Benzosultines as sulfur dioxide (SO2) donors.

In order to understand precise biological roles of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)), reliable SO(2) donors, compounds that produce SO(2) under physiological conditions, are necessary. The design and development of 1-phenyl-benzosultine as an efficient SO(2) donor is reported. This compound undergoes cycloreversion to generate SO(2) upon dissolution in aqueous buffer at 37 °C with a yield of 89% and a half-life of 39 min and shows SO(2)-like biological activity in a DNA cleavage assay.

Drug targets in mycobacterial sulfur metabolism.

The identification of new antibacterial targets is urgently needed to address multidrug resistant and latent tuberculosis infection. Sulfur metabolic pathways are essential for survival and the expression of virulence in many pathogenic bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In addition, microbial sulfur metabolic pathways are largely absent in humans and therefore, represent unique targets for therapeutic intervention. In this review, we summarize our current understanding of the enzymes associated with the production of sulfated and reduced sulfur-containing metabolites in Mycobacte…

New organic chemistry of sulfur dioxide.

Simple 1,3-dienes undergo highly stereoselective hetero-Diels-Alder additions with SO2 at low temperature giving sultines. These reactions that are faster than the more exothermic cheletropic additions of SO2-producing sulfolenes. This has led to the invention of a new C-C bond-forming reaction combining electron-rich dienes and alkenes with SO2. The reaction cascade has been exploited to develop combinatorial, one-pot, four-component syntheses of polyfunctional sulfones, sulfonamides, and sulfonic esters. It also allows us to generate, in one-pot operations, enantiomerically enriched polyprop

Sulfur: its clinical and toxicologic aspects.

Although there is no known dietary requirement for inorganic sulfur, it is an essential element for all animal species in as much as they all require the sulfur-containing amino acid methionine. There are three predominate forms of organic sulfur in animals and humans: 1). the thiomethyl of methionine residues in protein; 2). the sulfhydryl disulfides of protein; and 3). the compounds containing ester or amide bound sulfates of glycosaminoglycans, steroids, and many xenobiotic metabolites. Thus, sulfur becomes an important constituent of amino acids, proteins, enzymes, vitamins and other biomo…

Poly(Glycerol-Sulfur) as a Functional Sustainable Nanomaterial: Synthesized by Anionic Ring Opening Polymerization of Elemental Sulfur.

Elemental sulfur is an abundant by-product of the petroleum industry, yet its controlled incorporation into functional polymer architectures remains challenging. Here, we report a one-pot, moderate-temperature (120°C) anionic copolymerization of elemental sulfur (S8) with glycidol to produce hyperbranched poly(glycerol-sulfur)s with tunable molecular weights (5-30 kDa) and sulfur contents (3-11 wt%) on the gram scale. The reaction proceeds under markedly milder conditions than conventional sulfur polymerizations, enabling precise control over polymer structure and programmable, redox-triggered…

Oxygen Bridge-Induced Spin-State Engineering Enables Solvation-Barrier-Free Sulfur Redox Kinetics in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are attractive for next-generation energy storage, yet practical deployment is impeded by the lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttle effect and sluggish sulfur redox kinetics, which are further aggravated by solvent shielding that blocks LiPSs from accessing catalytic sites. Here, we develop a yolk-shell MoO3/Co3O4@C nanoreactor that leverages oxygen bridge-induced orbital oscillation to break the solvation barrier and accelerate interfacial conversion. We identify that the dynamic vibration of Mo-O-Co oxygen bridges facilitates a directional electron flow via a 4…

Sulfur-Sulfur Bond-Driven Synthesis of 3-Thiooxindoles Using Triflic Acid without a Metal or Hydride Source.

A triflic acid-catalyzed, metal-free protocol has been developed for the synthesis of 3-thiooxindoles from readily available isatin and thiophenol derivatives under mild conditions, thereby avoiding the use of fluorinated solvents, silanes, and additives. The method exhibits a broad substrate scope with moderate to good yields. In addition, the strategy enables thioether formation from ketones via 3,3-bis(aryl/alkylthio) indolinone, highlighting mechanistic versatility in an acidic medium. Experimental evidence from intermediate and mechanistic investigations substantiates the reaction pathway

Reversible sulfur dioxide capture by amino acids containing a single amino group at low sulfur dioxide concentrations.

SO2, an air pollutant, is harmful to human health and causes air pollution; therefore, numerous studies have focused on the development of SO2 control technologies. Although limestone- and ammonia-based absorbents have been widely used in wet desulfurization, they are difficult to regenerate and do not enable the recycling of SO2, which is a useful resource. Recently, amino acids have attracted attention as reversible SO2 absorbents because they are eco-friendly and have excellent reactivity with SO2, as well as high regeneration performance. Glycine, L-alanine, β-alanine, 4-aminobutyric acid,…

Induced sulfur metabolism by sulfur dioxide maintains postharvest quality of 'Thompson Seedless' grape through increasing sulfite content.

BACKGROUND: The commercial preservation of table grapes largely depends on the application of sulfur dioxide (SO2 ). However, little is known about whether SO2 participates in sulfur metabolism to improve the postharvest quality of table grapes. In this study, the contents of sulfur-containing compounds, activities of enzymes, and expression of genes involved in sulfur metabolism in table grapes (Vitis vinifera cv. Thompson Seedless) were evaluated. RESULTS: The results indicated that SO2 treatment maintained the postharvest quality of table grapes. The sulfite content in rachises and berries…

Exploration of Sulfur Assimilation of Aspergillus fumigatus Reveals Biosynthesis of Sulfur-Containing Amino Acids as a Virulence Determinant.

Fungal infections are of major relevance due to the increased numbers of immunocompromised patients, frequently delayed diagnosis, and limited therapeutics. To date, the growth and nutritional requirements of fungi during infection, which are relevant for invasion of the host, are poorly understood. This is particularly true for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, as so far, sources of (macro)elements that are exploited during infection have been identified to only a limited extent. Here, we have investigated sulfur (S) utilization by the human-pathogenic mold Aspergillus fumigatus during invasi…

Simultaneous activation/sulfurization method for production of sulfurized activated carbons: characterization and Hg(II) adsorption capacity.

As an inexpensive method for modification of activated carbons (ACs), sulfurization has attracted significant attention. However, the resulting sulfurized activated carbons (SACs) often are less porous than the original ACs. In this work, we propose a new method for concurrent sulfurization/activation that can lead to preparation of SACs with more porosity than the corresponding non-sulfurized ACs. By using scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, and iodine number experiments, the porous structure of the SACs has been compared with that of non-sulfurized ACs. The specific…

Sugar yields from dilute sulfuric acid and sulfur dioxide pretreatments and subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis of switchgrass.

Dacotah switchgrass was pretreated with sulfuric acid concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 wt.% at 140, 160, and 180 °C and with 1 and 3 wt.% sulfur dioxide at 180 °C over a range of times. Sulfur dioxide loadings of 0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 10%wt.% of dry biomass were also tested at 180 °C for 10 min. Sugar yields were tracked for pretreatment and subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis to identify conditions for the highest total sugar yields. Pretreatment with 1 wt.% dilute sulfuric acid at 140 °C for 40 min followed by enzymatic hydrolysis with 48.6 mg enzyme/g initial glucan in raw biomass resulted in …

Development of a thoracic personal sampler system for co-sampling of sulfuric acid mist and sulfur dioxide gas.

A novel personal sampler was designed to measure inorganic acid mists and gases for determining human exposure levels to these acids in workplaces. This sampler consists of (1) a parallel impactor for classifying aerosol by size following the ISO/CEN/ACGIH defined human thoracic fraction, (2) a cellulose filter to collect the residual acid mist but allowing penetration of sulfur dioxide gas, and (3) an accordion-shaped porous membrane denuder (aPMD) for adsorbing the penetrating sulfur dioxide gas. Acid-resistant PTFE was chosen as the housing material to minimize sampling interference. To tes…

Effects of impregnation of softwood with sulfuric acid and sulfur dioxide on chemical and physical characteristics, enzymatic digestibility, and fermentability.

Hydrothermal pretreatment improves bioconversion of lignocellulose, but the effects of different acid catalysts are poorly understood. The effects of sulfuric acid (SA) and sulfur dioxide (SD) in continuous steam pretreatment of wood of Norway spruce were compared in the temperature range 195°C-215°C. The inhibitory effects of the pretreatment liquid on cellulolytic enzymes and Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast were higher for SD- than for SA-pretreated material, and the inhibitory effects increased with increasing pretreatment temperature. However, the susceptibility to cellulolytic enzymes of w…

Oxidative damage of sulfur dioxide on various organs of mice: sulfur dioxide is a systemic oxidative damage agent.

Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD), Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH) play an important role in attenuating free radical-induced oxidative damage. The purpose of this research was to determine (1) whether sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) increases levels of lipid peroxidation and alters intracellular redox status in multiple organs of mice, and (2) whether SO(2) is a systemic toxic agent. The effect of SO(2) on levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and GSH and activities of SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT were investigated in nine organs (brain, l…

Effect of pH on sulfite oxidation by Thiobacillus thiooxidans cells with sulfurous acid or sulfur dioxide as a possible substrate.

The oxidation of sulfite by Thiobacillus thiooxidans was studied at various pH values with changing concentrations of potassium sulfite. The optimal pH for sulfite oxidation by cells was a function of sulfite concentrations, rising with increasing substrate concentrations, while that by the cell extracts was unaffected. The sulfite oxidation by cells was inhibited at high sulfite concentrations, particularly at low pH values. The results from kinetic studies show that the fully protonated form of sulfite, sulfurous acid or sulfur dioxide, is the form which penetrates the cells for the oxidatio…
