Chronic secondary mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus associated with hypertrophic pyloric stenosis has rarely been mentioned in the general medical literature. We report the case of a 2-month-old boy whose clinical symptoms, which included distension of the stomach and projectile vomiting, suggested the diagnosis of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis but who was later diagnosed with chronic secondary mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus. Sonographic examination revealed findings consistent with a rotated stomach, and subsequent plain chest radiography demonstrated a left diaphragmatic eventration. An upper

Acute gastric volvulus is an abnormal rotation of the stomach through 1800. This study illustrates a series of 8 patients who underwent operative treatment for acute gastric volvulus. Volvulus was primary in all the cases. Of the 8 patients, 6 had organo-axial (75%) and 2 mesenterio-axial (25%) volvulus. Anterior gastropexy (gastrostomy) was performed in all the cases. There was no mortality and all the patients are doing well after one-year follow up.

Gastric volvulus is a rare condition in which there is an abnormal rotation of the stomach, which can be life-threatening. Most cases occur in patients with a hiatal hernia or other diaphragmatic defects. Gastric volvulus after Nissen fundoplication has been rarely reported, with several proposed mechanisms. We present the case of a 53-year-old woman with a history of previous Nissen fundoplication who presented with nausea and vomiting due to a mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus caused by an adhesion. Adhesiolysis and volvulus reduction were performed, along with gastropexy. The postoperative co

Gastric volvulus is a rare cause of acute abdomen in children. Usually it is associated with defects such as diaphragmatic hernia, hiatal hernia, eventration, and paralysis of the diaphragm. We report an extremely rare case presenting with acute intractable vomiting and abdominal distention. Passage of a nasogastric tube relieved the symptoms. A history of the ingestion of a large bolus of chewing gum and a suboptimal contrast study were misleading, and there was a delay in diagnosis of 3 days. Later, repeat upper GI fluoroscopy with contrast medium identified mesenteroaxial volvulus of the st

Volvulus describes the twisting of the intestine or colon around its mesentery. Intestinal obstruction and/or ischaemia are the most common complications of volvulus. Within the gastrointestinal tract, there is a preponderance towards colonic volvulus. The sigmoid is the most commonly affected segment, followed by the caecum, small intestine and stomach. Distinguishing between the differing anatomical locations of gastrointestinal volvulus can be challenging, but is important for the management and prognosis. This article focuses on the main anatomical sites of gastrointestinal volvulus encoun

BACKGROUND: Gastric volvulus is an uncommon condition that affects mostly older men. It occurs mainly as a result of congenital laxity of the stomach's attachments and might be accompanied by a diaphragmatic hernia. This sometimes causes the stomach to herniate into the thorax, giving rise to respiratory compromise. A patient can have acute or chronic disease. We present our series of 14 patients who were managed with simple laparoscopic suture gastropexy.
METHODS: We managed 14 patients with gastric volvulus during the past ten years; 2 patients had primary type and 12 had secondary type gas

We describe the combined use of laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques in a case of acute primary gastric volvulus. Once the diagnosis is confirmed with a water-soluble upper gastrointestinal series, prompt intervention is required. With an atraumatic bowel grasper the stomach is re-oriented with the greater curvature in its normal anatomic position. Two transabdominal wall sutures are placed along the greater curvature to fix it to anterior abdominal wall. Upper endoscopy is then performed. Once confident that the gastric mucosa is viable, a 20F "pull-type" gastrostomy tube is placed endoscop

Gastric volvulus is a rare conditiom defined as an abnormal rotation of the stomach around itself. Acute gastric volvulus is a surgical emergency because it is a life-threatening condition, but its non-specific symptoms make diagnosis difficult. There are two types of gastric volvulus: organoaxial and mesentero-axial. The treatmet is surgical intervention. Computed tomography allows to identify and classify gastric volvulus and rule out complications so that to guide surgery management. We report a case of a mesentero-axial gastric volvulus in an old woman with abdominal pain, who underwent su

We describe a case of organoaxial gastric volvulus in which the axis was through the body of the stomach. The intraabdominal part of the volvulus was complicated by bleeding from two necrotic ulcers, one of which was perforated by the tip of a nasogastric tube.

Gastric volvulus is a life threatening condition characterized by an abnormal rotation of the stomach around an axis. Although the first line treatment of this disorder is surgical, we report here a case of gastric volvulus that was endoscopically managed using a novel strategy. An 83-year-old female with a history of pancreatic cancer status postpylorus-preserving Whipple procedure presented with a cecal volvulus requiring right hemicolectomy. Postoperative imaging included a CT scan and upper GI series that showed a gastric volvulus with the antrum located above the diaphragm. An upper endos

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gastric volvulus is an abnormal rotation of all or part of the stomach around one of its axes. It is a rare clinical entity and a potentially life-threatening condition. Mesenteroaxial volvulus is a less commonly encountered variant of gastric volvulus. The objective of this study was to describe a rare case of Mesenteroaxial volvulus in a 12-year-old female child.

Acute gastric volvulus is a rare surgical emergency which can lead to severe complications such as gastric ischaemia and perforation. Gastric volvulus is classified by the axis upon which the stomach rotates into organo-axial and mesentero-axial subtypes, with the former more common in adults. We present an uncommon case of recurrent adult mesentero-axial gastric volvulus and describe the associated radiological findings.

A 18 month-old boy with asplenic syndrome was admitted to our hospital with a twelve hours history of mucous vomiting, abdominal pain and a round epigastric mass. It was diagnosed as having a gastric volvulus and an emergency laparotomy was performed. The stomach was situated at the right side and a mesenterioaxial volvulus was found, with cyanosis of the antrum. The gastrophrenic and gastrosplenic ligaments were absent. The clinical and radiological characteristics of asplenic syndrome are reviewed. The pediatric surgeons must be aware of the digestive malformations of the asplenic syndrome,

Volvulus is the torsion of an organ around its pedicle (Garnier et al., 1990). In the dog, the volvulus of the stomach is well known, and the volvulus of the small intestine is rare (Carberry et al., 1989). Volvulus of the whole colon has been described once in a rough collie (Marks, 1986). Only two cases, both in great Danes, of torsion of the caecum and the proximal colon have been mentioned (Carberry et al., 1993). A third case, also in a great Dane, is thereafter described.

Mesenteroaxial volvulus is a form of gastric volvulus that rotates around the short axis of the stomach. Mesenteroaxial volvulus typically presents secondary to an anatomical defect with symptoms that include epigastric pain, retching, dysphagia and early satiety. Our patient presented with episodic abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting for 2 years. Previous imaging was unremarkable but an esophagogastroduodenoscopy done when the patient most recently presented with abdominal pain revealed a mesenteroaxial volvulus. He underwent a laparoscopic gastrostomy-tube gastropexy and has not had any recu

Gastric volvulus is defined as an abnormal rotation of the stomach. Classical textbook presentation may not always be present. Meticulous assessment and broadened differential diagnosis are thus crucial. Various types have been described in literature. Low threshold for detection with aggressive resuscitation and immediate surgical exploration on suspected incarceration or perforation are mandatory. We report a case of 16-years-female who had atypical presentation of mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus. Emergency exploratory laparotomy with wedge resection and primary repair of stomach with antero

Gastric volvulus is a rare entity which lacks evidence in the literature, characterized by the abnormal twisting or rotation of the stomach on itself of at least 180 degrees along its transverse or longitudinal axis. This rotation can lead to the obstruction of the stomach and interfere with its blood supply, causing a variety of symptoms and potentially serious complications. Some patients may be managed temporarily or definitively with conservative or endoscopic treatment, the latest including reduction and percutaneous gastropexy, but most patients benefit from surgery. The authors report t

The diagnosis of gastric volvulus can be a clinical challenge as it is rare, and the symptoms are often nonspecific and intermittent. Upper endoscopy is a minimally invasive intervention that may be repeated more than once to provide key information and ultimately establish such a diagnosis. To emphasize the role of upper endoscopy in surgical cases with recurrent upper gastrointestinal obstructions, we present a case of intermittent gastric volvulus in a patient with a remote history of complex chest wall reconstruction for invasive breast cancer using an omental flap. She presented with subs

Gastric volvulus in conjunction with diaphragmatic hernia is an uncommon but life-threatening presentation that is generally in association with hiatal hernia or diaphragmatic injuries. Diaphragmatic hernia with gastric volvulus can occur many years after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy despite initial diaphragm intactness, and should be suspected in this patient population when they present with upper gastrointestinal obstruction. An acute episode of gastric volvulus can have a mortality of 30% to 50%, hence the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Gastric volvulus is an uncommon clinical entity, first described by Berti in 1866. It is a rotation of all or part of the stomach through more than 180 degrees . This rotation can occur on the longitudinal (organo-axial) or transverse (mesentero-axial) axis. This condition can lead to a closed-loop obstruction or strangulation. Traditional surgical therapy for gastric volvulus is based on an open approach. Here we report the case of a patient with chronic intermittent gastric volvulus who underwent a successful laparoscopic treatment.
