic ankle instability (CAI). Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the key factors involved in repeated ankle strains is necessary. During jumping and landing, adaptation to the landing force and control of neuromuscular activation is crucial in maintaining ankle stability. Ankle mobility provides a buffer during landing, and peroneus longus activation inhibits ankle inv

CLINICAL SCENARIO: Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in athletics, and many lead to recurrent sprains, chronic ankle instability, and persistent symptoms. Treatment improvements are needed. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) involves formulating autologous plasma with higher platelet concentration to be injected in the desired tissue. There is currently high-quality evidence supporting the use of PRP with lateral epicondylitis and knee osteoarthritis to accelerate the healing process and decrease pain.
CLINICAL QUESTION: Does the injection of PRP relieve pain faster and improve functi
