Disseminated Strongyloides stercoralis infection occurs in immunocompromised patients. Despite the epidemiological overlap of HIV infection and strongyloidiasis observed in certain parts of the world, only six cases of dissemination have been reported in AIDS patients. The clinical presentation has no special features, except for the frequency of other opportunistic infections. The prognosis is poor. This lack of association between disseminated strongyloidiasis and HIV infection had led to the exclusion of extra-intestinal forms of this paraistosis from the revised classification of AIDS.

Chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infections can produce intermittent urticarial skin eruptions and gastrointestinal discomfort for years. Three cases of symptomatic infection acquired by United States military personnel in Vietnam are presented as examples of chronic parasitic disease unrecognized by physicians despite clear histories of geographic exposure, classic creeping skin eruptions, and eosinophilia. More attention needs to be paid to the possible long-term sequela from military service in tropical climates by both military and civilian physicians.

A fatal case of Strongyloidiasis, unsuspected until postmortem microscopy, is presented. At autopsy, the gross changes in the small bowel of the patient suggested pseudomembranous enteritis. The "membrane" consisted of inspissated barium sulphate from a gastrointestinal series 2 wk before death, nematodes, and proteinaceous material. We believe these findings to be unique. Five fatal cases of disseminated strongyloidiasis were identified in Erythrocebus patas caged singly or in groups of two to four in an indoor research facility. This is the first report of fatal hyperinfective strongyloides infection in a species other than great apes and man. Severe pulmonary hemorrhage, duodenitis, and proximal colitis with microscopically demonstrable larvae in affected tissues were the key necropsy findings. E. patas is an available, suitable model for the study of disseminated strongyloidiasis.
