BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive soft-tissue infection associated with high mortality even when recognized early. Empyema necessitans (EN) is an uncommon complication of pleural empyema in which purulent material extends beyond the thoracic cavity into surrounding soft tissues. Although classically linked to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Actinomyces, EN due to Streptococcus anginosus is distinctly rare. Susceptibility to 17 antibiotics was studied in 180 strains of the Streptococcus milleri group (88 Streptococcus anginosus, 63 Streptococcus constellatus, and 29 Streptococcus intermedius) isolated over a 5-year period. Brevundimonas diminuta, a non-fermenting gram-negative bacterium, is emerging as an important multidrug resistant opportunistic pathogen. It has been described in cases of bacteremia, pleuritis, keratitis and peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis. We describe, for the first time, a case of pyogenic liver abscess caused by coinfection of B. diminuta and Streptococcus anginosus, and briefly review pyogenic liver abscesses and the literature regarding B. diminuta.

We described the microbiology of 216 pilonidal abscess episodes among 154 children over a 10-year period at a tertiary pediatric center and assessed patient characteristics associated with recurrence. Anaerobes and Streptococcus anginosus group were the most common organisms isolated from surgical cultures. No risk factors for recurrence were identified.
