Prevalence of swallowing difficulties in older people without neurological disorders: Swallowing profile of older people in the city of Santos, Brazil.

Several studies report that 40% to 60% of older people have some difficulty chewing and/or swallowing, which can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, weight loss, a lack of eating desire, etc. Identify older adults with swallowing difficulties in the city of Santos, Brazil, among users of the public healthcare system. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 individuals aged 60 to 90 years with no neurological disorders. Patient histories were taken, and stomatognathic evaluations were performed. The Mini Mental Health Examination (MMHE) and swallowing-related quality-of-life questionnaire

Case of precise full-mouth occlusal reconstruction guided by digital occlusal function analysis.

The clinical demand for occlusal reconstruction increases rapidly with increasing number of patients who have lost their normal occlusion because of tooth wear and dentition defects. Occlusal reconstruction is a special type of restoration defined as a comprehensive restoration of the function of the stomatognathic system by reestablishing a uniform and stable occlusal relationship between the upper and lower dentitions. Occlusal function analysis is an important part of occlusal reconstruction to achieve accurate restoration design and adjustment. Digital occlusal function analysis was conduc…

Proposal for a myofunctional therapy protocol in case of altered lingual frenulum. A pilot study.

In this article, the authors propose a specific Myofunctional Therapy Protocol for patients with altered lingual frenulum. In such cases tongue muscles are hypofunctioning and their range of motion is reduced. To compensate for this limitation, dysfunctional lingual motor patterns are established, such as the use of some muscles at the expense of others; this negatively affects the development and functions of the stomatognathic system. The Myofunctional Therapy Protocol presented in this pilot study was developed with the aim of making the muscles of the tongue, the floor of the mouth and the…

[Sounds from the TM joint. Etiology and pathological significance].

The irregularities of the disc in relation to the condyle, as the production of pathological sounds, from the temporomandibular joints, is one of the simultaneous and very difficult topics that occupied the physiology of the stomatognathic system, specially the last years. In the paper is examined longly and by the prism of the contemporary research the way of the creation and the manifestation of the various sounds from the temporomandibular joints, as also and the various irregularities of the connection disc. A special emphasis is given to the anterior disc displacement with reduction and t…

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis surgery in a child: case report.

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis is one of the most significant disorders of the stomatognathic system because it causes pain associated with severe functional limitations, such as difficulty in chewing and psychological and clinical problems due to poor oral hygiene. These disorders are quite significant in children, since the treatment is even more complex due to the fact that the condylar region is a site of active growth. The earlier the diagnosis is established, the better the treatment prognosis. Ankylosis can be treated by interposition arthroplasty of the temporalis muscle fascia in c…

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. A review.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a complex disorder characterized by a sleep-related collapse of the upper airway. The most likely candidate for the common pathway linking various abnormalities casually associated with OSAS (such as adenotonsillar hypertrophy, obesity, retro- or micrognathia, acromegaly, or more subtle structural anomalies) is an abnormally small upper airway lumen. Symptoms of OSAS that appear during sleep include snoring, abnormal motor activity, disturbed nocturnal sleep, a sensation of choking, heartburn, nocturia, nocturnal enuresis, and heavy sweating. Daytime

Quantitative assessment of morphological changes of dental pulp components of teeth affected by occlusal trauma.

AIM: In the general economy of the stomatognathic system functionality, the occlusal function has an important role, meaning both the dental-dental reports and the dynamic reports interarch-interarch. Because of the interrelationships and inter-dependency that govern the functioning of the biological systems, a pathological change affecting a component of the stomatognathic system produces impaired functioning of the others. The aim of the present study is to assess the morphological changes occurred in the dental pulp components of teeth affected by occlusal trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fr…

4-year follow-up of treatment with dental appliance or uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: a randomized study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of treatment with a dental appliance or uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) on somnographic variables … oup continued without complementary treatment. The dental appliances had few adverse effects on the stomatognathic system, and the number of adjustments and repairs of the appliances over time was moderate. Pronounced complaints of nasopharyngeal regurgitation of fluid and difficulty with swallowing after UPPP were reported by 8% and 10%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Th …

Implementing gnathological and neuromuscular concepts in patients with chronic migraine.

Temporomandibular disorders are among the potential comorbidities of migraine, and recent reports showed that they may have a role in promoting its progression into chronic migraine (CM). In order to clarify the possible role of neuromuscular components of the stomatognathic system in patients with CM, we studied 18 patients admitted as inpatients at our Headache Unit to undergo a withdrawal protocol for medication overuse, who underwent orthosis, after clinical and instrumental gnathological evaluation. They were subsequently evaluated after 6 months. The values of electromyographic parameter…

Craniomandibular asymmetry in headache patients.

The stomatognathic system was examined in 100 chronic recurrent headache patients, and the asymmetry in clinical and radiographic findings was studied. A clinically recorded facial asymmetry was found more frequently in patients with a definite CMD pain (P less than 0.001), in patients with mainly a unilateral headache (P less than 0.01), and in patients with a head injury in the history (P less than 0.05). The radiographically determined asymmetry in condylar height in these headache patients was high. More condylar asymmetry was found in migraine patients than in patients with tension headac…

Reduced systemic bone mineral density associated with a rare case of tooth and nail syndrome.

This is the first report of a rare genetic tooth and nail syndrome (TNS) diagnosed in a 14-year-old Caucasian girl with a complete absence of the permanent dentition and, additionally, reduced total and lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD). This coincidence suggests a new clinical manifestation of the disorder in which genetic factors and/or shared mechanisms may be responsible for the deterioration of the stomatognathic system, anodontia, nail phenotype and osteopenia. Low bone mass appears to be a new component of the syndrome. There is a rationale for bone densitometry scans assuming tha…

Oromandibular and limb hypogenesis syndrome: treatment report.

The oromandibular and limb hypogenesis syndrome is characterized by aglossia or hypoglossia presenting with limb anomalies. In this case report, we describe congenital hypoglossia associated with glossopalatine ankylosis and middle finger hypomelia, a type III-D malformation in the Hall Classification. The orthodontic and surgical treatment consisted of 3 maxillary expansions, mandibular surgery, and dental alignment. This extensive treatment resulted in acceptable function and esthetic appearance; however, because of lingual hypoglossia, it did not effect perfect occlusion.
