To revisit many theories on fetal development of the manubrium of the sternum, we examined 25 mid-term fetuses at 6-9 weeks of gestation. The initial developmental stage of the manubrium was characterized by a distinct interclavicular mesenchyme that was continuous with the developing clavicles. Because parts of the clavicle in which endochondral ossification occurs originate from the neural crest, the interclavicular mesenchyme seems to be of the same origin. The surgical treatment experience of the funnel-like thoracic cage deformity in 60 children using the methods of their own and original instruments is presented. The fixative application is expedient in younger children and in elder it is possible to avoid it. In 93% of observations the positive result was achieved, and in 3.4% the deformity recurrencies were eliminated by means of reoperation. All the patients are alive.

The right-chest thoracoscopic surgery approach has become the preferred operation for the treatment of thymic disease. Due to the limited space in the anterior mediastinum, achieving en bloc resection of the tumor is a common difficulty. Here, we report a simple method to lift the sternum by single hook. This method has a lot of advantages, including providing a wide view of the anterior mediastinum for clear vision and being an easy operation.

We present a male patient with a facial haemangioma extending from the lower left lid to the malar region and the upper left lip. The patient also presents a 1 cm round cutaneous notch on the upper third of the sternum. There are not other physical anomalies. A 67-year-old patient suffered a fall and sustained injuries to the thorax, combined with fractures of the ribs, sternum and thoracic spine. Her pre-existing kyphosis (caused by osteoporotic vertebral collapse) increased in severity. Although pulmonary disability is usually minimal following total sternectomy, the potential for remote complications exists. We present a case of severe respiratory failure resulting from simple rib fractures occurring two years after sternectomy for sternal osteomyelitis. Respiratory failure resulted from flail chest due to the combination of acute rib fracture and the lack of anterior fixation of the thoracic cage.

Operations were performed on 20 children for Pectus excavatum in five years. 'Turn over' of the sternum was chosen as surgical approach. About five years have passed from those operations, and results still are better than those obtained from earlier methods based on stabilisation of the sternum.
