The effect of LongoVital on recurrent aphthous stomatitis in a controlled clinical trial.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of daily intake of LongoVital (LV) (herbal vitamin tablets) in the prevention of RAS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A group of 78 consecutively referred patients was enrolled to a three-months pretreatment period. Fifty subjects were then randomly allocated to an LV-group (n = 25) or a placebo group (N = 25). A double blind, stratified-randomised clinical case-control study was performed during six months. Number and size of the ulcers were registered by the patients using a standardized chart. The degree of discomfort was recorded on a 100 m

Thalidomide: treatment of severe recurrent aphthous stomatitis in patients with AIDS.

An increasing number of AIDS patients have been noted to suffer severe recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), a condition often associated with high morbidity that remains unresponsive to conventional therapeutic interventions. In two cases thalidomide was administered to successfully treat AIDS patients with RAS. Both patients experienced complete abatement of pain shortly after therapy was initiated. Ulcerations that were present for months resolved after three or four weeks of thalidomide therapy without any adverse effects. Thalidomide appears to be an effective agent for the treatment of se

Detection and Analysis of the Oral Flora in Patients with Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis.

The present study detected differences in the oral mucosal flora in healthy people and patients diagnosed with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) using the 16S ribosomal RNA high-throughput sequencing (rRNA-seq). All samples were collected from the lower lip mucosa of 100 healthy individuals and 100 patients with RAS. After the extraction, DNA was subjected to PCR amplification for the bacterial 16S rRNA gene, before subjecting to high-throughput sequencing, and matched to a database. Most bacterial species and most unique bacteria were from the healthy control group, and the amount of operat

Serum levels of vitamin D in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common recurrent ulcerations in the oral mucosa, the etiology of which has not been elucidated; the immune system dysfunction may play an important role in the pathogenesis of RAS. The anti-inflammatory and regulatory role of vitamin D in the functioning of the immune system is well-documented. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the serum levels of vitamin D between patients with RAS and healthy controls. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this case-control study, 43 patients with minor RAS and 43 healthy controls wer

Role of vitamin B12 in treating recurrent aphthous stomatitis: A review.

Vitamin B12, a water-soluble vitamin, plays a vital role in the formation of hematopoietic stem cells and has been associated with oral mucosal diseases, mainly recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). The latter is a debilitating condition, and B12 was proposed as a potential treatment given its role in regenerating oral mucosal tissue. There is conflicting evidence that B12 deficiency causes RAS. Five of the seven randomized controlled trials reviewed used the inactive form of B12 (cyanocobalamin) as intervention, while the other two used the active form (methylcobalamin). Of the latter two, buc

Celiac disease and hematological abnormalities in children with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common diseases of the oral mucosa and may be related to vitamin deficiencies or systemic diseases such as celiac disease (CD). The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of hematinic deficiency and CD in children with RAS. METHODS: The medical records of patients diagnosed with RAS were reviewed for the presence of hematinic deficiencies (hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, ferritin, vitamin B12 , folic acid), and CD. The study group included 108 children with RAS and 57 healthy children who were evaluated for he

Vitamin D and hematinic deficiencies in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) represents a dysfunction in focal inflammatory processes. With the emerging anti-inflammatory roles of vitamin D (VD), we wanted to investigate the association between the onset and severity of RAS and serum VD level. METHODS: Fifty-two RAS cases and sex and age-matched controls were screened for serum iron, B12, folic acid, VD and red cell indices. Variables were compared using independent samples t test and chi square. Binary logistic regression was used to assess the association between the severity of RAS and various hematinic deficiencies.

Is Optimal Management of Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis Possible? A Reality Check.

Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is a condition in which aphthous ulcers repeatedly occur in the oral cavity. It is prevalent in developed countries, occurring in all ages, geographic regions and races and about 80% of people have one episode of oral aphthous ulcers before the age of 30 years. With no laboratory procedures to confirm the diagnosis, treatment is mainly empirical in nature and focuses on short-term symptomatic management. Although numerous treatment modalities have been recommended, only a few are evidence based and can be considered for the optimal management of RAS. Biologi

The effect of bee propolis on recurrent aphthous stomatitis: a pilot study.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common, painful, and ulcerative disorder of the oral cavity of unknown etiology. No cure exists and medications aim to reduce pain associated with ulcers through topical applications or reduce outbreak frequency with systemic medications, many having serious side effects. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the potential of a product to reduce the number of outbreaks of RAS ulcers. Propolis is a bee product used in some cultures as treatment for mouth ulcers. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, patients were assigned

Celiac disease and recurrent aphthous stomatitis: a report and review of the literature.

Celiac disease (CD) is a condition related to the small intestine's intolerance to gluten. The diagnosis of CD can be difficult, especially because patients may exhibit a wide spectrum of signs and symptoms. It is important to identify this disease process early because affected individuals have an increased risk for developing lymphoma of the gut. Our objective was to evaluate whether patients with CD have a significantly higher prevalence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis compared with the general population, as some investigators have speculated. Therefore, we screened 61 patients with diagn

Unani Intervention to Treat Chronic Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The need to investigate safe and innovative clinical therapies is highlighted by the fact that chronic recurrent aphthous ulcers, also known as recurrent aphthous stomatitis, are a very prevalent but poorly understood mucosal condition that significantly affects patients' quality of life with frequent recurrences. Although aphthous ulcers have received a lot of clinical and research attention, treatment is usually symptomatic. Despite a plethora of therapeutic options for oral ulcers in Unani medicine, there is little empirical evidence to support them. In this case report, we desc

Thiol-disulfide parameters in recurrent aphthous stomatitis: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is an idiopathic inflammatory condition of the oral mucosa, affecting approximately one-fifth of the population. Oxidative stress (OS) has recently been suggested to contribute to the etiopathogenesis of RAS. Thiols are potent antioxidants that play vital roles against oxidation. This study aimed to determine how OS contributes to the pathophysiology of RAS by analyzing the thiol/disulfide parameters. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 67 participants (31 patients with clinically diagnosed RAS and 36 healthy, age-

Potential Association Between Vaping and Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis: A Case Series.

Since their invention, e-cigarettes have gained significant popularity. However, they are relatively new, and researchers are still striving to understand the long-term and comprehensive effects of vaping on the body. The impact of vaping on the oral cavity, in particular, remains underexplored. This case series aims to address this gap by examining patients with a history of vaping who presented with aphthous ulcers. In this case series, we describe three adults aged 30 to 45 years who came in with the chief complaint of ulcers on the oral mucosa. All patients were regular or social vapers. N
