INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of indomethacin and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), well-known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents, to heal eye burns induced with hydrofluoric acid in rabbits.
METHODS: After general anesthesia, the right eye of 72 male New Zealand rabbits were burned by instillation of 2% hydrofluoric acid for 60s. OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of treatment failure of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) "cocktail" for patients with interstitial cystitis (IC).
METHODS: Fifty-one IC patients received weekly intravesical instillations of "cocktail" composed of 50% DMSO (50 mL), 100 mg of hydrocortisone (5 mL), 10,000 U of heparin sulfate (10 mL), and 0.5% bupivacaine (10 mL) for 12 weeks. A chiral stationary phase (CSP) was prepared by coating amylose-tris(3,5-dimethylphenyl carbamate) (ADMPC) onto aminopropylated spherical silica gel. We present a method for the enantioselective analysis of albendazole sulfoxide (ABZSO) in plasma for application in clinical pharmacokinetic studies. ABZSO enantiomers were separated on a 5-micron Chiralcel OB-H column (4.6 x 150 mm) using hexane:ethanol (93:7, v/v) as the mobile phase and fluorescence detection. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of itraconazole-dimethyl sulfoxide ointment for treatment of keratomycosis in horses in the northeastern United States.
DESIGN: Prospective clinical trial.
ANIMALS: 9 horses (10 affected eyes).
PROCEDURE: All horses treated for keratomycosis at Cornell University between July 1994 and July 1996 were included in the study. The diagnosis of keratomycosis was confirmed by cytologic examination, and all horses were treated with 0.25 ml of a 1% itraconazole-30% dimethyl sulfoxide petrolatum-based ointment, applied to the affected eye every 4 hours.

Using a blind method for assessing the results, a study was made of the effect of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) on fibrin formation and microcirculation in 42 patients with rheumatic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic scleroderma, Raynaud's syndrome). It has been shown that the therapeutic effect of DMSO in rheumatic diseases is determined to a definite degree by its normalizing action on fibrin formation and microcirculation.

Two methods for the determination of methionine in proteins have been used to estimate the extent of methionine sulfoxide obtained upon exposure of proteins to oxidizing agents. A girl with secondary amyloidosis as a complication of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis was administered dimethyl sulfoxide by topical application to the skin. Her gastrointestinal symptoms and massive proteinuria improved. Decreased left ventricular function and creatinine clearance also improved remarkably. The favorable effect of dimethyl sulfoxide in this single patient deserves further study in a controlled trial.
