Reduction of teat skin mastitis pathogen loads: differences between strains, dips, and contact times.

The purpose of these experiments was to (1) assess differences in mastitis pathogen strain sensitivities to teat disinfectants (teat dips), and (2) determine the optimum time for premilking teat dips to remain in contact with teat skin to reduce pathogen loads on teat skin. Two experiments were conducted using the excised teat model. In experiment 1, the differences in mastitis pathogen strain sensitivities to 4 commercially available dips (dip A: 1% H2O2; dip B: 1% chlorine dioxide; dip C: 1% iodophor; and dip D: 0.5% iodophor) were evaluated. Four strains of 11 common mastitis pathogens (Sta

Novel Bartonella infection in northern and southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni and Enhydra lutris nereis).

Since 2002, vegetative valvular endocarditis (VVE), septicemia and meningoencephalitis have contributed to an Unusual Mortality Event (UME) of northern sea otters in southcentral Alaska. Streptococcal organisms were commonly isolated from vegetative lesions and organs from these sea otters. Bartonella infection has also been associated with bacteremia and VVE in terrestrial mammals, but little is known regarding its pathogenic significance in marine mammals. Our study evaluated whether Streptococcus bovis/equinus (SB/E) and Bartonella infections were associated with UME-related disease charact

Streptococci and aerococci associated with systemic infection in man.

A collection of 820 isolates of streptococci and aerococci from human blood or internal organs was classified by means of a set of cultural and biochemical tests. Of these, 719 (712 streptococci and 7 aerococci) were from patients believed to be suffering from a systemic infection: endocarditis 317; a purulent lesion in an internal organ ("purulent disease") 152; bacteriaemia 250. The endocarditis streptococci included members of all recognisable taxa, but only certain of these were common: Streptococcus sanguis, 16-4%; dextran-positive and usually mannitol-fermenting strains of S. bovis (S. b

Aortic and tricuspid endocarditis due to Streptococcus gallolyticus in an immunocompetent patient with a normal heart.

Endocarditis due to Streptococcus gallolyticus, an agent previously included in the Streptococcus bovis denomination is a serious disease, often associated with lesions of the colon mucosa. Aortic valve is more often affected and tricuspid involvement is quite rare. We present a case of a 56-year-old man who was admitted with a 2-month history of fever. Echocardiogram revealed vegetations on the aortic and tricuspid valve and blood cultures grew S. gallolyticus. Thoracic X-ray and computed tomography were consistent with septic pulmonary embolism. Despite optimal antibiotic therapy he develope

Natural Transformation of Oral Streptococci by Use of Synthetic Pheromones.

The discovery that Streptococcus pneumoniae uses a competence-stimulating peptide (CSP) to induce competence for natural transformation, and that other species of the mitis and the anginosus streptococcal groups use a similar system, has expanded the tools to explore gene function and regulatory pathways in streptococci. Two other classes of pheromones have been discovered since then, comprising the bacteriocin-inducing peptide class found in Streptococcus mutans (also named CSP, although different from the former) and the SigX-inducing peptides (XIP), in the mutans, salivarius, bovis, and pyo

Streptococcus lutetiensis septicemia in a 3-month-old reticulated giraffe calf.

Streptococcus lutetiensis is a gram-positive organism in the non-enterococcal Lancefield group D Streptococcus bovis/S. equinus complex. S. lutetiensis has been reported as a cause of septicemia, endocarditis, and meningitis in humans, mastitis in dairy cows, and systemic streptococcosis in sea otters. A 3-mo-old reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata) with a history of suspected failure of passive transfer (FPT) was submitted for postmortem examination, revealing bacterial septicemia, fibrinosuppurative polyarthritis, and embolic glomerulonephritis, with intravascular gram-positive cocci and

T-cell-mediated immunity in mastitis: pathogen-driven cytokine networks and implications for applied microbiology.

Mastitis is a common inflammatory disease in both humans and dairy animals, most frequently driven by bacterial pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Escherichia coli (E. coli), Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis), and Streptococcus uberis (S. uberis). These microbes deploy distinct virulence strategies yet share the ability to reshape T-cell-mediated immunity, thereby influencing infection outcomes, tissue damage, and chronicity. In this review, we summarize current evidence on how CD4⁺, CD8⁺, γδ T-cells, Tregs, and other T-cell subsets participate in mastitis-associated immune respons

Efficacy and safety of outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy for infective endocarditis: a ten-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The length of treatment of infective endocarditis (IE) with parenteral antibiotics varies from 2 to 6 weeks. Although several studies indicate that outpatient parenteral antibiotic treatment (OPAT) could be safe for uncomplicated viridans-group streptococci (VGS) IE, the experience in Spain is limited and data on other types of endocarditis and OPAT are scarce worldwide. METHODS: Prospective single center study of a cohort including all patients with IE admitted to the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona OPAT program from January 1997 to December 2006. RESULTS: During the study period,

Acute Calculous Cholecystitis Caused by Streptococcus gallolyticus subspecies pasteurianus: A Case Report.

Acute cholecystitis is an infectious disease of the gallbladder caused mainly by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, and Enterococcus species. Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus, previously known as Streptococcus bovis biotype II/2, rarely causes endocarditis, meningitis, and septicemia, mainly in children. Biliary tract infections by Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus are extremely rare. There have been no reports of cases in Japan. Here, we describe the first case in Japan of acute calculous cholecystitis caused by Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus infection. A

Causal role of infectious agents in cancer: An overview.

Cancer is a complex group of diseases with multiple eventual causes. The underlying causes are not fully known. Thus, learning more about the known causes of cancer is an important issue. Moreover, among these factors, infection and its association to cancers is controversial. Although, it seems that the genome instability of the cells can initiate cancer development. The purpose of this review was to present the role of infection in the development of cancer. Infectious agents, such as hepatitis B (HBV) and C viruses (HCV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human papillomavirus (HPV), human immunodef

Overview of Control Programs for Cattle Diseases in Finland.

Animal disease control has a long tradition in Finland. The country is free of all EU-regulated cattle diseases of categories A and B. Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, enzootic bovine leucosis, bovine viral diarrhea, bluetongue, bovine genital campylobacteriosis, and trichomoniasis do not currently exist in the country. The prevalence of paratuberculosis, Mycoplasma bovis, salmonella infection, and Q-fever is low. The geographic location, cold climate, low cattle density, and limited animal imports have contributed to the favorable disease situation. Besides screening for selected regulated

Neurological symptoms and mortality associated with Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus in calves.

Suppurative meningitis-meningoencephalitis (M-ME) is a sporadic disease in neonatal ungulates and only a few studies have reported the involvement of Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC) members in bovine neonatal M-ME. The SBSEC taxonomy was recent revised and previous biotype II/2 was reclassified as S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus (SGP). The aim of this study was to describe a case of fatal neonatal neurological syndrome associated with SGP in calves. Ten calves were monitored because of neurological hyperacute symptoms associate with bilateral hypopyon and death. T

Emerging Presence of Culturable Microorganisms in Clinical Samples of the Genitourinary System: Systematic Review and Experience in Specialized Care of a Regional Hospital.

The detection of emerging pathogens responsible for genitourinary infections has increased with technological advances. We conducted a systematic review of publications on the involvement of these microorganisms in genitourinary samples, and we also investigated their presence and antibiotic susceptibility in samples from patients at our regional hospital (Granada, Spain). The MEDLINE database was searched up to 31 December 2020, and a cross-sectional descriptive study was performed of results obtained in urine samples and genital exudates from January 2016 through December 2019. The review hi

[Endocarditis caused by rare Gram-positive bacteria: investigate for gastrointestinal disorders].

Gemella haemolysans, Streptococcus equinus and Tropheryma whipplei are rare Gram-positive bacteria which may cause endocarditis and are associated with gastrointestinal disorders. We report on three patients with infective endocarditis caused by these microorganisms. G. haemolysans and S. equinus (Streptococcus bovis group) were isolated from blood cultures, and T. whipplei was diagnosed by molecular typing of an excised heart valve. The association between endocarditis caused by these microorganisms and gastrointestinal disorders warranted further examination. Endoscopic examination revealed

Special issues in the management of infective endocarditis caused by gram-positive cocci.

Gram-positive cocci, mainly streptococci and staphylococci, continue to cause the majority of cases of infective endocarditis. Among the streptococci causing IE, the long-standing predominance of oral or viridans-group streptococci has progressively faded, while the number of cases caused by "enteric streptococci" (Streptococcus bovis and enterococci) has increased. While most oral streptococci and S. bovis strains remain fully sensitive to penicillin, nutritionally variant streptococci--now renamed Abiotrophia--and enterococci can exhibit resistance to penicillin and/or glycopeptides that mak

Evaluation of the nanosphere verigene gram-positive blood culture assay with the VersaTREK blood culture system and assessment of possible impact on selected patients.

The Verigene Gram-positive blood culture (BC-GP) assay (Nanosphere, Northbrook, IL) is a molecular method for the rapid identification of Gram-positive organisms and resistance markers directly from blood culture bottles. A total of 148 VersaTREK REDOX 1 40-ml aerobic bottles demonstrating Gram-positive bacteria were tested. Results were compared with those from conventional biochemical and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) identifications. We obtained isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (24), methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcu

Studies on the mechanism of intrinsic resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics in group D streptococci.

Six penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) were detected in clinical isolates of each one of three group D streptococci: Streptococcus bovis, S. faecalis and S. faecium. When examined in whole organisms, the PBPs of S. faecium, the most penicillin-resistant species of group D streptococci, generally had lower affinities for the antibiotic than those of S. faecalis (intermediate penicillin resistance), which in turn were of lower affinity than those of S. bovis (penicillin-sensitive). On the other hand, no quantitative correlation could be established between the binding of penicillin to any one PB
