Catatonic stupor: a diagnostically non-specific but distinct syndrome.

Catatonic stupor is a severe and potentially life-threatening syndrome Unfortunately, recognition is often delayed hindering the prompt institution of effective therapy. Diagnostic confusion may also preclude appropriate treatment. Despite extensive evidence than catatonia is a diagnostically non-specific cross-sectional clinical syndrome it is often assumed to indicate schizophrenia and is treated accordingly with neuroleptics whereas it appears that electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) is the treatment of choice. A case illustrating these issues is presented.

Case Report: Catatonic Stupor in Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia.

Catatonia is a psychomotor syndrome common to several medical and neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we report on the case of a 95-year-old w … frontotemporal, parietal, and upper brainstem atrophy. She died from sepsis without recovering from stupor seven years after the onset of symptoms. We believe that the initial behavioral disinhibition was related to the frontotemporal injury, whereas catatonic stupor reflected the progression of the degenerative process to the parietal cortices. Our case …

Differentiating Oneiric Stupor in Agrypnia Excitata From Dreaming Disorders.

Oneiric Stupor (OS) in Agrypnia Excitata represents a peculiar condition characterized by the recurrence of stereotyped gestures such as mimicking daily-life activities associated with the reporting of a dream mentation consisting in a single oneiric scene. It arises in the context of a completely disorganized sleep structure lacking any physiological cyclic organization, thus, going beyond the concept of abnormal dream. However, a proper differential diagnosis of OS, in the complex world of the "disorders of dreaming" can become quite challenging. The aim of this review is to provide useful c…

Steak and Stupor: seizures and E. coli O157 infection.

Neurological complications of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) include altered states of consciousness, seizures, ischaemic stroke and encephalopathy. Adult-onset HUS is uncommon, and there is only a limited literature reporting neurological complications in this population. We report an adult with Shiga toxin-associated HUS complicated by focal-onset non-convulsive status epilepticus, who made a full neurological recovery.

Electroencephalographic sleep patterns in post-anoxic stupor and coma.

We analyzed EEGs performed over a 6-month period on patients with impaired consciousness following acute hypoxia or anoxia. There were 17 EEGs performed on 14 patients. Nine of the 17 records contained spindle activity. Spindles were present in 6/8 EEGs in stuporous patients, in 3/9 EEGs in comatose patients, in 6/10 patients who eventually died, and in 3/3 patients who regained consciousness. When spindle activity or background reactivity were absent, outcome was poor, ie, death or a persistent vegetative state. The presence of EEG spindle activity after hypoxic or anoxic injury did not indic…
