Correction of linear system drifts in magnetic particle imaging.

Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a tracer-based imaging technique that can be used for imaging vessels and organ perfusion with high temporal resolution. Background signals are a major source for image artifacts and in turn restrict the sensitivity of the method in practice. While static background signals can be removed from the measured signal by taking a dedicated background scan and performing subtraction, this simple procedure is not applicable in case of non-stationary background signals that occur in practice due to e.g. temperature drifts in the electromagnetic coils of the MPI scann

Preoperative parathyroid localization using joint planar imaging.

The conventional approach for preoperative parathyroid localization with the dual 99mTc-sestamibi (99mTc-MIBI) and 99mTc-pertechnetate (99mTcO4- ) scintigraphy technique obtains the differential image by subtracting images from the two scans; the former depicts both the thyroid and parathyroid glands while the latter depicts the thyroid only. In this study, we developed a novel method based on Poisson noise modeling and maximum-likelihood estimation to generate the differential image in an iterative fashion using both planar images jointly. We demonstrated improved performance of our joint met

Registration and difference analysis of corresponding mammogram images.

An automated technique is proposed for identifying differences between corresponding mammogram images. The technique recovers an approximate deformation between a pair of mammograms based on identifying corresponding features across the two images. The registration process is completed using an unwarping technique for transforming one image into the coordinate system of the other. A difference image is generated using intensity-weighted subtraction in order to identify regions of large difference. Evaluation of the technique is performed using 124 bilateral image pairs which contain a total of

Rehabilitation technique facilitates association cortices in hemiparetic patients: functional MRI study.

We used fMRI to study brain activation with facilitative rehabilitation techniques (passive hand movements and visual feedback) in two patients with subcortical lesions. Two tasks were given in a sequence. The first task (trial 1) was repetitive hand grasping by the paretic hand at a rate of 0.5 Hz with the eyes closed. The second task (trial 2), the facilitative rehabilitation technique, included task 1 plus support by a trainer to move the paretic hand with the eyes open to get visual feedback of the movement. The data were analyzed by a subtractive method. When task 1 was subtracted from ta

[Magnetic resonance angiography of the head and neck area].

Magnetic resonance angiography is a noninvasive method in vascular imaging using non-contrast-enhanced and contrast-enhanced techniques. The contrast media used in contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography are different from the X-ray contrast media and do not affect the thyroid gland or renal function. In detecting hyper-vascularized lesions in the head and neck, contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography is the method of choice, which provides an acceptable quality in comparison to digital subtraction angiography. Future developments in magnetic resonance imaging techniques will

[Bilateral dacryocystography using digital subtraction technic for kinetic evaluation of the lacrimal passage].

For dacryocystography we used the following procedure: after bilateral intubation of either the inferior or superior canaliculi with two galactography tubes connected with an Y-adapter, aqueous contrast medium (Ultravist 370) was injected. The lacrimal pathways were then imaged with the digital subtraction technique (Siemens Polytron), as well as with conventional film. In cases of postsaccal stenosis, the relative delay of contrast medium passage--compared with the normal side--could be specified. A diverticulum of the canaliculus and a transitional cell carcinoma of the lacrimal sac could be…

[Dacryocystography in the digital subtraction technic].

Dacryocystorhinostomy is well established as a common surgical approach to the treatment of obstructive epiphora. The importance of a radiological procedure for pre-operative diagnosis and postoperative follow-up is emphasised. Routine imaging (dacryocystography) of the nasolacrimal system is made difficult by the high contrast between bone and air in the sinuses and pharynx, by overlapping structures, and by the very small size of those structures that are of interest. Digital subtraction technique provides significantly improved visualisation even of poorly contrasted structures of the lacri…

Development of a computer-aided diagnostic scheme for detection of interval changes in successive whole-body bone scans.

Bone scintigraphy is the most frequent examination among various diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures. It is a well-established imaging modality for the diagnosis of osseous metastasis and for monitoring osseous tumor response to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Although the sensitivity of bone scan examinations for detection of bone abnormalities has been considered to be relatively high, it is time consuming to identify multiple lesions such as bone metastases of prostate and breast cancers. In addition, it is very difficult to detect subtle interval changes between two successive abnor

Diagnosis and Treatment of Intracranial Aneurysms with 320-Detector Row Volumetric Computed Tomography Angiography.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to determine the clinical utility of 320-detector row volume-computed tomographic angiography (VCTA) in the management of intracranial aneurysms. METHODS: Between February 2011 and May 2015, 550 patients successfully underwent 320-detector row VCTA for suspected intracranial aneurysms. Three-dimensional (3D) digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was used as the ultimate reference standard, and the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of both nonsubtracted and subtracted VCTA in identifying aneurysms were analyzed. RESULTS: Nonsubtracted VCTA ident

Treatment of a symptomatic trapezial dysplasia with metacarpal instability following thumb metacarpal lengthening with an addition-subtraction osteotomy.

The most important problem of trapezial dysplasia with thumb metacarpal instability is of bony origin. Together with the progressive capsuloligamentous decompensation it evolves in a progressive adduction deformity of the thumb metacarpal secondary to the dysplasia of the trapezium with its increased articular slope. The addition-subtraction osteotomy restores the anatomy combining two techniques: an abduction-extension osteotomy of the first metacarpal to correct the axis of the first metacarpal and an opening wedge osteotomy of the trapezium to reorientate the trapezial saddle. We present a

Value of [11C]-Methionine PET/CT in Preoperative Localization of Parathyroid Adenomas.

There are multiple imaging modalities in primary hyperparathyroidism. Ultrasound examination and subtraction scintigraphy are usually the first-line imaging techniques. When these results are negative or inconsistent, additional [11C]-methionine PET/CT (MET-PET/CT) or 4-dimensional computed tomography can be performed. This study aims to evaluate MET-PET/CT in comparison with other imaging techniques in primary hyperparathyroidism. This is a retrospective cohort study. Eighty-four patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, who underwent parathyroid surgery, were included. Imaging results hav

Intravenous digital subtraction angiography of the thoracic and abdominal aorta.

Intravenous digital subtraction angiography (IV DSA) is a new imaging modality that utilizes techniques of video image acquisition and computer image manipulation to provide anatomic information about blood vessels and organs. In many ways, it represents an electronic version of classic intravenous and film-subtraction angiography. As a means of imaging the thoracic and abdominal aorta, IV DSA has demonstrated great potential, particularly in vessels originally imaged by the former techniques. We have imaged the aorta in over 300 cases at Brigham and Women's Hospital, either alone, or in combi

Short T2 contrast with three-dimensional ultrashort echo time imaging.

There is increasing interest in imaging short T2 species which show little or no signal with conventional magnetic resonance (MR) pulse sequences. In this paper, we describe the use of three-dimensional ultrashort echo time (3D UTE) sequences with TEs down to 8 μs for imaging of these species. Image contrast was generated with acquisitions using dual echo 3D UTE with echo subtraction, dual echo 3D UTE with rescaled subtraction, long T2 saturation 3D UTE, long T2 saturation dual echo 3D UTE with echo subtraction, single adiabatic inversion recovery 3D UTE, single adiabatic inversion recovery du

Power Doppler ultrasound examination of the intracerebral and extracerebral vasculature.

Power Doppler is a new ultrasound technique based on the visualization of the Doppler power spectrum. In 22 patients with different lesions of brain-supplying vessels the results of power Doppler ultrasound were compared with those of digital subtraction angiography and conventional color Doppler ultrasound. In patients with intracranial high-degree stenoses, power Doppler was largely free of those artifacts that occur with conventional color Doppler (e.g., echoshadowing and aliasing). The vessel lumen was seen in all patients with more than 80% stenoses. Power Doppler was superior to conventi

Perfusion imaging techniques in lower extremity peripheral arterial disease.

Lower limb peripheral arterial disease (PAD) characterizes the impairment of blood flow to extremities caused by arterial stenoses or occlusions. Evaluation of PAD is based on clinical examination, calculation of ankle-brachial index and imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT, MRI and digital subtraction angiography. These modalities provide significant information about location, extension and severity of macrovasular lesions in lower extremity arterial system. However, they can be also used to evaluate limb perfusion, using appropriate techniques and protocols. This information may be valuab
